City of Fallen Angels Read -A- Long: Day 2

Welcome to Day 2 of the City of Fallen Angels Read-A-Long. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the COLS giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 2: FALLING
  • I really like this chapter. Not only do we get to see some great moments between Jace and Clary, but a few of the other Shadowhunters are mentioned as well. I liked that we find out Magnus and Alec were off traveling together, we see how overly protecting Jocelyn is with Clary, and we read a bit more about Simon & Izzy. Back to Jace and Clary, leave it up to Izzy to walk in, in the middle of another fabulous Jace and Clary moment. She interrupted their alley way scene and now the training room scene. Do you think she does this on purpose? I'm not saying that in a bad way. I think she just doesn't care.
  • I LOVE YOU's were said!!!! I'm sure I'm not the only that freaked out over that and had a huge grin on my face. Do you think Jace and Clary will finally catch a break and be able to enjoy spending time together?
  • If you'd rather not answer those questions, what are your over all thoughts about this chapter?

Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

  1. I don't think that Izzy does this on purpose (but it is annoying! XD )
Wow. I waited so long for this "I love you". but it didn't felt so... real? I can't explain it. it just felt a little bit... wrong for me. maybe it was better to hear this "I love you" later in the book.
And I don't think that Jace and Clary will finally catch a break and be able to enjoy spending time together. Cassie just wont allow it XD

  2. *It is maddening when Izzy is always interrupting such good moments with them. I don't think she does it on purpose, but I also don't think she really minds that she interrupts them either.
*Okay so I totally died that I love you's were said, but I was so sad about how Jace was acting. I knew he really meant it, but I wished it was more touching. Not being the first reading I think differently of it, but still sadly.
*I really liked this chapter. I love that Alec and Magnus are traveling on a romantic getaway!! *awww* I also like getting a quick debriefing on what is going on. How Jocelyn is feeling, the wedding coming up, how Clary and Jace have been bonding now that they can actually be together since they aren't brother and sister. I think that a lot was brought to the surface in this chapter. I am really enjoying re-reading since it has been a while!! It's like the first time every time with these books!!

  3. I agree- I loved how we got some great Jace/Clary moments along with bits about the other characters. And when Clary falls into Jace's arms...*swoon!*

As for Isabelle, I don't think she does it on purpose. She's probably bored at the Institute without Alex around, so she's probably wandering around a lot.

As for the I love yous, I didn't realize until now that that was really the first time they said it to each other, at least in a way that wasn't like "I love you but I can't have you." I agree with some of the other commentators...It didn't seem that romantic to me because Jace was being so broody.

  4. I didn't even pay attention tot he fact that this was the real first time they had said I love you to each other. Just the was Jace said it makes me not want it to count. Obviously something is wrong, and even though you can't MAKE Jace tell you something he doesn't want to, Clary should try a little bit more to get him to talk to her. It's very frustrating.

Since Magnus and Alec are my favorite story line tied with Jace and Clary, I love that they are sending back stupid goofy photos of themselves to Jace. I have read and listened to all the audio book a lot so I know whats coming, but it's nice to see what other readers catch and I miss.

I also laughed because Clary can't even seem to do a simple flip without screaming in fear. It's a good thing she doesn't embarrass in front of Jace in training at least.

  5. I loved the beginning of the chapter. I've always been a huge fan of the friendship between Simon and Clary, and I think that telephone call was a testament to how strong their bond is. Just the fact that he feels the need to call her, even if he can't tell her about Camille, make me smile.

I agree with everyone that Isabelle doesn't really mean to act like she acts. She may seem tough, but I kind of look at her as a softie inside.

I think everyone covered the Jace/Clary "I love you" pretty well. :)

  6. It's so hard to answer these questions as a re-read and not give anything away.... I don't want to take the chance of spoiling anything for first time readers. ;) It's not stopping me from re-reading though. I love visiting these chapters again. I always seem to pick up something new or that I missed the first time around.
Izzy's timing is just perfect... she definitely has a knack for interruptions. I love the fact that Magnus and Alec are away together and they are my favorites too.
And then there's Jace and Clary... *sigh*

  7. I think Isabelle is still trying to protect both of their feelings from being hurt. I'm not sure why, maybe she's gotten used to it after three books of doing so.

I doubt it's all going to be happy from here on. Cassandra Clare isn't going to let them off so easy. :P

  8. Well, my oppinion on question 1 is kinda hard without spoilers. So short and simple. Yes she's doing it on purpose and yes she has reasons. (kinda refering to something she says to a certain someone else in chapter 12. pg. 239 if you are wondering. close to the bottom.) Anyway, read the above mentioned part and you will likely understand what I mean.
As for the three little words. I had to reread those sections a few times. I honestly missed it the first time. So I think it was a long time comming but Jace and Clary catching a break? Not gonna happen. Happy endings can't happen with 2 more books.
Now, my favorite part of this chapter was neither of these parts. I liked Clary's little speech about Simon being killed if he ruins the wedding (love that Luke is finally getting what he deserves! the poor guy needs a break.) and I also enjoy Clary's smart comments. Made me laugh.

  9. I'm stroken by the intensity of the Jace and CLary's scene, maybe also a little bit disappointed because of Izzy's interruption and absolutely scared because I feel like it probably won't go on like this!

  10. I love this chapter, too. I do not think that Isabelle is as self-possessed as she seems, and I do not think that she means to interrupt Clary and Jace's romantic moments. I think she was hurt that Simon had contacted Clary (she seemed surprised) and not her after his little adventure.

I do not think that Cassie will let Jace and Clary get too much alone time ;P

One thing that bothered me about this chapter is that we learn Clary quit high school to train as a Shadowhunter. Now I know the training is a very important part of her education so that she can protect herself and others, *but* as a mom, I worry about her continuing her traditional education as well.

I also think that it would be fun to jump from rafters and play with bungee cords, too :D

  11. I read this chapter and wondered if Jace will ever stop being tortured by his relationship with Valentine. I also wonder if Isabelle is jealous of Clary, she seems upset that Simon called Clary first instead of her like Isabelle asked him too maybe Isabelle has deeper feelings for Simon then she would like to believe.

  12. Well Izzy doesn't do it on purpose, hopefully, plus they were "training" right? Haha well there's always someone interrupting them two, it gets a bit annoying-___-. Jace and Clary together doesn't feel right for me cause they're siblings right?__? Or no?_? This chapter was okay, what I really liked was the conversation between Clary and Simon through the phone. I also liked when Clary is looking at the pics of Magnus and Alec together, is so cute!!!

I did beat Time today haha, I had to read late last night.

Hope everyone has a nice day=)

    1. I agree, they're in a public place! How could she possibly *know* when they're having a romantic moment? I don't think there's a rune for that...

    2. Mundanes: "There's an app for that."
Shadowhunters: "There's a rune for that."
      hahaha

  13. I love the references to Magnus and Alec. If anyone hasn't read the funny extra Cassandra Clare wrote in the form of postcards between the two of them, Izzy, Jace, Clary, and even Simon, you definitely should. So funny! I think you can find it on her old blog, and possibly her website.

This chapter was one of the reasons I was so glad she decided to extend the trilogy into a longer series. Although I do love a happy ending, I also know that no character can go through an entire story, change and transform and develop, and then go back to a happy normal life at the end of the book. There's no way these characters (Jace especially) could come out of City of Glass without some major changes. The Lightwoods lost Max, Alec comes out and suddenly has a boyfriend, Simon not only became a vampire but also got the Mark of Cain, Clary found out some crazy stuff about her family and herself, and Jace... the demon blood junk, Valentine, and the fact that he DIED. All of them need a huge transition period, a time to figure stuff out, like getting used to a brand new house. Seeing in this chapter Jace being vulnerable, being upset and unsure, was cool for me. I love how Cassandra Clare explores his complicated feelings for Valentine and how he feels about himself, basically how he is dealing with all of this.

Also, I love the running joke about the name of Simon's band. :)

    2. I totally agree with everything you said!

The sarcasm in this book is fabulous! For some reason it's even better when listening to the audiobook.

  14. Izzy is often self-absorbed but I don't think she is doing these things on purpose.

I wish Clary and Jace would catch a break, get alittle alone time but things never seem to go their way.I loved the I LOVE YOU...can never hear that enough.

  15. Finnaly we get some jace and clary action! I dont think Izzy does it on purpose though.from my point if view Jocelyn is just being a mother and try to keep clary safe. I was so happy to hear that Alec and Magnus are spending some time together and found love. Now im just waiting on Simon to make up his mind about who he wants to date, and i also want Izzy to find that love she deserves. Jace and Clary are very... complicated and jocelyn makes it even harder on their relationship but i knkw they can pull through whatever is thrown at them.

  16. I love Simon's band's every changing name. I also love seeing more of a best friend dynamic between Simon and Clary. "I was born amazing" ah-Jace.

  17. I melted into a puddle of goo mixed with heartache with the I love you's. That's was breath taking and painful. Izzy just doesn't really think that she would be interrupting anything, mostly I feel she is a little too self centered. I love the Magnus and Alec vacation moments. Everybody needs a little more love, especially Jace and Clary. They need their time, please let it finally happen!

  18. I was so glad to see Clary and Jace get a moment together I just wish they would last longer but they never seem to get a break.

  19. Always glad when Jace & Clary get together! Izzy's timing was perfect for tension building. Don't want to lapse into a romantic novel to early in the book.

  20. I loved the Jace and Clary moment, especially after everything they went through before. It was carefree in a sense. And Izzy. Oh Izzy. I think that most of the time she's just in her own world and the thought that she might interrupt anyone else just doesn't occur to her.

There's always hope for me that Jace and Clary will finally be able to just be together. It's taken four books for them to finally get to this place, especially with the "I love you's", one can only hope.

  21. I adored this chapter. The training scene was perfect Jace. Since a lot of the rest of the book things are "different" with Jace, I treasure that one scene. And the elevator?!?! Hot tamales that was warm - and Jace saying the L word first was perfect. He was so guy about it too. Love my boy Jace!

  23. Sweet Clary/Jace moments make me so happy! I really love the relationship between both of them.

  24. I think Izzy is doing it because she is a little jealous but not because she is interesting in Jace just because is her brother and she miss spending time with him. And I think we are going to have to wait for Jace and Clary to spend more time together, Clary has to be train to became a shadowhounter.

  25. As much as I love Izzy, I do think she interrupts Jace and Clary on purpose. Even though Izzy is tough, especially when it comes to boys and who she "dates", I think deep down she wants the kind of love that Jace and Clary share. And since she hasn't found it/says she doesn't want it, she is probably going to be interrupting Jace and Clary whenever she can.
I love that Jace and Clary finally got to voice the I Love Yous to each other. Even though we all knew they did because of everything they have done for each other, but still saying them out loud to one another is huge. But I say no these two will not catch a break. They are Shadowhunters first and there is always something that needs to be done. As much as Jace and Clary need a vacation and just be together, I don't see that happening.

  26. I thought this chapter did a really good job of showing the two sides of their relationship. There is the deep love they have for each other but there is also a lot of things hanging over them; Jace's return from the dead and Clary's knowledge of a brother she never knew about. I almost felt like this chapter was foreshadowing of some of the conflict to come.....or maybe I just *know* that Cassie Clare would never let her characters find happiness so easily :)

  27. I think Izzy gets a kick out of interrupting Clary and Jace intimate moments. And I hope Clary and Jace get a break and can finally b together but if that happens I suspect it wont happen til the last book :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. I honestly don't think that Izzy purposely interrupts Clary and Jace's PDA's - I think it's just a case of "bad timing" on her part. Izzy is a huge Clarry/Jace supporter and she very much cares about their happiness.
Unfortunately, and as much as I hate to say this, I doubt that Clary and Jace are anywhere near being a happy, care-free couple in an obstacle-free relationship. It really saddens me to think that their problems have only just begun and that their relationship is yet to face some of the biggest challenges. I so desperately want to see them happy together it hurts!
