Book Review-Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles

So normally we don't double up on our book reviews, but sometimes we just have to. Carla had posted her awesome review of Perfect Chemistry here:
/label/Perfect%20Chemistry

I went back and forth about reading this book numerous times. I even picked it up a few times at the book store, only to put it back. I'll be honest, I totally went against my own words and judged it by the cover. After hearing how great it was from Carla, our friends at Page Turners and few other friends I decided to add it to my To Read Pile. I ended up winning a copy of it from Page Turners when they had their Holiday Blowout Contest.

Here's the books summary:
A modern tale of star-crossed lovers with a fresh urban twist. At Fairfield High School, on the outskirts of Chicago , everyone knows that south-siders mixing with north-siders can be explosive. So when Brittany Ellis and Alejandro “Alex” Fuentes are forced to be lab partners in chemistry class, this human experiment leads to unexpected revelations – that Brittany ’s flawless reputation is a cover for her troubled home life, that Alex’s bad-boy persona hides his desire to break free from gang ties, and that when they’re together, life somehow makes more sense. Breaking through the stereotypes and expectations that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart, Perfect Chemistry takes readers to both sides of the tracks in a passionate love story about looking beneath the surface.

I picked up the book thinking I'd start it and then finish it a different day, but what I didn't except was to devour the book in one sitting. I was totally blown away at the story, the writing and the characters. Simone cleverly crafted a modern day spin on West Side Story meets Romeo and Juliet.

Brittany Ellis and Alejandra "Alex" Fuentes are from two different sides of the tracks. Brittany has it all, perfect body, designer clothes, a new car, the hot football star boyfriend, and she's captain of the pom pom squad. Alex, living is the poorer and rough part of town, with his mom and two younger brothers is part of a Mexican gang. He's got a bad rap, a hot body and no one dares to mess with him. What both Brittany and Alex are hiding to the outside world is they're both not at all what they seem to be. Both of them have a lot more in common than they realize and with the help from one another the walls they built up and their reputations they've worked so hard to build up will start to come crumbling down. They both find neither of them is how they set themselves out for others to see them as.

Let's just say the attraction between the two of them is heated and WOW! Amazing. What the two of them don't even fathom when they're partnered up in Chemistry is falling in love. I totally love that Simone wrote the book from both POVs. She did such an amazing job, that you fall in love with both of the characters and you find yourself pulling for both of them. You get to see what they both deal with in their own lives separately and together.

Simone did her homework and did a wonderful job at really showing what it's like living in both Brittney's and Alex's lives, as both race and social structure are what drove the story. This isn't a book you'll read and find it hard to believe any of this could happen. This easily could be someone's own love story.

I found myself to engrossed in the story that when it was done, I wanted more. She did a fabulous job with the whole book. I felt the pace in which she wrote it for was well done. She wrote a modern day, "real" life love story. Please note that it is a YA and there is some language in the book and it does have reverences to sex.
