Restoring Harmony Blog Tour, Day 2- Interview & Giveaway

Today we are thrilled to have Joelle Anthony on our blog today, the author Restoring Harmony.

Which character surprised you with how they turned out and why?
Probably Randall. He’s much more multi-faceted now than he was when I began writing the story. I know a lot about him that maybe shows through, but probably is just stuff the author knows. It’s kind of fun that way…to know more about your characters than everyone else.

What is one of Molly McClure's character traits you most admire? Why?
Her music. I so want to be musical, but I’m really not. I’m not just saying it either, because I’ve tried. Luckily, my husband is a professional musician, so I am blessed with a lot of music in my life.

What message are you hoping readers take away from Restoring Harmony?
Never give up. But, really, isn’t that the theme of every book? I have been getting emails from readers saying they’re inspired to learn to cook, practice their instruments, and grow a garden. That’s pretty cool!

What or who inspired you to become a writer?
Well, it’s hard to pinpoint one person because wanting to be a professional writer is something that came and went from the time I was very young until I actually started pursuing it in my twenties. My mum always had lots of books around me. And Betsy, my favourite character, is a writer. And my fifth grade teacher got me writing a lot. Plus there are the fabulous storytellers out there who write books that just make you want to write, like Nevil Shute and John Rowe Townsend. So many things throughout my life conspired to make me become an author.

What is one thing you have to have when you write?
Quiet. I really just need silence, or close to it. I can’t imagine writing in a cafĂ© or an airport.

If you could write a favorite fictional character of yours into your story, who would you write and why?
I would have to figure out some crazy way to write Betsy from the Betsy-Tacy books by Maud Hart Lovelace into one of my books. In truth, I already try to name drop the books and characters whenever I can. For example, in Restoring Harmony, the fiddle is called Jewels. In the Betsy books, her mother is called Jules. I actually wrote it that way originally, but my early readers were confused because I refer to the fiddle as “her” and Jules is a man’s name. By then though, I couldn’t think of it as anything but Jules, so I changed the spelling.

Jace and Clary Kiss by ~amdonandsakura16 on deviantART

"It's just a kiss," he said, and though his tone was harsh, his hands were inexplicably gentle. She let him turn her, looked up at him. His eyes were very dark, perhaps because it was so dim down here in the Court, perhaps because of something else. She could see her reflection in each of his dilated pupils, a tiny image of herself inside his eyes. He said, "You can close your eyes on think of England, if you'd like."

You can read more about their kiss on page 173 of City of Ashes.
