Book Review - Angel Star

Author: Jennifer Murgia
Published by: Lands Atlantic Publishing, May 18th, 2010
4 stars- I enjoyed it and recommend picking it up

Synopsis (from Lands Atlantic Publishing):
Seventeen-year-old Teagan McNeel falls for captivating Garreth Adams, her guardian angel come to earth. But where there is light, dark follows, and now she is torn between one angel’s sacrifice and another angel’s vicious ambition that threatens not only her life, but the lives of everyone she knows.

When I opened the book, I thought for sure this would be a predictable story about the usual Fallen Angel Temptation Trope. But, oh no, not at all. It was so very far from anything that can be labeled "predictable".

Jennifer takes her high-school protagonist, Teagan, a bullied girl with only one friend and gives her a story so filled with challenges and rich lore that I actually read the book in one day. I couldn't stop. I wanted to know if Teagan could rise to the challenge. If the incredible new boy in school, Garreth, would help her through these problems which were so much bigger than her avoidance of riding the school bus in order to bypass even more bullying. And most of all, if the newly found strength awoken in Teagan would last through a physical and psychological battle which was ancient in its origin.

I'm trying to keep the review spoiler-free. There are many surprises some that you see coming but many more that you don't. I liked the introduction of Hadrian as the antagonist. He was well written and believable especially at the very end. For those who have read it, let me just say the scene with the rosary and note was a nice twist that I didn't see coming.

And I loved the ending. I really shouldn't say any more for fear of spoiling it all. There is a sequel, Lemniscate, and I'm thrilled because I'd like to delve into Jennifer's mythology some more but as a standalone book, Angel Star, hits the Pick It Up and Enjoy It mark and hits it perfectly.

  6. Katie - YOU will love it.
Jennifer - Thank YOU for a wonderful, wonderful mythology and believable characters. It's hard for this busy mom-of-3 to sit down and read a book in a day. It takes a special story. Let's just say, the kids had pizza for dinner!! LOL. Yes, your story was THAT good that I couldn't stop reading it -- not for very long.

Elizabeth and Cynthial11 - I'm looking forward to your reviews.

aprilnichole - Great!!! It is v v hard to write it spoiler-free because you naturally want to point out how Jennifer handled the "this" and the "that" and the "ohmygoshnoway" part -- LOL!
