City of Fallen Angels Read A Long Day 19: Hell Is Satisfied

Welcome to Day 19 of the City of Fallen Angels Read-A-Long. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the COLS giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 19: Hell Is Satisfied
  • Aw, poor Jace. My heart really broke for Jace in this scene. Do you think he'll be able to recover from all that's happened and gain that inner strength we've all come to admire about him back?
  • Were you guys surprised over Alec's actions with Clary? I was a little surprised he would be so quick heal her for Jace and than briefly talked to her about Jace. I like that Clary observes how much he's changed and the surety he know has.
  • Jace and Sebastian are now as one, meaning they're now bound to each other. If the stele that Clary used to cut Jace to sever his tie to Lilith wasn't strong enough to break his bound with Sebastian, do you think anyone or anything else can break it?
Tomorrow we're conclude the read a long with our over all thoughts of COFA and talk about our COLS predictions.

Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

  1. *This chapter was so heart wrenching. Listening to him explain how he knew what was happening, but couldn't stop it. Didn't even want to really. *sob* I am really scared for him because he is so broken. I know he has the strength inside of him, and I hope he can find it again, but how many times can one be broken and still be put back together? Especially with a bind to someone so evil.

*I love the interaction between Alec and Clary. I do think that Alec has changed. He knows what it's like to love that deeply and I think that he understands what Jace and Clary have.

*I don't think that the knife Clary used, or a stele, or acid, or anything else would be powerful enough. It's very dark magic and I think it would take a lot to break it. I do believe it can be done, but I think it would probably be a complicated ritual and trying to do the ritual will probably be very problematic. I think that Magnus is the best hope they have. There may be something in the book of white to sever the tie.

I think reading this chapter for the second time was almost worse. Knowing what was going to happen was agonizing. Gripping the pages going "No, no, no" The first time I knew something would happen, just not that.

  2. *Yes, I think Jace will be able to recover from this, with help from Clary and his family. But I am worried about this whole binding business. I think that might make his recovery harder. I'm wondering what exactly the binding does but I guess we'll find out in CoLS!

*I was happy to see Alec being nice to Clary, and I wasn't all that surprised about it. Alec has moved on...

*I think something will be able to break the bond...at least I hope so!

  3. My heart is breaking for Jace, too. I am so worried that he won't forgive himself. The whole creepy "little brother" business sounds insurmountable.

Alec has matured more than the rest of the teens. I love how confident he is, and he is becoming a very competent leader.

I am thinking that *maybe* the book of spells Magnus wants will be able to help. I also want to know why Magnus really wants it. Because Alec and Jace are parabatai, and because of Magnus's relationship with Alec, I think Magnus will play a major role in finding a solution to the Sebastian/Jace problem.

I cannot wait until Tuesday! I am cooking most of the day today so I won't have to cook Tuesday....I will be too busy reading! ;P

  4. Clary understands completely but Jace is a person who doesn't want forgive himself, it will take a long time knowing what he did seeing what he did but not actually hinself doing it. That sounds confusing-_-.

Well Jace and Alec are parabatai so Alec listened to what Jace wanted him to do. I think is good Alec and Clary should be close friend hence Clary abd Jace are together that way Clary can learn more about Jace.

I think it will be difficult to break the bond between Sebastian and Jace even for the Silent Brothers, maybe Clary with her creating-new-runes skill can create a rune to break them two apart

I'm excited for Tuesday!! Though I don't have enough money to buy on the day of the release=(. I will have to wait. Everyone have a great rest of the day=)

  5. This book caused me an emotional breakdown! I'm particulary in love with Jace, he's kind an obsession for me and this chapter really breakes my heart. He had to face so many problem during his brief life, and finally when he seems to be in peace with the ones he loves (CoG) everything change negatively. :'( Knowing his personality I think he will never be able to recover from what happened completely.
I have to say I was a little disappointed by Clary in the last scene. I mean, I supposed she would have stayed with Jace after all that happened but conversely she was about to go away. Luckily Alec did something to pull her outside the elevator! She knows how Jace reacts to this kind of situation and he absolutely needs someone near him. Speaking of Alec, it seems like is maturated in those last 3 chapters, after the meeting with Camille and I love this new Alec! :)
I really can't find any solution to break the bound between Sebastian and Jace and this scares me so much!! Re-reading this part was agonising! I was so sad the first time and the second was almost worse, if it is possible! Moreover the book trailer for the sequel is so creepy brrr
I'm sure Cassandra will really surprise us in CoLS

  6. i will agree, my heart did break for jace. he has been through alot and has gotten through it, especiallly with clary's help. i do think he will get through it because he has people who love him. but it may take a long time for him, becaue hes stubborn but it will happen. i wasnt so surprised alec was so quick to help clary. it was sweet that he talked to clary about jace. he's his parabati he cares for jace. it worried me when i found out jace a sebastian were bonded. i thought clary broke that connection. but i believe something will be able to break that connection. love will prevail.

  7. Jace is wicked strong and what will end up putting him back together will be his love for Clary and her love for him. We will see the strong Jace again. I'm sure of it.

As for breaking the connection between Sebastian and Jace - I've no doubt it CAN be done but it will be wrenching to watch.

  8. I think that Jace is a lot stronger than he gives himself credit for. And considering how he takes the blame for anything that happens, I think it'll take a lot for him to come to terms with. He doesn't trust himself.

No, I wasn't too surprised. You could see the change in their relationship once Alec finally accepted that he didn't really love Jace. I also think there's so much more to Alec than we've been able to see.

Poor Jace. He just always seems to get the short end of the stick. And my heart broke when this happened, it was like all of Jace's worst fears came to fruition when this happened. Though I don't know exactly how, I do believe there will be a way to break the bond between them. Whether or not it happens in COLS or not, I don't know. But, I do think we'll be surprised, Cassie always seems to know just how to do that.

  9. *I am so worried that he won't be able to recover from this... but even so, I think that he is stronger than he thinks.

*I wasn't too surprised -Alec has matured alot.

*I do think it can be done (at least I hope so!), but I think it would probably be *REALLY* complicated.

  10. This was a tough time for Jace but I am sure he can comeback with Clarys love and support.

Alec has matured alot lately; this was a huge step for him....he now has Magnus and knows that Jace belongs with Clary

Yes someone whether Magnus or the Silent Brothers or even the Iron Sisters should be able to break the bond....I hope soon....

  11. OMG this chapter killed me, as it does everytime I read it. I sure hope that Jace can become himself again, for Clary's sake. Lilth definately took a toll on him. And now he's connected to Sebastian, holy crap. There has to Bs some way to separate the two I just know it. As far as Alec, I believe that he's love and affection with Magnus and their relationship have made Alec a more caring and sensitive person. And he's now allowed to be Jace's parabarti and not following him along like a love sick puppy dog.

  12. Yes, I feel sorry for Jace, but at the same time, I'm with Clary- I was actually a little angry with him. He is almost too self-deprecating, and I just want to slap him and say, Hey! Clary still loves you, you're still a good person! Get over it!
And I really do hope he gets over it, because as much as I like seeing vulnerable Jace, I'm starting to miss his usual snarky self.
Alec was amazing in this chapter. He has matured so much and turned into such a cool person. He's move past the place where his biggest defining characteristic was his unrequited love for Jace, and now he's free to be his own person.
Ahhhh! The ending of this kills me! Everything seems like it's going to be okay, and what else could happen? There's only five pages left.... Never underestimate how much Cassie Clare can break your heart in five pages.

  14. I think it will be tough, but Jace is just so strong and determined. I see him bouncing back to our loving Jace but I also think this will harden him a little and also make him wiser.
Alec's actions were a little shocking, only with the fact that he attended to Clary before Jace. But it is clear that Alec loves Clary like a sister now so him taking care of her was just so sweet.
I think it's going to take so majorly deep, old magic to sever the bond between Jace and Johnathan. So yes I'm sure there is a way, it will just be extremely difficult to figure out and even harder to actually do.

  15. I love the little bit with Alec and Clary. It seemed so brotherly, like he has accepted that she is with Jace (his ‘brother’) and treats her like she may one day be his sister (or sister in law). I think it really shows how Alec has grown through the series and how he is confident in himself and doesn’t care who knows it.

I think everything that happened in CoG just threw Jace’s world off. He grew up believing something then found out it wasn’t true. It messed him up. I think it’s similar to what happened to Will in CP only Will was more visual about it.

I didn’t like how this chapter ended. It seemed very Harry Potter like. Like how Harry and Voldemort were linked (Harry as the horcrux) and you couldn’t kill one without killing the other. Wow. I just realized I am such a book nerd. I compared a fictional character to a fictional character. Lovely. Anyway, it seemed like a very Harry Potter like situation and I can’t help but think it will end up worse for Jace than it did for Harry.

  16. I was so mad that neither Clary or Jace thought about what would happen if the cut healed. I almost could keep reading. I just feel sick for Jace, I wish we could be rid of Jonathan for good. Man, I love this series.
