POISON STUDY by Maria V. Snyder / 10th Anniversary Read Along, Chapters 1-8

Welcome to this week's Poison Study read along post. Today we're talking about chapters 1-8. Don't miss my upcoming Poison Study blog tour post! Maria will be stopping by Mundie Moms to share Valek's tasting notes, here. Don't miss Maria's post she's sharing on her Facebook page here.

Chapters 1-8

I am so excited to be re-reading one of my all time favorite series! Back before Mundie Moms was created, and I was just starting to reading YA, really back before I even picked up Twilight, I picked up this book. I absolutely loved it. Before there was Edward, or Jace, or any of the other fabulous characters I've fallen in love with, there was Valek! Before Katniss, or Clary or any other female characters I've loved getting to know, there was Yelena.

Yelena is one of those awesome characters I seriously love! I admire her strength, her courage, her wit and her smarts. She encompasses everything I look for in a heroine. Most importantly, Yelena is a character who does not shy away from who she is, regardless of her circumstances. I know some of you may be meeting her for the first time, so I won't say anymore. Based on the first couple chapters, we know she's brave character, who's life was just spared by Valek, and accepting the job as the Commander's food taster. I'm looking forward to finding out more about her back story. It certainly doesn't sound like a pretty one.

As I mentioned above, I love Valek, but for the sake of today's conversation, I'll just stick with talking about from these first few chapters. What we get to see from him in these first few chapters gives me the impression that only is he someone you don't mess with, he's loyal, and someone Yelena will hopefully be able to trust. He's definitely a fierce fighter, and cunning in the way he protected her, and made it know she's their food tester now, not a prisoner. I'm looking forward to seeing what changes between the two of them, now that Yelena has been moved into Valek's suite for her safety. Character wise, I liked meeting Rand, but I'm on the fence about Margg.

Let me know what you thought of these chapters. Have you read this book before? Leave a comment with a link to your post.

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear. . . .
