City of Fallen Angels Read A Long Day 8: Walk In Darkness

Welcome to Day 8 of the City of Fallen Angels Read-A-Long. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the COLS giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 8: Walk in Darkness

There's a lot that happens in this chapter. Here's a quick over view: We learn of the discovery of the demon baby and that someone is using demon magic on babies and killing them, that Raphael despises Camille, that Camille has been killing humans for sport, that Raphael is the reason why Camille left, we learn the Shadowhunters want to capture Camille alive, Jace acts like a jerk to Clary, and holy crap, did Simon just do what I think he did?!?
  • Leave it Cassie to pull at our "mama" sides with the discovery of the dead baby. Do you have any guesses as to who could be behind his death? What sort of link could it have to the Shadowhunters?
  • I was shocked to learn the Camille is as cunning and evil as she is. I know it's her "true nature", but still. Do you think Raphael is lying about what he said, or do you think he really wants nothing to do with Camille and he did send her away?
  • I seriously wanted to yell, "SIMON LEWIS what in the heck are you doing!?" I can not believe he bite Mo. Did you guys see that one coming? What do you think is going to happen to Simon now? Will he embrace the vampire side of himself or be mortified he gave in and had a moment of weakness?

Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

  1. At this point I can honestly say that I remember having no clue what was coming next. BTW - she put me in 'mama' mode when Simon had to deal with his mom.
As far as Camille and Raphael go, I don't trust either one of them.
I can't say that I saw Simon biting Mo, but I knew it was going to be somebody. He was fighting it too much. I think everyone saw it but him.

  2. * I think at that point I had no clue. I definitely went into mama mode a few times in this book.

*I don't think I trusted either of them, but with how uncomfortable Raphael seemed, and then angry, I figured there was more to it.

*OMG I just about died!! I was so shocked!! Not that he bit someone, but that it was that poor little girl. I truly believe it was a moment of weakness though since he had not fed in a while and he was trying to get her to go away. My first thought was WHAT ARE YOU DOING? then it was Oh, poor Simon is going to horrified at what he did!!

  3. The babies - I was kind of shocked that the story went there, but we needed a way to really connect with what Jocelyn went through with Sebastian. "Seeing" the babies ourselves was a good way to do that.

I don't trust any vampires (other than Simon.) I don't believe Raphael and I don't believe Camille....

I knew as soon as Simon did that, he woudl feel HORRIBLE about it. I honestly felt more sorry for him than for Maureen. It was a reminder that he is not human and he can't pretend that he isn't a vampire.

  4. Honestly, nothing shocks me when it comes to Camille. I had an immediate and lasting distrust of her. I don't trust Raphael either though.
I just felt shocked about the baby, but I think it was important. Up until this point we've barely known Jocelyn. I think this is to show that she really did love her son.
Simon and the bite...i think this was to give him a reality check. he's been existing like he is the same person and he's not. he needs to see what he is.

  5. I don't remember what I thought about the baby the first time I read through this. My guess would be that it's Valentine, but we all know he's dead so...who knows. Also, Clary's interaction with the nurse seemed odd to me. Even in rereading, I still don't really get it. Maybe it'll become more significant in later books.

*I'm so confused about what's going on with Raphael and Camille. I don't know who to believe.

*And yes, I was SO shocked when Simon bit Maureen. I didn't see it coming at all.

  6. The baby was a puzzle...such an evil thing with Valentine dead who could be that bad???

With Camille and Raphael...I feel Camille is just awful and I kind of like Raphael...he brought Simon back to Clary...and while he did want Simon dead...I don't think it's personal...He is a traditionalist and Simon is outside of Raphaels comfort zone..

Poor Simon...can't believe he bit Mo....but understand the moment of weakness...He will definitely feel awful and blame himself...

  7. Damn! I really can't answer at any of your questions as I'm reading CoFA for the second time! (:
The only thing I can say is that I remember my face when I've first read of Simon biting Mo!! I was so shocked!I only think this was an inevitable consequence because Simon doesn't drink enough blood to stay alive. Poor Simon, I can only imagine how guilty he could have felt! :(

    1. I can totally relate. I love the read-a-long (obviously - otherwise I wouldn't have created the graphic) but answering the questions without giving anything away is. so. hard. Ugh! LOL!

    2. Yep, really! :D
It's such an huge effort xD
      P.S the graphic is.... WOW!!

  8. There is obviously some connection based on Jocelyn's reaction. Plus the Shadowhunters' killings are happening at the same time, and there is a definite connection between the victims.

I think that Raphael is lying. If he does not like Simon, he can go suck an elf!
{Sorry for the Tenth Kingdom reference....but I could not help myself!)

I hope that Simon will be mortified. Poor guy needs some guidance! And poor, poor, Mo....

  9. I have absolutely no clue who could have killed all these people.

I think Rafael is manipulating Simon; I don't trust him at all.

I think Simon will probably be forced to accept who he is eventually. Something is certainly coming and he'll need to overcome it.

  10. I don’t really have much to say today.
The death kinda freaked me out. I have no idea what was behind it. And linking it to the Shadowhunters was kinda easy. Sebastian is demonic the baby was demonic. One in the same.
Camille had an evil vibe the whole story. I saw it coming. And her and Raphael had issues even though we never saw them together. I wasn’t really surprised.
Simon. I seem to be getting more and more frustrated with him. I didn’t see him with Mo coming though I did sort of see something bad on the way. Poor little Mo though.

  11. I feel like the baby is linked to the shadow hunters deaths. I feel like Jocelyn knows the resemblance with the baby because of Sebastian.

Raphael is a complete liar. He is bending the truth to not only make him look like the docile vampire but a hero. When in reality he is a snake.

Simon is definitely mortified, I mean how can he not be. he has tried so hard for so long to be different from the other vampires and to stay as human as possible. I love you Simon!

  12. I personally trust Camille over Raphael. I'm not exactly sure why- I think it's the fact that Raphael wanted to kill Simon while Camille was willing to let Simon choose if he would support her or not. I don't think she's the most trustworthy or anything, but I believe her story over Raphael's.
As for Simon, I think he's definitely going to regret what he did to Maureen. It's just his nature.

  13. I couldn't believe Simon bit Mo. I don't know if he will be just mortified or if he will not want to go back to animal blood. I really just wanted to slap Jace up the side of his head. I don't know about the baby, maybe a Valentine follower?

  14. Camille or Raphael - who do I trust? Neither! Raphael has lied from the first scene he was in and Camille LEFT the glittery boy!!! No I think that both of them are out for their own benefit and they don't care what it takes to get what they want.

As for Simon - poor Simon. You know, he will show us whether it's just being a vampire that causes you to be creepy evil or if Camille and Raphael have always been creepy evil.

  15. the discovery of the dead baby was really creapy and honestly i have no idea who could be behind it. and camille and raphael are just to sneaky and evil. When simon bit mo i was yelling im my head "noooo!!!!" she was so innocent but he just couldn't help being his true self. simon still wants to be human but he's going to have to sooner or later embrace what he is and use it to his advantage.

  16. I honestly don't have a clue on what the baby may have to do with the Shadowhunters.
Raphael is so not credible to me, I feel I can't trust him as for Camille I think she just wants revemge.
Simon so far had controlled himself but he got weak in this scene and just went for it he needed blood, was hungry. I thought he was gonna like faint and fall off the stage or something. I believe he will finally accept himself as what he is a vampire. This might mean Simon having a subjugate hahahaXD

    Good Night everyone=)

  17. The dead baby was way horrible but it was only a matter of time til we really saw what Jocelyn went through with Johnathan and how truly evil and torturous it was for her. Maybe because Jocelyn was a shadowhunter it would connect every other shadowhunter but other than that I don't see how this would have to do with shadowhunters in general.
I definitely don't trust Raphael. He is a smooth talker and has lied in the past so I don't believe anything he has to say. I was actually shocked at what Camille could actually do. Yes she is an old vampire and very cunning but I never saw her as being evil but I will still believe her over Raphael any day.
I feel bad that Simon bit Mo and I know he will regret that. But with the many times she was around I think it was a matter of time til this happened. I don't see Simon embracing this side, he never wanted it to happen and I'm sure he will make sure it never happens to anyone else again.

  18. *I have no clue XD

*I don't trust Raphael. something is going on between those two...

*I was shocked, but not so much. honestly, I must say that I really wanted him to bite someone.

  19. I would have to say that apart from Simon I think that all the vampires are pretty arrogant and cannot be trusted. I believe Rafael over Camille. Rafael seems to follow the rules. that is why he dislikes Simon. Simon will not conform to the vampire norm and that makes Rafael mad. He tried to kill Simon over being a daylighter because it wasn't vampire normal. Rafael called it politics nothing personal. Rafael may not like the shadow hunters but he would never break the accords. When Camille spoke to Simon she was practically telling Simon to go have lunch on some poor mundane's neck. She is someone that Simon should not be involved with.

  20. I can believe Simone bite Mouren, I think he can control him self as he think and this is not going to be good.

  21. At this point I had absolutely no clue who could have possibly been behind the baby. And that was difficult to read. I definitely wanted to know what was going on after that.

Considering how Raphael was with Simon after he learned that he was a daylighter, it wouldn't have surprised me if he had really sent Camille away. But, with certain downworlders, vampires especially, it's hard to tell when they are telling the truth.

I was actually surprised Simon hadn't bitten someone before that. I kept waiting for him to screw up, but I was still shocked when he finally did, though. At this point I think Simon is going to feel horrible about what he did and beat himself up about it. I also think he's going to do everything he can to make sure it never happens again.
