Hey everyone!

Becca Fitzpatrick here. Today I'm guest blogging at MundieMoms and dishing a little on author book tours. Consider this a behind-the-scenes look into what we authors do to get ready to meet YOU!

First up, packing. Packing is a big deal! This year, I'll be gone 29 consecutive days, and I have a strict policy that I only travel with carry-on luggage. In other words, I have to fit all this:

Into this:

When packing, I keep three things in mind. Pack light, pack mix-and-match pieces, and try really, really hard to limit myself to one pair of comfortable shoes. Oh, and when I say pack light, I mean pack lightweight clothing. Six tissue tees take up the same amount of room as one sweater.

Next up: school presentations! Most people know authors do public signings at bookstores in the evening, but what do we do all day? Sit around and eat room service? Haha...no. We're usually out and about at local high schools talking to students about the writing process and our books. I like to provide exclusive behind-the-scenes content in my school presentations, things like outtakes from the cover photo shoots, share rejection letters I received for Hush, Hush, and every now and then I'll tell an embarrassing story from my own high school years.

Finally, social media. When I'm on the road, the best way to reach my readers and fans is through social media. I like to post pictures to Facebook and Twitter, as well as give updates as often as possible. Not only does it build awareness and excitement for the tour, but it also gives readers who don't live in the cities I'm visiting a chance to see what I'm up to.

And there you have it. A sneak peek into the world of book tours. If I visit your city, I hope you'll come see me!

Becca

Banned Books Week Wrap Up

Banned Books Week Celebration came to end yesterday, and what an awesome week it was! I had totally planned on getting a post up, but when I got home from the Austin Teen Book Festival I was totally wiped out. It was a lot of fun, and it was great talking to other book lovers there about banned books.

I'm ending our week long celebration with a link to the Huffingon Post's "The 11 Most Surprising Banned Books"
  1. The Bible
  2. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
  3. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig
  4. Beloved and The Bluest Blue by Toni Morrison
  5. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin & Eric Carle
  6. James & the Giant Peach and The Witches by Roald Dahl
  7. Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
  8. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  9. A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway
  10. A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein
  11. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle

The list of banned books will never cease to amaze or surprise me. I'll never understand why other people feel they have the right (which they don't) to tell others what they can and can't or should and shouldn't read. Ignorance isn't bliss and even though the week long celebration is over, we can continue to celebrate the FREEDOM TO READ by taking a stance and supporting our right to read. Pick up your favorite banned book and enjoy READING it!

THE BBW GIVEAWAY: THANK YOU to everyone who left your comments and shared with us what your favorite banned books are. The WINNER of a brand new copy of The Giver is.... Virginia! Congratulations!!! *an email has been sent to our winner*
