Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders

Talk about an action packed, thrilling, debut! Amy Tintera has given the YA fandom a whole new book to devour. This debut is seriously AWESOME! REBOOT is one of those fast paced, highly addicting books that once you sit to read it there is no putting the book down until you're down with it.

Set in a futuristic TX (Welcome to TX y'all), is a whole new civilization that is reborn or as you'd call them in this book, "rebooted". Meaning there are those who where once normal human beings that have now been genetically enhanced, changed, and are barely human, some not at all. They like people, function the same as humans do, except they're more powerful, stronger, and lack the emotions humans have. One of the things I liked about the characters in this book, is what they bring to the story, and what they do for each other. In a world that seems hopeless, they offer each other just that.

The main character, Wren, also known as #178 is one tough heroine. It wasn't hard for me to like her right off the bat. She's fearless, trained, and unstoppable. She only person she's let in is her best friend Ever. Though Wren is a full fledge Reboot, I found it interesting that Wren still has her scars from when she was human. Once a reboot, any injury can be healed, and I liked the symbolism that Wren's human scars have on her reboot form. They're very much apart of who she is, and I felt they also made her more human. Even though she tries to hide them, her insecurities about them are what make her more human.

Can we talk about this oh so fabulous romance? Oh yes, in the midst of an action fueled story line is this romance that left me breathless. I LOVE it when authors create these stark settings, and plot lines, but throw in a romance that adds light, and hope to the story. That's what #22, also known as Callum does for Wren. He gives her light, and hope. I love the way she slowly but surely breaks down the walls around Wren's heart. Oh should I say makes her feel things that she's not felt in a very long time. You know what else is great about their relationship? They fact that they're total opposites. From the moment Callum was introduced into the book, I loved him. Where Wren is tough, a trained solider, and doesn't hesitate to take a person out, Callum hesitates, has emotion and fights against being turned into what Wren is. As the storyline continues, I loved what both Wren and Callum offer each other, and give one another. They both grow and change in different ways, and their chemistry is FABULOUS!

REBOOT's writing is AWESOME! Amy's writing is crisp, refreshing, and fabulous. I'm shocked this her debut book, because of how solid her writing is. She delivers one heck of a punch with REBOOT. The dystopian feeling, the TX setting, the characters, and the story line were all so well crafted. I'm looking forward to reading many more books from Amy.

If you're looking for a fast paced, thrilling, action packed book that has the perfect kind of romance, then I highly recommend picking up REBOOT!

More The Dark Artifices Artwork by Cassandra Jean

The Dark Artifices surprises are rolling in! If the Shadowhunters in Season: Summer post and The Dark Artifices: A Campion Trilogy posts weren't enough, check out the new The Dark Artifices character post Cassie shared of Cassandra Jean's artwork!

Cassandra Jean and I actually shopped for all the swimsuits for the characters. Mostly at modcloth. We did stop short of actually buying them.
Hola, Jaime. :) Here’s a closeup of him from one of the later tarot cards, just a sneak peek!

THE DARK ARTIFICES new character alert: Jaime (artwork by Cassandra Jean)
[ Megan, you’re so attentive ;-) ]

I love that the Cassie and Cassandra shopped for the characters swim suits! Which by the way, I love their swim suits and how they all coordinate. Also, I'm loving the name Jamie. I wonder if a certain person named Jamie inspired this character name.

The cycle hit the beach and spun out. Emma went into a rolling crouch as she flew free of it, keeping her elbows in, pushing the air hard out of her lungs. She turned her head as she hit the sand, slapping her palms down to roll herself forward, absorbing the impact of the fall through her arms and shoulders, her knees folding up into her chest. The stars wheeled crazily overhead as she spun, sucking in her breath as her body slowed its rolling. She  came to a stop on her back, her hair and clothes full of sand and her ears full of the sound of the wildly crashing ocean….

Los Angeles, 2012. It’s been five years since the events of the Mortal Instruments when Nephilim stood poised on the brink of oblivion and Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs lost her parents. After the blood and violence she witnessed as a child, Emma has dedicated her life to the eradication of demons and being the best, fastest and deadliest teen Shadowhunter since Jace Lightwood. Raised in the Los Angeles Institute, Emma is paired as a parabatai with her best friend, Julian. As Emma hunts those who caused the death of her parents, the trail they’re following leads back to those they’ve always been taught to trust. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.

The first book of the Dark Artifices, Lady Midnight will be published in 2015. There will be three books in total: Lady Midnight, The Prince of Shadows, and The Queen of Air and Darkness.

    Shadowhunter in Seasons: Summer

The Dark Artifices of summer by Cassandra Jean. From left Christina, Jaime, Julian, Emma, Drusilla, Tavvy, Tiberius, Livvy and Mark.

Cassie treated Shadowhunters fans to our last Shadowhunters in Seasons yesterday evening with characters of The Dark Artifices characters being front in center on this picture. Here's what Cassie said about this image:

Taking  a break briefly from the tarot card project, I asked Cassandra Jean to draw the four seasons as the four Shadowhunter series I have either written or planned right now — The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, the Dark Artifices, and The Mysterious TLH.
Here The Dark Artifices takes the season of summer at, where else, Zuma Beach in LA. From left: Cristina, Jaime, Julian, Emma, Drusilla, Tavvy, Livvy, Tiberius, and Mark. All Blackthorns but three.
*claps hands* I’m so excited to write a Shadowhunter series set in my hometown of Los Angeles…oh, and check out the new Dark Artifices page on my website with a little snippet from Lady Midnight.

If you missed the other three season pictures, check out Fall, Winter and Summer here.
