City of Fallen Angels Read A Long Day 16: Chapter 16: New York City Angels

Welcome to Day 16 of the City of Fallen Angels Read-A-Long. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the COLS giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 16: New York City Angels

Now everything makes sense. We meet Lilith, the one who's responsible for all the chaos that's been going. We not only get to know a little more about her, but we learn she's the one behind the baby deaths at the church, sent those guys after Simon, was the one who quite possibly had Maureen turned (put her in the cage so she did turn into a vampire) and she has Sebastian/Jonathan's body. We also learn that Sebastian/Jonathan is indeed dead, but not for much longer AND Lilith is most likely the person who's been controlling Jace.
  • Were you guys shocked that it's Lilith and not Sebastian who's been behind everything that's been going on lately? It was obvious that someone was behind all this, but I had no idea it was Lilith.
  • The fact that Lilith wants to create a new race of Shadowhunters is a bit alarming. I can see why she'd want Sebastian/Jonathan to lead her new race, but why do you think she wants Jace and Clary, and what could their role be in Lilith's plans for her new race?
  • What do you think Lilith meant when she comments to Simon that Clary never told him...."An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. To prevent chaos there must be order. If a life is given to the Light, a life is owed to the Dark as well." (pg 332)?

Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

    1. I did not know who was behind everything, but I never thought it was Sebastian. I thought it was someone extremely powerful associated with the Circle, perhaps, but I was wrong.

Lilith said that Clary had unbalanced things....an eye for an eye....a life for a life...to prevent chaos there must be order, and all that...But I also think that Lilith has discovered that she can manipulate Simon by using Clary.

I have no idea why Lilith said this because it isn't like Clary really knows what she is doing half the time.....she sees runes and creates them. Unless she was trying to pass blame and turn Simon against Clary {as if}....

*These were my thoughts when I read it the first time....*

    2. *I had no idea it was Lilith, but I didn't think it was Sebastian either. I thought maybe one of the old Circle members had gotten a warlock or greater demon to do their bidding. It was quite a surprise that it was Lilith.

*I think that she needs Clary because she is someone who Simon will do anything for. Since Lilith can't force him without suffering the wrath of God, she needs leverage against him. If she threatens Clary's life, she knows Simon will do what he needs so. I also think that she needs Jace for some reason too besides bringing Clary there. Since he is the one who was brought back and disrupted the natural order I think the ritual must include him somehow.

*She was talking about bringing Jace back. She knows that Clary didn't tell Simon or anyone about Jace dying and her bringing him back. Since Clary brought someone good back, now someone evil should rise to restore order.

I have to say I was a bit more perceptive this time when I read it, but those are my thoughts from the first time I read it I think.

    3. *I was completely surprised that it was Lillith. We had heard of her much before this book (or at all?) so I didn't think of her. I think the first time I read it I thought it might be Valentine...? Haha.

*I think the first time I read the book, I thought maybe she wanted Clary for her power.

*I think with that quote she meant that since a life (Jace) was brought back to the Light, then she should be able to bring another "dark" life back, meaning evil Sebastian.

    4. * I was shocked the first time I read it that it was Lilith behind it all. I just assumed that it was probably Camille.

      * On my first read, my thought about her needing Clary was two-fold. First, I thought that Clary would be the only person that both Simon and Jace would do anything Lilith wanted to protect her. Secondly, Clary was the key behind the balance of things. I thought because she brought back Jace that she would have to bring back Sebastian.

*My thought about the quote was that the light balancing with the dark would be bringing back Jace as the good would only be balanced by bringing back Sebastian as the evil counterpart.

    5. So hard to answer this one with no spoilers x3
I really couldn't imagine that it was Lilith who was behind all this, I mean I knew that Sebastian was involved in some way but I couldn't think about who was planning to create a new race. Actually I didn't even know that Lilith was still alive.
It is clear in the last part of the chapter that Lilith knows that she can't force Simon to do anything. So until now, I suppose she needs Clary to threaten him. :)

    6. It never occured to me it was Lilith...I assumed Sebastain had survived...someway/somehow and was the evil mastermind

Probably needs Clary as leverage with Simon...she can't make him do anything...the Mark protects him...but for Clary he would do anything...Jace and Clary because they created the imbalance...so they need to be there to equalize it

The quote ties in with Jace (good ) came back to even the universe Sebastion ( evil ) should come back

    7. well i was so shocked to find out it was lilith and not sebastian. but i cant believe hes somewhat.... alive. and i dont really know what lilith ment when she told simon that clary kept something from him. but i have a guess at what that might be and lets just say its not going to be good. and i cant guess why lilith needs jace and clary for her new race of shadowhunders.

    8. I had sweared it was Sebastian but of course I was wrong, is Lilith, a creepy demon which she is a new character to the whole plot. I was kinda sorta shocked but I hace to say that I do like Lilith.

Maybe Lilith wants to mix Nephilim with Vampire so the Nephilim turn immorta. I dunno why would Lilith want Clary.

Maybe Lilith meant that since Clary helped the Light side now it is time to help the Dark side that is what I percieve from the writing.

Have a great rest of the day=)

    9. Lilith took me by surprise. Imagine how ghastly Sebastian must look in that coffin. I just knew that Sebastian involved, but I didn't realize he is somewhat of a bystander.

I'm think Lilith wants Clary for leverage. And I feel like when Lilith was talking about the balance of things that the life for a life has something to do with Jace since Clary had the angel bring him back. Which I contemplate that since Sebastian and Jace had both died that somehow they are interlinked.

    10. I had assumed it was Sebastian, just because there didn't seem to be anyone else who could be behind it. Lookig back, the clues Cassandra Clare left seem obvious, but unless you're an expert on demon mythology and just happen to know the names of Lilith (like Alec), it's unlikely that anyone would pick up on the foreshadowing the first time through. That's what's nice for me, reading it again- I can figure out the clues as they happen, because I know where they're leading to in the plot.
I'm really hoping that Maia and Jordan work things out- I feel sorry for him, and even if he doesn't win Maia back, I really hope they can at least have some sort of understanding.

    11. I think it means jonathan will be coming back. I really liked how Simon is so conflicted with maureen. I really feel bad for him.

    12. Stunned! I was so sure it was Sebastian the whole time - though I didn't know how. Lilith had played such a small part in past books, I never even considered her. Never even gave her a second thought. Cassie is brilliant of course.

    13. Well I wasn’t exactly surprised by Lilith. Camille said some things that stomped out the idea of Jonathin in my head.
Man! I can’t answer two and three again!!! THIS IS SO DIFFICULT!!!

For some reason, I really liked this chapter though.

    14. I had no clue who had been behind everything, but as soon as we learned I just thought, "Oh crap!" I knew it wasn't good and we were in for a roller coaster ride.

Whatever he crazy, overall plan was, I had absolutely know idea why she would want both Jace and Clary and what their roles could be. BUT, since they both have angel blood that could be/and probably is a major reason why.

I think it had to do with a sacrifice of some kind. Hinting at Jace being brought back, so now he has to offer something to Dark as well...

    15. *I had no idea it was Lilith. I thought it was Sebastian.

*I think the major reason is that they both have angel blood. in addition of that, I think that she needs Clary because she is important for Simon, and Lilith needs Simon to join her.

*She was talking about bringing Jace back. She knows that Clary didn't tell Simon or anyone about Jace dying and her bringing him back. Since Clary brought someone good back, now someone evil should rise to restore order.

*I have no idea why Lilith said this!

      great chapter :D

    16. I think Lilith wants Jace and Clary because they are special shadow hunters, Jace has angels blood in his vain and Clary can make runes no body else knows and she is Jonathan/Sebastian sister.
