Clockwork Angel Read Along Day 3: Chapter 2 Hell is Cold

Welcome! It's day 3 of our Clockwork Angel Read Along! Please be sure to visit our link here for our schedule, guidelines and to fill out the form to be entered to win some fabulous prizes.

Today's discussion is about the chapter 2. Will and Tessa meet, and Will confirms our suspicions that the dead girl he and Jem found in the beginning of the story ties back to the Dark Sisters. We also see that the Dark Sisters have been up to some rather disturbing things, via the room Tessa and Will enter.

* I absolutely loved Will's introduction into the story! His sarcasm during this chapter is fabulous. My first thought was "I can see where Jace gets his sarcasm from". What was your impression of Will?

* We learn via the Dark Sisters that the Magister is the reason why Tessa exists. What are your thoughts now on the Magister and what do you think Tessa is? Do you think she's more than human? She doesn't seem to know anything about the downworlder world, but she does have a unique ability.

* Do you think we've seen the last of the Dark Sisters? Do you think they'll play a bigger role as the series progresses?

50 comments:

  1. Will is certainly driven by pride. By comparing himself to brave Sir Galahad ("My strength is as the strength of ten, because my heart is pure--" haha) and boasting of his "investigative skills . . . without interruption", you just know he loves being a Shadowhunter.

My speculation about Tessa's origins are kind of similar to what we found out about Valentine and Jonathan in the Mortal Instruments series. Maybe her blood is mixed with some demon blood. Maybe that's what is meant by "without the Magister, you wouldn't exist". Tessa would, but not with the abilities she has now. That's just a guess.

I was hoping that Tessa would've made it away from the Dark Sisters in chapter one, but we can never trust Cassie to be so kind haha The end of chapter two is a little vague, with her getting hit by Mrs. Dark's spell, hex, or whatever that was, but I think when she wakes up in chapter 3, Will would have disposed of Mrs. Dark and Tessa will wake up at the Institute a little confused as to what went on that night. Also, a little wounded.

    Time to meet more Shadowhunters!!

  2. * I loved Will right from the beginning. His sarcasm and arrogance are entertaining and charming. I loved how even in such a bad situation, he was funny and full of himself.

*The question on what Tessa is...I am still confused at this and I am hoping we find out in Clockwork Prince. She is obviously much more than she seems.

*I can't really answer the last question well, since I have read the book a few times. I don't remember what exactly I thought the first time I read it, but I knew that we hadn't heard the last about the dark sisters.

  3. Will is great, I can already see that I am going to love him as a character.

Tessa biting one of her rescuers? Perfection. I think this really gives some hints to her character, I think she's probably going to be "difficult", which should be fun!

I still am not sure what to think of the Magister, although I absolutely agree about Tessa's thoughts on the matter -- how can he be up to any good if he is OK with the Dark Sisters kidnapping her, holding her prisoner, and then selling her to him? I'm sure we will learn more about the Magister later. As for the Dark Sisters, we'll probably see more of them too... I guess they are some kind of demons or other evil Downworlders, right?

  4. Hmm... I don't think we've seen the last of the Dark Sisters yet. I think they might come back in the next books.... Maybe they know something about the Magister which helps the Shadowhunters defeat him in the end? That's just my speculation though. :)

And yup, Will reminded me of Jace... but different, in a good way. :D

  5. I loved Will’s sarcasm and humor. :) I think the Magister is someone evil and Tessa is some kind of a downworlder... and oh no, the Dark sisters will probably have their revenge...

    aahh.

  6. I love Will. I love the similarities between him and Jace. Will's sarcasm is one of my favorite aspects of this chapter. I especially love the line where he tells Tessa that the person rescuing you from a horrible fate is never wrong.

At this point the Magister is still very mysterious but obviously significant. Even after reading the entire book, I'm still not sure what Tessa is but I'm hoping for more of an explanation in Clockwork Prince.

The first time I read Clockwork Angel, I didn't think that this would be the last of Mrs. Dark. I thought she would try to get revenge for her sister's beheading.

  7. Question One: Impression of Will
Oh Will....how I love a guy who KNOWS he is the whole package: good looks, mad fighting skills, witty, charming, arrogant.

Question Two: What is Magister, Tessa, etc.
I think that the Magister is a downworlder like the Dark Sisters. He is powerful but I still don't know what exactly he will be. Clare does a great job bringing in beings that were out of my realm of imagination until she writes them! I do think Tessa is a downworlder too at this point.

    Question Three: Dark Sisters Return?
The Dark Sisters will have their day. They will seek retribution on everyone who has taken the Magisters bride away.

  8. Will....oh how I love a snarky, sarcastic bad boy...

Tessa & the Magister..Tessa has no knowledge of the downworlders but I feel she will play an important role in their world...can't quite figure out WHAT she is yet...the Magister is a enigma at this point...who is he?? what does he need Tessa for??

Darke sisters...glad to see the end of the one sister but am sure the remaining sister will seek revenge and try and retrieve Tessa for the Magister

  9. Hmm, my first impression of Will was that he's very humorous even when there's danger lurking around the corner. Gotta love a guy that's sarcastic!

I don't know what Tessa could be, I think she's definitely more than human.

My thoughts on the Magister are clouded, we don't know enough about him, just that he wants to marry Tessa.

I don't think we've seen the last of the Dark Sisters. Well I hope not, their presence in the book is intriguing.

(Btw, totally loving this read along, it's actually my first time participating in one.)

  10. I love how Will and Tessa first meet. As I read I can just feel the curiousity they were developing for each other. I felt that Will and Tessa's conversations are going to be fun to read.

And about Tessa and the Magister. I assumed the Magister was a downworlder and since it was said that Tessa was born because of the Magister, I figured one of Tessa's parents had to be a downworlder and he made that happened.

And I definately felt that this is not the last we will see of the Dark Sisters.

    ReplyDelete
  11. My first impression of Will was one of interest; rescuing Tessa from such a dangerous situation immediately placed Will's character in the limelight -- he was clearly going to be an important character. BY Tessa's detailed description of his striking appearance, I thought this hinted that he may also be a potential love interest. Will's character was definitely interesting, in more ways than the enigmatic aura he exudes; he is the first shadowhunter Tessa meets. She introduced to everything magical and the shadowhunters, and Will in particular, are her salvation, really, since they save her from the Dark Sisters.
As Tessa can 'change' into different physical forms, it's obvious from the first that she has a unique gift. In Cassie's fandom, it seems pretty official that Tessa woudl be termed as a Downworlder. However, it is difficult to conjecture exactly what she is, because Cassie has said that her gift cannot be identified or allocated into any of the existing classifications of 'Downworlder' -- Tessa has, in a way, created her own grouping. This makes me feel sorry for Tessa; I think as she learns more about the extraordinary nature of her power, the more she feel increasingly isolated; Tessa really is completely on her own.
I highly doubt that we have seen the last of Dark Sisters -- Cassie herself said that you never leave a villain alive unless you are going to resurrect them later on. However, I do not think they will have as much of a central role,I think they will act more as conduits to the Magister. I think that we will see more dealings directly with the Magister because he is so closely involved with Tessa.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I loved Will! It was so funny how Tessa was so confused by him and thought he was a crazy. I think this especially works well since the story is set in historical London. I don't think the scene would have played out quite the same if it was a current day story.

I loveeeeee this read-a-long, but it is super hard to stop after one chapter!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Like most of the readers, I loved how Will and Tessa met, I loved that little bit of action and interaction between them and that tension as she didn't know who he was. I love his sarcasm and big ego and thank goodness Tessa keeps him on his ground by correction him every time she has a chance to.
About the Dark Sisters, I think we will see more of them, they seem to be a strong ally to the Magister and I think he needs them too as they have a solid knowleage on Tessa's powers.

    ReplyDelete
  14. My impression of Will in this chapter is that he is a good shadowhunter. You do see where Jace gets his sense of humor, even in the face of danger. My favorite line in this chapter is: "She's lying." "Oh, do you really think so?"

I think the Magister is someone who is very powerful but twisted and evil. I think Tessa is definitely more than human but she is not part demon. I believe she is part angel.

No, I think the DS's will be back, at least the one who survived. We will see her again.

    ReplyDelete
  15. * I love love love Will in that chapter. I mean, he's sarcastic and absolutely *gorgeous* taking care of Tessa in that situation even if it's the first time they met. I saw Will as a unic character, I know he's sarcastic and lots of people think that he's a copy of Jace, but I see them both as completely different people.

    * I was absolutely surprised when the Dark Sister said that the Magister is the reason that Tessa exists, this prove that something really big is going on.

    * And yes, one dark sister dead and one angry? Of course she'll have a big role on the books, she'll be back for revenge.

    ReplyDelete
  16. *Oh Will, how I love what you bring to the story. That part about the handsome young man rescuing you from a hideous face never being wrong? Perfection!

*Hmmm, so the magister is the reason Tessa exists? What in the what? Is he her real father (a la Darth Vader voice)? Did he do some sort of crazy experiment on her parents? Slip something in her drink? Are the Dark sisters just heaps of crazy? I don't know!!!!!

*These Dark sisters are e-v-i-l! They will not go away that easily!

    ReplyDelete
  17. This is one of my favorite Will chapters too. It shows his personality in a big way. The chapter title is perfect too. I'm sure Tessa had never been exposed to anyone quite like him before. Of course, there is only one Will. :)
Since the Dark Sisters are obviously all about themselves, revenge would be an obvious thing for them to want to seek. Also, Tessa is very valuable to them so I would be guessing that the Magister won't be happy if Tessa disappears.
As before, it's hard to gauge my reaction to the statement about the Magister being responsible for Tessa's existence because this isn't my first read of CA. Tessa doesn't know what she is or evidently why she is. The Magister obviously holds the key to all the mystery behind what she's learned since she arrived in London.
    Now, on to Chapter 3.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh, Will. I've loved him since the beginning. Witty, sarcastic, arrogant boys get me every time! If I were ever kidnapped by evil sisters, I'd want him to rescue me. His humor in the face of danger would def distract me from having a complete meltdown lol

As for what Tessa is.. I have NO clue whatsoever. I really hope we find out in Clockwork Prince.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Will, oh Will! After falling in love with Jace, how can we not love Will? I am very weak for handsome guys what a good sense of humor aka Herondales ;) He really is one of those charming (in his own way at least :P) heroes Tessa usually read about :D

I suspect that Tessa is somewhat like Jace, Clary and Jonathan/Sebastian, but that's just a guess since I've never heard of any downworlder with her abilities and if she is a downworlder her parents ent to great lengths to hide it. Tessa anyhow seems to be some kind of experiment..

Well, I don't think Mrs. Dark is gonne forget that Will killed her sister that easely so I think she's gonna come up with some kind of revenge (a little annoying that I don't remember if she does, haha) :P

    ReplyDelete
  20. I REALLY want to know what they meant by 'the Magister created her'! I mean, her parents are her parents, not the Magister... Maybe it's like MI? Where they used blood from another creature?

I think the Dark Sisters will definitely have a part in the series, though probably not a big part.

    ReplyDelete
  21. These are great comments!! I've really enjoyed reading through each of them. I know it's hard for those who have already read the book to not mention any spoilers, thank you for keeping it spoiler free. It's been a challenge for me to keep it spoiler free as well. It's been fun re-reading the book with all of you and discussing it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh Will...how to put this..well, his satire humor was immediately shown through the first thing he even said to Tessa. That whole scene still cracks me up. I really enjoy reading about Will, but there's a few things holding me back from loving him.
The whole magister/Tessa thing still puzzles me, but in a good way of course, ha. There's no telling who or what Tessa truly is till later, I suppose.
I hope we keep seeing them! They're very eerie characters that give you chills reading about them. While they're not, er, my favorite characters personality-wise, I think they could definitely contribute to the story.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I absolutely love Will. His sarcasm & humor make him so compelling. Tessa is fascinated by him right away, and it is easy to see why.

I think Tessa is definitely more than human, but I'm not sure what she is yet. Whatever the magisters purpose is for her, it is not good.

This can't be the last time we see the Dark Sisters. It seems like they have a lot invested in this plan.

  24. Ithink when will is introduced he is very sexy and arrogent as well. My first thoight here was, wow! Another Jace, yay! And with a sexy english accent :-)

i think tessa may be a shapeshifter, kinda like warewolves but instead of becoming a wolf she becomes other people.

We will for sure see more of the dark sisters and the magister, by the looks of things they are a very major part of this story

    ReplyDelete
  25. My impression of Will at that point was that he was so much like Jace in sarcasm and snarky attitude that it was sorta scary. I mean, if that is passed on through genetics than we have our answer for Jace's attitude. :P Anywho, Will seems like a slight (okay more than slight) jerk from there.

Thoughts on the Magister: He is sick and twisted to do that to anyone.
Thought on what Tessa is: I am not really sure... as of this point it's a complete mystery.
Is Tessa more than human: I highly doubt it since she seems so... normal (other than that little identity problem, hehe... not funny). I mean, there is the chance that she is more than human because of what she can do.

It's probably likely that we haven't seen the last of the dark sisters but because of Tessa passing out we don't know if the one is dead or not. Maybe they'll play a role in the future of the book but I'm not really sure. Due to their power it seems quite likely.

  27. Hahahahahaahahaha! Oh Will Herondale, you have to love him! I don't think anyone else simply cursing would make me smile so much! From the get go his witty sarcasm had me in stitches and I just fell in love with him all over again! That chapter is one of my absolute favourites, I love how Will quotes Sir Galahad, he's so funny. Tessa's reaction to him is so perfect, I think we'd all be stunned to silence if a beautiful boy burst into our room and started shaking his had at you. My goodness I feel on a love high after reading that again, I think that must have been when I turned Team Will. Right from the start!
    ----------------------------------------------

Though I want to answer the other questions it's hard because I have already read before and I don't want to answer in any way that might give it away to the other readers. So I think I'll just leave it at that for today. So tempting to read on but I want to wait and read it with all you lovely people! Seriously, can't stop smiling.
    "But my books—"
"I'll get you more books!" LOL <3

  28. I don't think this is the last we will see of the Dark Sisters in this series. They obviously really want to give her to the Magister. I think they will try for a long time to force her to marry him.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can see that Jace definitely takes after Will, but I feel that Will is a lot more arrogant than Jace usually is, even though he shows he knows how to be nice to girls. Even with one of the Dark Sisters dead, I think they're still going to be a bother to Tessa and the Shadowhunters, as well as the Magister.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gosh, I loved Will since page one! I loved how sarcastic he was, and I figured his character would just get better and better!

I think we have not seen the last of The Dark Sisters. I think the magister and them will still play a big part in the story

I'm thinking the Dark Sisters will be back later for sure.

  34. Well as someone who read the ID first i say that my first impression of will is hes a really togh sarcastic guy but someone who believes in greater good. And well what i thought about the Magister stuff i was juss creeped out that some guy would juss want to marry a girl who he didnt know, like i know this is in the 1800s but im pretty shure they didnt have a arranged marrages. Did they? Anyways as for the downworlder part of Tessas new life i thought it was pretty cool that she had a power that no one else had, but i also felt bad for her cause she was learning alot of new things she didnt knoww. And well the Dark Sisters i didnt want to think about them i was just relieved they were gone but i knew they were gonna come back and bite us.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think I've answered this question before so i'm going to say it again.
My first impression of Will is that he's just like Jace but is much quirky.
Just to add I think he's the Jace with a crack lol the sarcasm is just there we all know where did Jace get it from.

I think the magister is a downworlder who created Tessa for some reason. Out of an experiment. I think Tessa has the gift and can be considered as a Downworlder, I think she's more than human for the fact that she was brought up with a family. She still cares for Nate thats why she doesn't try to escape.

I think this is not the last of the dark sisters, I think they have a bigger role for the entire book and the series.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love Will. He's dark and sarcastic.

    ReplyDelete
  37. oho, will. he does remind me of jace, and i love how he quotes sir galahad! you can tell that will takes pride in his rescuing the damsal in distress, and of course his description of his appearance (as in looks) makes it even sexier ;) and yes, will is definitely going to be a love interest of tessa's, no doubt about it. he's too handsome for tessa to believe xD and i suspect jem may be part of a love triangle! because love triangles always add something to the plot.

when i read that the magister created tessa, i was quite intrigued. this obviously means that her gift is no accident, and she is being trained for a very specific reason - which we don't know yet. haha, but really, this magister fellow must be someone with plans within plans, and that tessa did not wind up in the dark sisters house by accident. of course she is more than human, showing characteristics similar to a warlock, but i didn't think that warlocks would be able to change their whole appearance like tessa. (and like the way she changes is quite interesting, with it rippling up her body and stuff)

as for the dark sisters.. well they weren't killed properly, so i assume they'll be back. since they were training tessa, they can't be human, so they have powers of a sort. probably some magic, so they wouldn't die that easily.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Will is so sarcastic and seems so full of himself that he's probably hiding insecurities.

The way Mrs Dark says "You might even say he's the one who caused her to be born" sounds line he wasn't directly involved. Poor Tessa is a confused and innocent bystander. She's not completely human, but no less than Shadowhunters.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hate the magister. We barely no anything about him and he is already ticking me off. On the bright side we see more of Will. I love his character. His sarcasm is amazing :)And i definitely think we will be seeing more of the dark sisters

    ReplyDelete
  40. I adore Will! M quote in the whole book is in this chapter ans was said by Will. Not having my book in front of me (loaned it to a friend)I cant quote it exactly, but Will mentions the sky is purple and made of hedgehogs and I couldn't help but think "this is Jace. It is so Jace. Hot, snarky, attitude. Will is so Jace."
As for the Magister, I disliked the character but can't wait to see what impact he has on the rest of the series. And the Dark Sisters, they are deffinatly not gone. I dont think they would have had so much significance just to disapear.

    ReplyDelete
  41. My first impression of Will was that he's so funny. I was literally Laughing Out Loud everytime he said something. Especially when Tessa hit him with the pitcher and he was watching his blood saying he was going to die. Totally genius.

I do not like the Magister and we haven't even truly met him. Seems like a coward that he is nowhere around but I'm sure he will pop out sooner or later. As for Tessa I love her gift of shifting into other people. She is obviously not full human bit as for what she is I'm going to say half witch/shifter.

I guarantee this is just the start of the Dark Sisters. We meet them so early so they will be back in probably a big way. They are highly ranked with the Magister so wherever he is I'm sure the sisters won't be far behind so yes they will be huge in the series.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love Will...he's so sarcastic and snarky...he reminds me so much of Jace. He's also very mysterious...I can't wait to find out the reason why he is the way he is.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I know Tessa is more than human, I just have no idea what.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Will's introductory description includes cursing and an array of weapons. It shows you that he is going to be a man of action.

Since the Magister is the reason Tessa exists and wants her power, I wonder why he didn't train her himself instead of letting the Dark Sisters get to her first.

    ReplyDelete
  45. First impression of Will: YUM! I love me some sarcastic bad boys, and he fills that role quite well.

I didn't notice the first time I read this chapter, but now I saw the part where the Dark Sister says that the Magister is the reason that Tessa was born. (They explain that later in the book,) I found this very interesting that this piece of foreshadowing occurred so early in the book. As for Tessa's humanity, she's believed up until arriving at the Dark Sister's home that she was human her entire life. I believe that there's something different about her, but not necessarily evil or of demon influence. You can plainly see in TMI series what demon blood or even influence will do to a human being, even a Shadowhunter, and clearly this is not the case with our Tessa.

I already know that the Dark Sister's role in this story hasn't ended yet, but it's certainly curious to see how they've changed in this scene, from seemingly evil humans to evil other creatures that we don't yet know what they are. It's very interesting, the combination of possibilities of what they *could* be at this point...

  46. Sorry I'm late, again, I'm doing my best to catch up on all the posts today, and to discuss
    without spoiling things.

    - Haha, my impression of him was alike yours. I loved his sarcasm and wittiness. I found myself laughing out loud in this chapter because of him. I really like how his humor brings a balance to the story, and to his character as well because of his heavy emotional baggage (but we'll talk about that further on), I mean how he's investigating a crime and then saving Tessa but he still has time to joke around.

And I know he's a Shadowhunter, so protecting the "mundanes" and keeping things in order is his job,but I just thought it was odd how invested he was in finding the girl, just as how he had a strong reaction when they found her body and Jem said her age... maybe there's something else there too ? Or I'm just thinking too much...

    - The Magister sounds creepy. And that part about him being the reason of her existence really called my attention, I want to know why and HOW. I think she's definitely more than human because of her ability, she seems like a Downworlder, but of what kind ?

    - I don't think we have seen the last of them. And maybe they'll play a bigger role since they are working with/for the Magister, so let's see.

    ReplyDelete
  47. @Jeffrey West
You have a good theory there! I didn't think of that. But I do think that the Magister must
have been experimenting for Tessa to be born. But why wasn't she born with him there ?
Why did he have to "fetch" her from the USA ? AHHHH.

    @AlternaKat
I think you are right on what you said about Tessa. I like how when Will when to rescue her she didn't throw herself at him, and she didn't trust him right away, she was skeptical and asked questions, and then bit Henry hahaha. I like her.

    @Josie
I wish we could like comments here on blogspot, *likes what you said of Will and Tessa*

    @Dominique
I like what you said, and you made question if there are more people like Tessa or with her ability n the Shadowhunter world ? (After her I mean, I don't recall anyone like her in TMI...)

  48. * I thought Will’s humor was wonderfully refreshing – it was amusing to see him and Tessa interact.

    * After that line, I think she’s definitely more than human. I’m curious how the Magister had a hand in making her that way, though…

    * No way. They were way too creepy and evil to be done in the story so quickly.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I"m sure we will meet with the sisters again, because they had such a big role in kidnapping introducing Tessa to this magic world. But I hope they'll get out of the picture soon because I don't like them :P
And well, Will has sarcasm, which sometimes made me smile and laugh, but sometimes it's just too much for me and I feel like I don't really like him. But for me, Jace is a totally different person and him, I absolutely like :D

  50. I don't think Tessa is a witch,I think there is something more, she is gifted for something different, something that will really help the Shadowhunters, even to herself.
