Book Review: My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent

Flashback Friday is a meme I started last year here on the blog for the sole purpose of spotlighting books that have been sitting on my shelf to read for awhile. This will include titles released the previous year and ones that have been out for a few years. Today's feature is for a book that's been on list to read for awhile: My Soul To Take by Rachel Vincent

By: Rachel Vincent
Published by: Harlequin Teen
Released on: August 1st, 2009
Source: book from publisher
4 stars: I Really Enjoyed It
Purchase from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Series: Book 1 in the Soul Screamers Series

She doesn't see dead people. She senses when someone near her is about to die. And when that happens, a force beyond her control compels her to scream bloody murder. Literally.

Kaylee just wants to enjoy having caught the attention of the hottest guy in school. But a normal date is hard to come by when Nash seems to know more about her need to scream than she does. And when classmates start dropping dead for no apparent reason, only Kaylee knows who'll be next. -quoted from Goodreads

I can't believe I've waited this long to read this series! Rachel Vincent's My Soul To Take is a fun, fast paced, enticing story loaded with romance, a rich mythology and some fabulous character chemistry. I loved the unique paranormal spin on bean sidhe also known as banshees or soul screamers, and as morbid as this may sound her own lore behind her grim reapers. I liked they there weren't these freaky creatures, but characters/people I could in some way relate to and I enjoyed reading about. This mix or lore and paranormal characters was fabulous.

Kaylee for me was a great character. I love that she's described as beautiful, but she's someone who doesn't see it. She's a strong willed, totally grounded character who's trying to make do with all she's recently learned about herself. I loved the romance in this book! Nash is one of those all American, guy next door high school athletes who could get away with anything. The thing I adore about him is he's real. He doesn't put himself out there, but he always doesn't give away all his secrets either, which makes me want to know more about him. Kaylee and Nash have awesome chemistry together. *fans self* I loved their sweet moments together, and I also liked that there was a reason behind the instant connection they both had.

Rachel Vincent's characters are all well developed and written in a way that made it easy for me to love them. The grim reaper Tod was the perfect addition to this story line. He provided sarcasm and humor at all the right moments, and the twist between him and Nash totally surprised me. You can tell that behind all their bantering and long history together that they do care about each other. *spoiler free* Kaylee's Uncle Brendon and her Dad Aiden were two other characters I liked getting to know. They both want the best for Kaylee and I could tell their concerns and love for her were real.

This was a fabulous read for me and I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. If you enjoy a fun, entertaining paranormal book with some great twists and swoon worthy romance than I highly recommend picking this book up.
