Clockwork Prince Read Along Day #4: Chapter 3

Welcome to Day 4 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 3
  • What are your thoughts on Sophie? There's something about her in chapter 2 that made my heart break for her, as well as love her more than I previously had.
  • Jem is seriously killing me, and in a good way. I've always adored him, but loved Will. There's something about Jem in Clockwork Prince that gives me a glimpse of what Tessa sees in him. What is about Jem that draws you to his character?
  • So Gideon and Gabriel have arrived. What are your thoughts on their training Tessa?
  • I loved the scene with Will and Tessa in the library. These two just need to kiss and to break their tension. What do you make of the quote from A Tale of Two Cities that Will recites? Do you think that it could possibly refer to how he's feeling and what's to come?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. I feel so bad for Sophie. You can tell her feelings for Jem are true and strong and yet she has to watch him fall for Tessa. I do like Jem and think he is a great guy, but I'm still a fan of Will more.

OMG that library scene. I was hoping they would kiss or do something to break the tension, but alas that didn't happen. I love how Tessa starts addressing him properly instead of just saying Will. It seems like she is trying to pull her emotions out of the game so she doesn't get hurt.

Gideon and Gabriel didn't make much of an impression on me. They seem like big bullies, but I don't know enough about them to feel anything yet.

  2. *I really like Sophie. I am a bit heartbroken for her, but she's really a tough chick and I have a lot of respect for her.

*Jem is just so sweet and nice to everyone. He is charming without trying, and he pays attention to the little things. That's what I like about him.

*I like Gabriel, I can tell that there is more to him than meets the eye. I didn't care for Gideon, but I think there is more to him too. It's hard when your dad is a total jerk, so I can see why they act the way they do.

*Oh how I love Will!! I love both him and Jem, but Will just really breaks my heart. I think that Will is a really great person inside, but he is too afraid to let it out. He has very dark secrets from the past that prevent him from being able to be the great guy he really is.

  3. Sophie is a strong and beautiful character that makes my heart break as she watches Jem like another her. She is strong, but there is sadness about her. it makes me sad that Jem does not seem to return her feelings, but i can hope that there will be another man who will appreciate her. Sophie is also a true friend because she doesn't hate Tessa for being close to the boy she likes. she is truthful and admirably.

Jem is so sweet. He is considerate and carring. he sees the best in everyone. He is not bitter or angry about his illness. he accepts it and embraces life. He is loyal and a true friend to Will.

At first Gideon seems rather colds and unemotional but that could change as they continue training. Gabriel seems like he wants to hurt Will by training Tessa. However, they both seem to be good teachers.

There is so much tension between Tessa and Will. Tessa is hurt and it seems like Will is trying to make her understand the things he said to her by taking about books. the quote about the tale of two cities seems like Wills trying to talk about his emotions. he can not be with her because he will hurt her. He seems to think that he is the drunk, wasted man who like in the book doesn't deserve Lucie or Tessa. he is relating himself to this character. this just makes me love him more.

  4. ~I love Sophie--despite her scar, in my mind, she's very beautiful, and her comment towards Jem about not making fun of the fact that she'll need the training to fight off the unwanted attention of gentlemen was very sad to read. She doesn't think she's beautiful, and therefore she has put it into mind that no other man will either.
~Honestly, what draws me most to Jem is the fact that he plays the violin. I'm a sucker for a violin player. (My favorite band has a classically trained guitar player, and he plays the violin in their newest album.) It has been about two years since I first picked up the Infernal Devices, so I can't exactly remember why I began to like Jem, but it's the vulnerability I, personally, see whenever I read anything that pertains to him. It's odd, but like him, I have come to the terms with the fact that he may well die, and though I would cry if anything happens to him, if Cassie decided to write Clockwork Princess that way, I know that she has written him as someone who has gotten over that impending death.
~I absolutely cannot stand Gabriel, but I love Gideon. It's both amusing and horrifying that they're training Tessa and Sophie, because it's just a ploy for Benedict, in my opinion, to weasel information about the Institute and Charlotte out without anyone really noticing.
~The quote Will spoke of was after Charlotte had said her father and Starkweather had a falling out; it was about close friends insulting one another and never speaking again--I can't help but think this quote more closely ties Will and Jem together than Will and Tessa, even though the latter had that scene up on the roof at the end of Clockwork Angel. It speaks of something foreboding in my mind, whether it Prince or in Princess, and I fear what Princess has in store for us.

  5. I love Sophie! Every since we met her in Clockwork Angel but I love her even more in CP :)
It broke my heart when she took offense when Jem mentioned that she could use the training to fend off suitors, obviously Jem didn't mean to be sarcastic and knowing Jem's nature he actually did mean what he said as he probably sees Sophie beautiful despite her scar, but still since she is so self-conscious of it she definitely took offence in the comment feeling that she being made fun of :(
I think that this is the first time I thought that Gabriel might not be who I thought he was in a good way, at this point I dont think I had a clear opinion on Gideon yet the first time I read the book.

The library scene between Will and Tessa is one of my favorite scenes between them out of all the scenes between them in both books.
It's tense and awkward, I just feel like screaming "OMG Will could you please just kiss her already!?!?" lol

The quote from Tale of Two Cities I remember thinking about it the first time I read it (it's one of my favorite books) and tough I thought Will was reciting it for a reason I couldn't imagine why it would describe his particular situation, the subsequent times I've read this book I of course had no doubt that every single word in that quote most certainly fits his situation down to the last bit.

  6. I love this chapter too, love the introduction of the new characters and seeing more depth in the characters we know. Seeing Sophie tell Jem off for insulting (unintentionally) her. Also seeing Jem & Tessa interact more. And Henry even stands up to the younger ones more, well kind of. All along the tension between Will & Tessa is still there.

  7. I think I'm starting to like Sophie.. After reading CA, I just know there's more to her and her story. She has a strong character and that's what I like most about her. I can't wait to see what's next for our dear Sophie.
If there was anything that I adore about Jem, it's that he's always been honest, open and genuine. He doesn't say things he doesn't mean and he always shows that he cares, and I think even to the people who doesn't deserve it from him.
Oh, the Lightwoods! William should be in his very best behavior.. It would be very interesting to see the brothers train Tessa. I wonder how they'll interact with each other considering in CA, Tessa didn't like Gabriel so much.
Oh my, Tessa and Will are killing me. I just love it when they talk and quote books.. I think when Will wants to say something and he doesn't want to say it directly, he turns to books and quote them. I bet what he said to Tessa has some sort of truth to what he feels for her.. poor William..

  8. I really enjoyed this chapter. Okay! I admit, its totally because of the scene with Will and Tess. They belong with each otherr!
I do like Sophie. And I think her feelings for who she likes are really cute, they might even make a nice pair.
I love Jem. He's just so really genuine, honest and kind. He's a really strong character and he'e everything wonderful and nice.

  9. I feel sad for Sophie, too and I really want her her happy end. But not with Jem. I don't think he is the true love for her.
Jem... I really like him, but I don't know. I still think that Will and Tessa need to be together. For example in the library. We can feel the sparks there! Will cares about her didn't matter what he said. I think he quotes the Tale of Two Cities becauese he's connected to Sydney. He feels the same as Sydney and because of it he sees the whole novel in a different way.
I don't really like Gideon and Gabriel but it can change. We don't know much about him. But it's funny that Gideon speaks Spanish when he does'nt want the others understand him.

By the way we do this Read-A-Long in Hungary, as well. :) So thank you for it! Clockwork Princess doesn't come here till December, and CP came out last December but we reread it with you. :)

  10. I like Sophie, I liked her in the Clockwork Angel too. She has a tragic past but I hope she'll has happy future.
Oh Jem! I love Will too but Jem is so clear. He has a beautiful soul. I'm very sad because of he's dying. He doesn't deserve this.
Gabriel and Gideon. I don't know. I must to know more about them.
Who are you really, Will? You are more inside so why don't you let it out? Tessa and Will would be a perfect couple. I think the quote refer to how he's feelings.

  13. I agree- I see Sophie as beautiful as well. I feel as though Tessa, Jen and Will do also. It is difficult to watch one fall for another. But Jem's friendship is genuine. I hope she stays true to herself and doesn't let jealousy get the better her. I would love to see her end up with Jem. I'm still hoping they find a cure for him.

Jem, ugh! Naturally kind and playful. His subtle sarcasm is wonderful to see. I think Tessa will find her feelings growing for him. Mine certainly are.

Not sure about the brothers. Think they are bullies as well but can see why they behave as they do. Will be interesting to see how big of a role they play. I like them training the girls. I think having Jem or Will train them would be difficult and not as effective. And the anonymousity between the boys will and entertaining element.

The library scene was amazing! Oh the sweet torture watching the dance between Will and Tessa. Seeing her attempt to harden her heart where Will is concerned is disheartening. I so want to see them together. Their wordplay is such fun but it's obvious Will will continue to keep her at arms length for a time, but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.

  14. I like Sophie because she's a smart girl. She knows that Will is dangerous, and she sees how special Jem is. I love both Jem and Will, but a smart girl would fall for Jem! (JMHO)

Jem pays attention to others and is thoughtful. He is kind and giving. He's smart, loyal, and he sees the good in Will which is very admirable! I also have a soft spot for musicians. I love how he lives in the moment (probably because of his health). I could go on and on.....

I think the Lightwoods in the institute has little to do with training Sophie or Tessa.

I think Will quotes the passage from A Tale of Two Cities as a warning, or perhaps an explanation to Tessa about why he keeps pushing her away.

  15. Sophie is such a lovely and endearing character. I loved her insight from the start of this series, so to see her suffer, when she’s so resilient and strong, pulls out all my sympathies. She’s definitely a favorite of mine. I also wonder if maybe there might be something there for Cyril and Sophie, in the end.

Jem is such a gentle person, and that draws me to him. He’s polite and good natured with a surprisingly good sense of humor that I find myself falling for unintentionally. I thought he was wonderful to begin with and still find him a lovely person. I can’t help but wonder if Tessa is starting to feel like me, slowly and unknowingly falling in love with Jem.

The Lightwood brothers are at least dutiful Shadowhunters, taking the training sessions seriously. I really want to like them, or at least Gideon, as Gabriel keeps disappointing me but hopefully these two will become more likable. A large task to undertake with Benedict Lightwood as their father, I’m sure. The fact that Gabriel chooses Tessa of the two makes me wonder if he’s really after Will, trying to aggravate him, or if he thinks Tessa is the most important trainee to spy on of the two women, wanting to make himself more important and hopefully better in his father’s eyes should he find anything out. And so I wonder if I’ll end up liking Gideon more, since he doesn’t seem so overeager to please Benedict. Cyril and Bridget will sure to make things interesting around the Institute. Bridget seems…feisty…to say the least.

That library scene nearly ripped my heart out. I always feel like I’m in the same situation as Tessa—determine to stay objective but unable to disconnect my feelings over the boy. The way Tessa describes her feelings for Will while in his presence is dead on to my own feelings. And Will? What is he doing, being so mercurial? I do understand his perspective as it’s not so different from Tessa’s. He wants to be closer, but is too scared to actually be with Tessa. He just can’t help himself. He can’t stay away. And to speak to Tessa about A Tale of Two Cities as he does, he tries so hard to show her what his perspective is and say what he cannot say to her—that he’s not safe for her and she should stay away from him. But the other quote from Coleridge, when Will speaks of the two friends who end their amity, makes me fear that the unknowingly competing friends, Jem and Will, might come to a falling out over Tessa.

What was with Jessamine in this chapter? A headache, really? Still don’t know what she was doing at the end of chapter two but it better explain that ‘headache’ of hers! And finally J.T.S! John Thaddeus Shade, a warlock—a loved one of Mortmain—killed by Shadowhunters along with Anne Evelyn Shade. So there’s the motive. One mystery solved, hundreds more to decipher!

  16. On page 52, Sophie totally thought Jem was making fun if her saying "..it's always useful for a beautiful girl to be able to fend off the unwanted attentions of gentlemen." And I think Jem meant it but Sophie never thought of herself beautiful because of her scar. Sophie thinks just because she is scared that she's unattractive but its not true. I know what makes us more beautiful and ALL of the scars and flaws that make us who we are. If a man can not truly accept you for all your flaws, he's just NOT THE ONE! Our cars remind us that we've come along way and to not make the same mistake that caused the scar in the first place. Our flaw is just proof that we are human and we makes mistakes and millions more but that's who we are. I do love Sophie more as well because in this chapter, her emotions are being shown/ acted out with almost every mention of Sophie. Her character is seeping through the pages with an "I'm NOT just a servant" kind of attitude.

Jem has that kindness to him that shines. Everything about him glows and there isn't dimness about it. He loves everyone and even Sophie adores him. He doesn't complain or use his weakness as an excuse. He tries just a hard and it doesn't take much effort for him to smile and earn yours right back. He doesn't speak out of turn and seems to ALWAYS have the right thing to say at the right time. He's like someone you can't say no to or not even try to get along with. He's attractive in every way and the only thing holding him back from a long prosper future is his illness. He's just lovable.

Gabriel is the one training Tessa and as she has explained, he's good at what he's doing. He's fairly patient, willing to pick up time after countless times of her dropping the sword and even praises her when she does something right.

The quote of "A Tale of Two Cities" is a perfect example of how Will is with Tessa. His feelings for her. "There is no future for Sydney, is there, with or without love? He knows he cannot save himself without Lucie, but to let her near him would be to degrade her." Will is pushing Tessa away with words. He's hinting her. Giving her clues of his feelings for her that seeping through his skin. He loves her and wants to be with her but because of the curse, he doesn't want to hurt her. And to the last paragraph on page 67 'it had been possible . . . That you could have returned the love of the man you see before yourself--flung away, wasted, drunken, poor creature of misuse as you know him to be--he would have been conscious this day to misery, bring your sorrow and repentance, blight you, disgrace you, pull you down with him--." Can she still accept him for all that's happen to him? Because he did her wrong, and he's so emotionally and mentally bruised that he doesn't know what to do anymore. He's tormented inside. It is like a hint to what's to come but also a pop of the bubble if.. (Can't spoil it!)
