17 & GONE Blog Tour by Nova Ren Suma: Guest Post

Welcome to Penguin Teen's 17 & GONE blog tour stop #1! I'm thrilled to have author Nova Ren Suma on the blog today to talk about her upcoming YA release, and the inspiration behind her 17 & GONE inspiration board. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to click on the link below to go check it out.

Guest post by Nova Ren Suma

Last year, when I was deep into writing 17 & Gone, I discovered an exciting new distraction and way to collect images that fascinated me: Pinterest. What started off as maybe one more thing to keep me from writing turned into a great source of inspiration, and my 17 & Gone inspiration board was born. I’d often write with the images up on my screen, staring at them in pauses between paragraphs. On each stop on this blog tour I’m highlighting one of the photos that spoke to me and helped me find my way through the darkness of writing this book.

Today’s image is a piece of street photography by an artist who calls himself MisterKey. I didn’t know anything about the image when I first saw it (where it was taken; who of). It was the reaching hand that bothered me. It bothered me so much, I had to write about it.

Another girl could go today. She could be pulling her scarf tight around her face to protect it from the cold, searching through her coat pockets for her car keys so they’re out and ready when she reaches her car in the dark lot. She could glance in through the bright, blazing windows of the nearest restaurant as she hurries past. And then when she’s out of sight the shadowy hands could grab her, the sidewalk could gulp her up.

—from 17 & Gone, page 2

There was something about the idea of shadows coming to claim someone, the simple thought of a girl crossing a parking lot and never making it to the other side, that haunted me.

In fact, I discover now only after doing some research to find the source of this photograph, this image was taken in Budapest, far from the parking lot I imagined in a made-up town in the Hudson Valley area of upstate New York. But the place itself doesn’t much matter, does it? It’s the sinister feeling. The way you want to shout at her to run, worried she won’t escape. So much of that made its way into the novel.

For spotlights on more images from my 17 & Gone inspiration board on Pinterest, keep following this blog tour!

About The Book:

Seventeen-year-old Lauren is having visions of girls who have gone missing. And all these girls have just one thing in common—they are 17 and gone without a trace. As Lauren struggles to shake these waking nightmares, impossible questions demand urgent answers: Why are the girls speaking to Lauren? How can she help them? And . . . is she next? As Lauren searches for clues, everything begins to unravel, and when a brush with death lands her in the hospital, a shocking truth emerges, changing everything.

More Shadowhunter Tarot Cards & A Tarot Card Q&A w/ Cassie

I can not get enough of Cassie Clare's and Cassandra Jean's Shadowhunter Tarot Cards! I can not wait to get my hands on the entire set. Yesterday Cassie not only posted a few more cards for us to see, she also posted a Q&A about the cards. I've linked to each of the posts below, as well as posted exactly what she did.

I LOVE this one:

“will there be a jace and clary shadowhunter tarot? just the two of them? :) — jacefrayed”
Well, I can’t always say “ask and ye shall receive” because some cards from CJ’sShadowhunter Tarot don’t exist. This one does, though! Clary and Jace in the scene from City of Glass where they sleep in the same bed but don’t touch except for their hands. The Eight of Wands/Steles, which can mean headlong progression. I liked it because I felt like this was the moment in which they fell in love, that there was no going back from.

This one

“Hi Cassie! I was wondering if you/Cassandra Jean were going to do a tarot card for Luke perhaps? — voldemortsdead”
Ask and ye shall receive.
Also how cute is our Luke? So cute.

“Hi! Cassie, I was wondering when you posted the Clace Tarot early today you said that, that was the moment Jace and Clary fell in love so I was thinking (and want to know) when Tessa realised she is in love with Will, same goes for Will and Jem… if you answer thank you so much! — smileforparis”
Ask me again after Clockwork Princess comes out. :)
“I keep looking back and forth from my tumblr to my homework and tumblr just keeps winning :P is there Perhaps a Cecily tarot card? — thedecentintohelliseasy”
There is! Some of the cards are spoilery. I’m holding them back until after Princess comes out.
“Hello Cassandra (: I was wondering if there are actually going to be 78 shadowhunter tarot cards? It seems like that is a lot of work (not that I’m complaining tho). — itssimplylavie”
Yep, we’re doing the WHOLE thing.
“Hi Cassie, Was wondering if there was a tarot card for Tessa and Jem? Or Tessa and Will? -aliangel1121 — aliangel1121”
The Will and Tessa card was posted. (Yes, they’re not kissing or anything, but reading is just as heartfelt for those two!)
The Tessa and Jem one is a spoiler.
“Now I have a question, and my apologies if this has been asked before: will any of the characters in The Infernal Devices make a “significant” appearance in City of Heavenly Fire and The Dark Artifices? Also, will reading the family tree in Clockwork Princess first be spoilery? I hope you are able to reply, and thanks again for creating such beautiful works of art! — sylvialy112”
*composes self*
People ask often if the characters from Infernal will appear in CoHF or TDA. I can say one character from Infernal (other than Magnus) appears in CoHF, and yes, again, a character from Infernal appears in TDA. I can’t say more than that.
Hello Cassandra, I was wondering… Clockwork Princess comes out on the 19th of March, so does that mean it comes out in Australia on the 20th because of the time difference? — melbourneblah18”
I, uh – oh, math. It will come out on the 19th wherever and whenever that is wherever you are, in English. I don’t know anything else, and definitely don’t know foreign non-English release dates. No clue.
“Hey Cassie. I’m keeping a very close eye on the tarot. I’m really looking forward to ones with Jonathan (Sebastian) and Maureen. Can’t wait for the deck to grow. — tsvetuschayaroza”

Maureen’s card is AWESOME. I’m holding it for a later date.
“Hi Cassie. I really love the Shadowhunter Tarot deck! Do you/Cassandra Jean have Maia in the tarot card deck too? — mind-fangs”
Yep! Not all the cards are drawn, but Maia is in the deck more than once. Here’s one. The moon card. (I’m not sure this one is final. A lot of me just wants to give the whole card to Maia and give Jordan a different card.)

Hey! When the movie comes out, you should try to release the cards that you’ve been uploading the pictures of. I would totally buy them! And even if it doesn’t get released, I’ll just make them myself! They are amazing :) I fell in love with your books, I can’t believe heavenly fire doesn’t come out for a year - but the wait is worth it! — izmagine”
“I LOVE the Shadowhunter tarot cards!!!! Do you and Cassandra Jean have any plan to sell them in packs? They are the most gorgeous things I have ever seen!!!! — dreadpage511
will we be able to buy these tarot cards??? I love your books and these cards are so amazing! — unravel—ing
Currently I don’t own the rights to publish the tarot card deck. Those rights have to be released to me, and then I hope I can publish them and have them sold online so everyone who wants one can get one easily and cheaply. Fingers crossed.
“Clockwork Princess was amazing. It was beautiful. I love you. Thank you.” –(redactedsonoonechasesherforspoilers)
Well, if they’re going to break the embargo, I’m glad they broke it for someone who loved it. ;)
