Clockwork Prince Read Along Day #6: Chapter 5

Welcome to Day 6 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 5

  • "Shall we go in, my betrothed?" Jem said softly in her ear. Who else sighed over this moment? I also love Will's reaction to Jem and Tessa acting like they're betrothed.
  • I loved that Will was the one to come and wake Tessa from her nightmare. I don't know about you guys, but that moment between the two of them had me yelling at her to just kiss him. What do you guys make of Tessa's nightmare? Do you think there's some relevance to it or was just that, a nightmare?
  • Who do you think Cecily is? *if you've read CP before and know the answer, who did you think she was the first time you read about her?* It's obvious from Will's reaction to seeing the young girl she's someone who's connected to his past.
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. * Ahhh I loved that scene!! I think that it was so sweet. I also felt a bit bad for Will. It kind of breaks my heart!

    * The first time I read this I totally forgot about the nightmare because of Will lol!! I so love Will and Jem and it tears me apart. I have never had a love triangle be so hard on me!

    * I thought that Cecily was Will's sister.

  2. Jem plays the part so well. they looked so cute together and Jem was so sweet.

I think the nightmare had some relevance. i love how Will came to Tessas aid. it also broke my heart when Will is sent away by Tessa. they should be together.

I think Cecily is someone from Will s past. Related to will, a sister.

  3. LOL definitely a sigh-worthy moment, when Jem said that to Tess.

I think that it was a nightmare brought on my the stress of seeing the "spoils." I would have had a nightmare, too. Plus, I do think that there was symbolism in Henry's quote about her heart being "divided into two quite equal parts..." ;P I think the biggest question is what was Will doing prior to waking Tessa up from her nightmare. Was he standing guard, I wonder?

My first thought about Cecily was that she must be family by her description and Will's reaction upon seeing her.

    LOVED this chapter!

    Thanks for hosting the read-a-long,

  4. Since I like Jem, but don't want him with Tessa I didn't have much reaction to him calling her his betrothed. I apparently have something against the nice guy. Oops!

I was so upset for Tessa not kissing Will, but I understand that she has some serious doubts. I wish Will would get over himself and confess his true feelings for her.

I have to admit I thought that Cecily was someone that Will was in love with or cared deeply about. I thought more along the lines of an ex-girlfriend.

  5. I actually thought it was kinda cute but not in a i-want-them-to-get-together way. I love SO MUCH, but I really think Tessa should be with Will. So its obvious to be seriously upset when she didn't kiss will arghhh.
Ermm, Cicely... when I first read CP I just assumed it was someone who's close to Will.

  6. Eeeecckkk!! I love this chapter! Jem and Tessa pretending to be betrothed is definitely something. I don't know about you but I find it very sweet and charming. Although I'm definitely Team Will and his reaction.. I just want to kill him - he wants Tessa but he keeps pushing him away. All Herondales are so stubborn.

That was definitely a moment! Will was so sweet and I was screaming for them to just kiss. I really think Tessa's dream has some sort of relevance. I think Ms. Cassie writes in a way that readers have to be very observant 'cause everything is just connected and there are sort of small, hard-to-see clues.

Honestly? I had two thoughts about Cecily - it was either she was family or she was involved with Will romantically. I have read Clockwork Prince already though and now I know the truth and everything was quite a twist.

  7. In my opinion that most important part of this chapter is Aloysius Starkweather's reaction to Tessa.... I remember the first time I read CP the first thing I thought about his reaction was "there is more to this, we will find out that Aloysius Starkweather is wayyyyyy more involved in all this than just provide info about reparations"

The Tessa and Will moment was the best, I love their moments :) But I also felt so bad for Will, cause you can just feel all the love he has for Tessa but on the other hand you can also understand Tessa's reluctance to let him get hear, she doesn't know his reasons and if you dont know them then he is comes across as a total jerk... He breaks my hear though because I know his heart is breaking when Tessa pulls away from him and he tells her that he does not regret the things he told her after the funerals.

As far as Cecily I will give my impression about this from when I read CP for the first time, Tessa mentions her black hair, and even though she is not able to see any other feature, the way she describe this young girl with black hair immediately made me assume that she was related to Will somehow...

  8. When Jem said that particular line I rolled my eyes. It’s such a cheesy thing to say. Will is standing right there, watching this whole thing, and I couldn’t help but wonder how he was feeling as the third wheel. I bet it sucked, since Tessa just ignored that gift from him. Like being kicked when you’re down.

So does anyone care about that whole situation with Starkweather? That was weird…He reacted to Tessa like he knew her, or at least recognized her face. Tessa doesn’t seem to remember him though. I can only imagine what’s going on there. I feel that if someone reacted to me like that I would have asked questions. I’m a bit irritated that Tessa didn’t.

Adele Starkweather—I wonder if Adele is a Shadowhunter name like Jonathan since Clary’s middle is Adele, or at least that’s what her brother said. So it makes me wonder if Clary might be related to the Starkweathers or if it’s just a common name among the Nephilim.

So John Thaddeus Shade was up to no good with the Book of White, tying and untying souls to bodies. If I remember correctly, doing such an act properly would make those Clockwork creatures more human-like and less glitchy. And all this talk of spells and Mortmain makes me wonder yet again if Tessa really is a Clockwork person, perhaps perfectly crafted with the Book of White? Maybe Mortmain had a copy of the spell kept in secret as he continues to create clockwork creatures. I can’t be sure, but Mortmain mentioning that he ‘created’ Tessa makes me think she must be something mechanical. Then of course, there is Tessa’s Clockwork Angel pendant to think about.

Tessa’s nightmare seems to focus on her own self-conscious issues with possibly being a warlock. But that last part about Henry put me right back into thinking Tessa could be made of nuts and bolts, given a soul by Mortmain or someone, making her seem like a normal human. And I suppose there is something metaphorical about a heart split in two, bringing to mind Will and Jem. But it could mean other things, like she maybe simply conflicted with whom she is and what she really is, dividing her heart. When Will comes into wake her, I wonder if he’s been watching her sleep rather than simply passing by. He did say Tessa cried out and I think she might have said his name. He didn’t get to elaborate further so we can only guess, as Tessa cut him off and said she didn’t call for him. But how does she know? She was asleep. I don’t think she should’ve kissed him, a hug would have been nice since she was so scared and panicked, but a kiss with someone you feel so unsure about would’ve made things more complicated. I’m more upset that Will didn’t tell her how he felt or the whole story about his situation. Instead he just lies, and goes with what he told her on the roof like an idiot. I want to hit him on the back of the head for that.

Cecily—I ruined her identity earlier when I looked something up on Will’s Shadowhutner Wiki page. I couldn’t remember what happened to his parents, so I doubled checked online and saw who Cecily is and I thought I remembered reading who she was somewhere in Clockwork Angel, but since everyone else doesn’t seem to know who she is, I guess you don’t find out who she is until later. But due to Will’s reaction, I think it’s obvious she’s important to him.

  9. Holy moly, what a chapter! Jem's comment was cute and cheesy. I think it hurt Will. It would've hurt me.

I also want to know where and what Will was doing before he came in to Tessa's room. She should have kissed him. KIss him! Kiss! Him! I'm certain Henry's quote means "something". And I think it was more than the spoils.

I love the Starkweather comments. I want to know more about Adele.

Cecily? My initial response was a former flame? He seemed completely in shock. I'm not sure what to think.

  10. * I like that Jem part but I can't really love it. Jem is very romantic and cute how he's trying but I still think that Tess's true love is Will. And his reaction is break my heart.
    * That part when Will woke up Tessa I really loved. It's nice that he's the one who freed Tessa from the Dark Sisters and now he is the who wakes up Tessa from that dream. And he is very caring here, he really loves Tessa, but... About the dream, when Henry holds Tessa's heart and it's still beating. I couldn't think to the necklace what's beating with Tessa's heart.
    * Cecily. I actually already knew who Cecily is when I read the book, so...

  11. Yep! There was a big sigh. Jem is Jem. I'm glad to this moment because we saw more about Will.
When Tessa had that nightmare I thought that Jem will wake Tessa. I don't worry about it....there will be kisses I'm sure. I think the nightmare is not just a nightmare. Maybe it's a sign.
Unfortunately I saw a spoiler about Cecily, so I know who is she.

  12. On pg 87, second half, Will wanted Tessa be pretend to be the one falling madly in love w him, not agreeing to be Jem's fiancée. Will already showed a disagreement when Tessa felt that he was watching her when the train headed into the dark tunnel. (I felt it too) Though Will never seems to take what Jem wants and doesn't say otherwise. And on pg 90, when Will says Tessa needs a ring if she were to be Jem's fiancé, not thinking Jem had one prepared but hoping he can turn the situation around and have Tessa as his fiancé because he was actually wearing his Herondale ring. (Think about it, seems like that's what Will was trying to aim for). But when Jem called Tessa as his betroth, I definitely sighed. It's cute. Jem said it w/o hesitance, naturally like they really were, as though Jem already accepted his play date as for real.

I think Tessa's nightmare was hinting at her of what might of happened from lost memories or what might happen but vaguely hinting or maybe, maybe a glimpse of what could be. When it comes to Cassie and her awesome world where we are trying to keep one foot in our world to stay alive and another to be lost in hers.. I wouldn't doubt for one second she could be hinting us something that might happen in CP2. Cassie is awesome like that. Like she's mentioned before when she gives her characters so many problems/reasons/history, anything relevant and carries on it could mean its important (if you guys get what I'm trying to say or I'm the only one in this cloud).

The first time i read of Cecily, I thought she was the sister he lost (ok, this might be very confusing for me bc I don't want to give away any spoilers to the new readers also bc I read all of CP and ch1 of Cp2, so I may have all my infos jumbo'ed up somehow (pretty much what I read I'm not sure when and where or from which chapter or what book, lol)). So I'm sorry first if I did/will spill anything. A pardoned oopsie I hope ^_^¥. I don't rmbr when or if Will ever gave us by memory (his POV) or to anyone about his past. I don't rmbr if he mentioned the sister who past away or the living one who's grown up. I think before when I first read, she could of been an ex lover and wondered before that (practically leaped to conclusion) that Tessa could get super jealous.

P.s. I think the quote beginning on ch4 is about the mention of Will and Jem's parabatai explanation starting from the last part of pg91.
