I do not remember being bitten. I wish I did, for then I would know the creature who did this to me and I would have a purpose, to track him down and repay him for the poisoned gift he gave me. Back in the Thirteenth Century, Will was destined to be Earl of Mercia, although he never lived to inherit his title. In the centuries that follow, Will has led a lonely life, learning to deal with whatever the present day throws at him, always searching for answers but never finding any. Until this time, when he awakens after a 20-year-slumber, hungry for the blood that sustains his undeath, when it appears that he is finally getting a glimpse at why he exists. He does indeed have a destiny, and an enemy, but revealing that fate will be a matter of trust...

A fascinating, unique paranormal read, K.J. Wignall puts a whole new spin on vampire lore. I really enjoyed reading this book! I found it to be engaging and mysterious, as the story centers on a sixteen year old Will. Really he's an eight hundred year old vampire trapped in a sixteen year old body, who every so many years arises from his crypt to find the world has once again changed and he's no closer to the answers he is searching for. Bitten, changed and buried alive with no answers or clues as to who did this to him or why, Will has lead a lonely life of solitude since the 12th century.

Will is definitely a character I enjoyed getting to know. He's lived hundreds of years looking for answers, living by himself and sadly each time he wakes up the world has changed again. It wasn't hard for me to feel bad for him and I understood why he was such a sad character. He's also a character who surprised me. Unlike the traditional vampire, Will actually cares for humans, despite the fact that he feeds on them every so often and even when he does, it's the ones who are lonely or are forgotten by society that he feeds upon.

When Will awakes after twenty years he's desperate to feed and ends up meeting Jez, who right before he dies tells Will some things about himself, like what Will's full name and he tells him about a girl he will meet and how they'll each need each other. I liked the unique way Will's back story, his meeting Eloise and his search for answers were written in the story. Will's flashback's through out the story also provide a glimpse of his past life, as well as some small clues into the mystery of his maker, and the darker forces that are creeping into the city. Eloise is a fascinating character. I still think there's a bit more to her tie to Will than is revealed in Blood. She's a rather open minded, accepting person, which is good considering the life she's just been thrown into is a bit terrifying.

This is a well written, engaging vampire story I had a hard time putting down. I was totally drawn into the mystery that surrounds Will's change, the connection/tie he has with Eloise and his history. Everything from the world building, to the history and lore is enticing and had me wanting more. This is a well paced story that vampire and paranormal fans will enjoy. It's an exciting, quick read with an ending that will leave wishing the sequel was already in your hands.

  2. Victoria- You're welcome! It is a refreshingly different. It's nice to read something that breaks the mold, and this is one of those vampire books that does that.
