Breaking TMI News: The Mortal Instruments is Coming to TV!

The Hollywood Reporter has announced that "Helix" show runner Ed Decter will develop Cassandra Clare's YA fantasy franchise for the small screen. That's right, The Mortal Instruments is coming to TV!!

Per The Hollywood Reporter:

After stalling at the box office, The Mortal Instruments is coming back. As a television series.
Constantin Film, the production company that controls the rights to Cassandra Clare's best-selling YA fantasy franchise and which produced The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film, is relaunching Mortal Instruments as a high-end drama series.
Constantin has hired Ed Decter, whose writer-producer credits include HelixUnforgettableIn Plain Sight and The Client List, as the showrunner for the Mortal Instruments series. The project is currently in development, with Constantin planning to begin production next year. No broadcast partners are yet attached to the series.
Constantin had originally planned to turn Clare's fantasy series into a feature film franchise but shelved that idea after the first Mortal Instruments film, starring Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, tanked at the box office, earning just $31 million domestically. Constantin, however, insisted it had not abandoned the franchise and planned to return to Mortal Instruments.
“It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told THR. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we'll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”
I personally think this is great! I feel by making this a TV series, they'll have the chance to rectify what they did wrong, and make the story right. They'll also have the chance to develop characters more than they can in a movie. I like that they can spread the story out over a duration of time, vs trying to cram it into a two hour movie. I'm anxious to see what they're going to do. I think there is a lot of potential for making a great series here. Read more of the article HERE.

What do you guys think? Are you excited? Will you watch it?

  1. I personally am ecstatic about this. I've been waiting for The Mortal Instrument adaptation news since they first stalled City of Ashes. I hope they keep Jamie because I did love him as Jace. I felt that he captured him well, same with Robert as Simon. I only had one problem with the casting of the film and that was Magnus. He just didn't give off that flamboyant nature I wanted. He wasn't a convincing enough actor for me.

I am excited to hear more as they begin production for this. I will definitely be tuning in!

  2. I'm up for it! :)
But I do think it's pretty safe to assume that Clary, Jace and Simon will all be recast. I do not see Jamie, Robert or Lily returning to TV.

  3. So glad they are finally fixing things. This is the only movie I ever watched that pissed me off cause I didn't have a time machine and couldn't go back to stop them from ruining it.
