Only 17 more days till Clockwork Princess is out!!!

Welcome to Day 11 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 10
  • Well, this chapter revealed a little bit of shocking history from Gideon and Gabriel. What are you thoughts on what these two brothers have revealed about Charlotte and her family, her family ties to theirs?
  • I LOVED Sophie's reaction in this chapter. I never would have imagined her slap anyone, let alone Gabriel. I don't know if I'm more in shock over her doing that, or his reaction to her. What do you make of Gideon's reaction to her slapping his brother?
  • It's about time Will got some sensed talked into him, though I don't know how much of what Tessa told him about what he's doing effects Jem, really sunk in. How much of Will's action do you feel are sincere and much of his actions do you think are a show? In Tessa's conversation with him about how he acted the previous night, I think it's all for show. I think that his actions are a cover for more than what he's running from. I think Jem's dying is effecting Will in more ways than he really wants to admit. What do you guys think?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. * I was not really shocked. I mean, we all know that Charlotte's family has made some people angry, but I was surprised that Gideon was so okay about the situation.

    * I had the biggest grin on my face after Sophie slapped Gabriel. He totally deserved it and I was so happy to see Sophie come out of her timid shell a little bit. I didn't expect any different reaction from him. That is exactly how I thought he would take it.

    * I agree that everything he does is an act. I believe that Will is a great person. I think he's scared for everyone around him, for his family, and especially for Jem. And oh, now re-reading this I almost wish they hadn't been interrupted so Will could have finished what he had to say.

  2. It was surprising but not really shocking. I knew that the Lightwoods had some sort of grievance with Charlotte, but I didn't know what it was. It does make me feel a bit more for Gideon (not really Gabriel though). I'm glad he's so mature as to know that it is the fault of the parents and not of the children.

I loved tha Sophie slapped Gabriel. I'm sure we all wanted to at that point and at least it stopped Will from doing something that I'm sure he would have done if Gabriel had continued. Gideon is so great. I really hope that he and Sophie end up together. He's very sweet, kind and understanding.

I really do believe that Will loves Jem and will do anything for him. He puts on this tough guy act around everyone, but I think that is just to distance people because of his curse. I think that the thought of there not being any medicine scares Will because the thought of being without Jem scares Will.

  3. I think a lot of what Will does is all for show, you can tell from the parts of the book that are in his POV that he really is a good person, he just doesn't get the chance to be. Re-reading this it is obvious Will is a lot more effected by the thought of Jem dying than he lets on, because Jem is all he has in the world. I doubt he feels there would be much left for him once Jem has passed and his curse prevents him from being with Tessa.
The fact he almost slips up when talking to Tessa, when he begins to tell her that he cant look at her without worrying what she thinks of him, just shows how weary he is of the whole charade.

  4. ~I didn't believe what Gabriel said for a single minute. I figured his father had fed him lies because he wants the Institute, and he wants to keep his children under his control.
~I thought Gabriel's reaction was pretty funny. I guess he never expected anyone to do him physical damage in the conversation, let alone Sophie, who's so timid and closed into herself. Though now that she's done that, who's to say that he'll come back to train Tessa.
~It would depend on Will's actions--you can tell what he does to keep people away by how awful he is to them, because he has a slight change in how he carries himself to speak. At least for me. Jem dying has always affected Will; since probably the first moment they met, because Will was willing to get close to Jem, since he was already dying.

  5. I was kind of shocked, but more surprised with the way Gideon reacted. The information we learned in this chapter was surprising even though we kind of knew they didn't get along

I love Sophies loyalty and the way she slapped him. He deserved it. Gideon finally realized that Sophie is not that timid and is brave. he finally sees her as more than a servant. i think

Will doesn't understand how what he did affected Jem but Tessa made him understand. i think that all he does is a cover up because jems illness is affecting him

  6. I think it's interesting about the Lightwoods' uncle...almost like foreshadowing Alec and Jace (before Magnus, of course)....

LOVED Sophie in this chapter. :D Gabriel needed to be slapped. I love how loyal Sophie is to Charlotte. At this point, I don't quite know how to take Gideon. Is this whole thing a good cop/bad cop ploy?

I really don't think WIll thought about how his taking the drug would affect Jem. I do think he's worried about Jem and is concerned about his health, especially now that Scott has pointed out that there might be a yin fen shortage. Yikes! Poor Jem.....

  7. I think that explains a lot about why the Lightwoods are sort of against Charlotte and her family. It was kinda shocking but it's got to be expected seeing as their families never got along really well.

Sophie is a really tough character. I didn't expect that from her but let me just say, if she's a Shadowhunter she'll be a real kick-ass. As for Gideon's reaction, I think now that he saw a feisty side to Sophie, he'll start seeing her more as someone strong who stands up for what she believes in. Although I do think Gideon never saw Sophie as someone who's just a maid gifted with the Sight from the start anyway.
Also, I think Gideon gets why Sophie did what she did. Gideon knows that his brother can often be insensitive to others feelings. Not to mention I think Gabriel needs to get some of it once in a while, hehe.

Will is very hard to understand and he doesn't want people to. I think he's got so much courage as a Shadowhunter but when it comes to dealing with his emotions and the people he cares about, he runs. I think he does the things he does 'cause he's also trying to protect himself from hurting. He doesn't want to care too much because he thinks this will cause him less pain. And it hurts him all the more that the one person he truly ever let in is dying and he can't do anything about it no matter how much he wants to.
Sometimes, Will is just so frustrating, ugh..

  8. I feel like Benedict is lying to his sons, or at least twisting the truth. Something about that story just doesn’t seem to feel right, like it’s missing a vital detail. So I’m not taking it at face value just yet. And I can’t help but wonder if Granville was Silas’s parabatai. That would cause drama, and the Clave doesn’t look upon that type of relationship very well, even in TMI. So I could see Silas killing himself out of shame. Back then, that probably happened more often than it should have. I don’t see Mrs. Lightwood dying of grief over that, but Shadowhunters do feel things more strongly than mundanes. I just think it is rather convenient that when Gideon spoke highly of Charlotte and the Institute that Benedict had this bit of information as a response. It just doesn’t sit right. There has to be more to the story than Benedict is letting on.

Sophie loves Charlotte and feels deep loyalty towards her than most servants would feel to their employers. I’m proud she did it. The way Gabriel was going, he needed a good slap to snap him out of it. Seriously, what is going on with everybody right now? They’ve all lost their minds! And Gideon is now seeking to court Miss Collins. That should make daddy proud. I think Gideon finds the whole blood feud matter to be nonsense. He seems far more forgiving than Gabriel, but I suppose Gabriel is being played like a fiddle by their father, using his wife and their mother as a tool. Gideon, at least, is unaffected. Or seems that way anyhow…I hope this isn’t a case of good cop, bad cop. I really want to like Gideon.

I think Will is just about as stressed out as anyone can be at the moment. I don’t know if anything—apart from acting like an arrogant idiot—is an act or not. He seemed genuinely ignorant of his actions affecting Jem, which is just stupid on his part. But maybe he was just suicidal, taking that drug, hoping to die with Jem in the same way as Jem. He’s really not handling things well these days. I just need everybody to get their heads on straight already.

Wooley Scott is an interesting character, isn’t he? Nice to see he has some history with Camille. He’s really verbose, and bubbly. And from what I can guess, this is probably just before the commencement of his Praetor idea. He did mention a portrait of himself dressed in Roman attire. I wonder…when does Magnus get his little box thing? Not to mention, this guy has been around awhile—form Clockwork Prince to City of Lost Souls. That’s a nice long lifetime.

  9. I think the only shocking thing was Silas' part falling for his parabati. Especially in those times he would have immense shame. What a sad story. Benedict of course has twisted things to suit himself and keep his family in the good light. I really feel for Charlotte after hearing some of these secrets.

Bravo, Sophie! Bravo! I may have shouts and cheered out loud when she slapped Gabriel. He did absolutely deserve it. He so blindly follows his father. He needed a reality check. Who could not love Charlotte? Gabriel's reaction was fabulous. He is the most mature of the two. And obviously he's seen more than Gabriel. He's either not fooled by his father, has seen more truths and realizes there is more to each side.

I have to agree with Jasmine- I want to like Gideon and wouldn't it be wonderful if he actually cared about Sophie, but can he really be trusted. Is he a wolf in sheep's clothing? I just don't trust him yet.

I loved Tessa lighting into Will. I too wish they could have continued that conversation. I really feel Will is much more affected by Jem's dying than he will ever let on. He has to be the strong one. Though it's obvious he has been struggling with it for some time. I think he feels he must be strong for everyone and that is a heavy burden, especially for one who blames himself for so much. BUT I think the only way everyone else will see it is by someone like Tessa calling him out when he behaves so badly. I don't feel he really saw how his escaping with the drug would have affected Jem. He just didn't think past getting out of his head.

  10. I remember thinking that that I kind of understood where the Lightwoods were coming from, at least the kids.. but I also thought that there is more to the story than meets the eye or that the Lightwoods know anyway..
Sophie was my very favorite part of that whole exchange, it was great to see how much she loves Charlotte and how she is always willing to stand for them.

As far as Tessa and Will... I totally understand why Tessa is so upset with him, but I really dont think that Will ever thought his actions would hurt his friend so much, and had he known I dont think he would have ever done it, he loves Jem and he would never hurt him on purpose.

The one aspect that scared me the most out of the whole conversation with Woolsey was not that Mortmain was recruiting wolves for god knows but that he is capable of buying up all the yin fen and creating a shortage knowing Jem depends on it, it almost gives him a bargaining chip IMO

  11. So this is the reason why the Lightwoods hates Charlotte. I'm sorry for her. This is not her fault but she is who lives with that.
Sophie is badass!!!!!!!!:D Sophie is so loyal and she loves Charlott so much and this is sweet. Maybe Sophie will be a Shandowhunter in the end. And Gideon's reaction was great. I think he thought that Gabriel deserve it.
Well, Will didn't think that Jem's will angry. But I loved that Tessa opened Will's eyes. I think Will care for everyone.

  12. * Everytime we find out information about Charlott's family it is because they have pissed somebody off. It explains why Benedict Lightwood is so hell bent on getting the institute from her but at the same time maybe Charlott's family is not as good as they think they are. Too many enemies cannot be a good thing.
*Sophie's reaction was priceless. Gabriel deserved it and I am glad it came from somebody that you wouldn't expect. Gideon knows what his brother is capable of and is not surprised that someone would react to it. Gideon also has feelings for Sophie so there is no way he was going to get mad at her.
*I am glad Tessa shed some light on how Will's action affect Jem but I think he knew already. Jem and Will have to have some understanding between them or Jem would always be angry with Will. Will cares but he is not going to show how much. I do believe the way he acts is always a cover up for his real feelings. Will cares deeply for Jem and would never do anyhting intentionally to hurt Jem but atleast Tessa could show Will a different way at looking at the situation.

  13. I feel sorry for Charlotte that she's already being judged on how she runs the institute by how her family was depicted by detractors. She's almost on her toes to prove herself worthy of running the institute - through Benedict Lightwood's eyes.

I think Benedict Lightwood knows things that he won't even tell his own sons, looked like he wanted to deceive everybody to believing that he is the good guy and that everything he says are believable and are the truth. I feel sorry for Gabriel, that his father's feeding his consciousness with the wrong things. with that, Gabriel's fighting with everything he's got just to prove that his father's right. I realized that if Benedict's telling the truth, shouldn't Gideon be on his side too?

Love Sophie for mustering enough courage to slap sense to Gabriel! girl power! what she did was the right thing. standing up for what she believed was right, and fought for her employer / friend that she cared for. sometimes people do crazy things to protect the people they love, even if it goes against their norms, and I think her courage made Gideon admire her more. Probably the moment Sophie slapped Gabriel, was the same time that Gideon was mentally slapped as well, to realize that Sophie's that kind of girl that he'd been looking for all along. I love the chemistry between the two. I loved how Gideon, this strong willed and no-nonsense guy would little by little fell in love with Sophie's humble and timid, yet strong, charms. I loved the way Gideon, despite of hating everything - about going back to their family, London, train beginners - gradually discovered that Sophie was the one reason to return to London that outweighed a thousand excuses to stay in Madrid. Sophie broke Gideon's wall of indifference towards the world, and made him hope for something to look forward to. Maybe Gideon is really a nice guy, its just that he hasn't found the right person to help him break out of his shell, until dear Sophie came along. I do hope Sophie will be a vital part of the Lightwood family tree.

It's really breaking my heart on Will and Tessa are with each other. Like they're walking on thin, broken glass, that if they take that wrong step would mean disaster! I love how Will loves Tessa in a way that he's loving her and telling her things in his head, and so hard not to blurt it out. Will Herondale is such a hopeless romantic when it comes to Tessa. It's as if he's wearing that smiling mask for Tessa, but in reality, he couldn't bear to be happy because of the burden he's been carrying. hope I can still take more of it in the next chapters to come...really hoping...

  14. CP Read A Long

Charlotte's father and Gabriel and Gideon's uncle were close friends but when it came to the law, Charlotte's father put away the friendship and put the law between them. Uncle Silas committed suicide and Mrs. Lightwood was so broken hearted she died of grief. Maybe there's more to the story that was unsaid. It's a family tragedy. Maybe Mr. Fairchild could of ignored the relationship, let Silas and his parabatai answer to their own mistakes and be punished for the infraction with breaking any friendship if they were caught. But like Gideon said, "the sins of the fathers should not be visited on the sons." But as Gabriel had said before that, "We have blood pride. Family pride."

Sophie was bold but she is also protective of Charlotte. Sophie may be a servant, but she loves Charlotte and has a lot of respect for her. Anyone insulting Charlotte deserves a slap from Sophie. Yeh, I thought Gabriel might react but he's a guy and a good thing he has self control and doesn't hit ladies, even though she's a servant. But he may have known he was out if line when he spoke of Charlotte and her family that way but still he didn't regret what he had said. Because Gideon has a soft heart for Sophie and Gideon doesn't seem to have any control or way of getting through to Gabriel and his lil misfits, Gideon prob felt that Gabriel deserved it and had it coming.

Will probably does understand what Tessa is saying but probably not as well. Probably because as we can see, Will doesn't really explain much, he has his own reasons wether anyone could understand him or not. And that he knows Jem knows and understand him enough to not question his motives or any unexplained actions. Probably not as well because he didn't think Jem would see it that way, that there's not another motive for his dealing w the drug. But then We don't get Jem's POV like Tessa's, Will's and Sophie's so we are hanging out on a limb when something goes unspoken.
Wills drugged self and his smart mouth are always for show. But what he does and how he feels are ALWAYS sincere wether others think so or not. I agree, that act last night was for show. Will isn't a book to be read, so he's not gonna spill on anything he does. Will is hurting inside and Jem doesn't know how much it is hurting him. He can't show it and worry Jem. He knows Jem will understand him. Or Jem will never let Will out of his sight and let him go and do as he pleases. Will and Jem love each other to not want to burden or worry each other. Will's curse, his family, Jem and now Tessa.. You would think he'd go crazy by now but he's an awesome guy--that Will-- for holding it all in and together.
