Celebrate Roald Dahl's Birthday This Weekend At An Eatery Near You!



The Roald Dahl birthday celebrations are getting sweeter! Continuing with the celebration of what would have been Roald Dahl's 100th birthday yesterday, The Roald Dahl Literary Estate is partnering with various eateries about the US to celebrate! There will be treats, games, prizes and more! Thank you to Penguin, I've got a list of all the events, and where they'll be happening THIS WEEKEND! Check out all the details below:

The Roald Dahl Literary Estate has partnered with a number of eateries and bakeries around the country to help organize celebrations for Roald Dahl's birthday! During the month of September and Wondercrump Weekend--THIS WEEKEND! the weekend of Roald Dahl's birthday-- September 17th and 18th, various bookstores, bakeries and creameries are banding together to honor Roald Dahl. They will be selling treats inspired by his most popular stories, organizing activities and readings from popular YA and middle grade authors, and hosting splendiferous parties in celebration!

Here is a list of events happening around the country, during the month of September:


BOSTON
*Union Square Doughnuts - At two Union Square Doughnut locations, there will be a Fantastic Mr. Fox inspired doughnut, an apple and bacon fritter with a cider glaze inspired by the three villains in the classic novel. 

*Flour Bakery and Cafe - At four separate locations, Flour Bakery and Cafe will be selling ""Hornets Stewed in Tar" (chocolate caramel with almonds and cacao nibs) inspired by James and the Giant Peach. 

NEW YORK:
*Doughnut Plant - At four locations across New York City, Doughnut Plant will be featuring a James and the Giant Peach inspired doughnut: mini peach doughnuts with magic green crystals. 

*Baked NYC- Baked's two New York City locations (Tribeca and Red Hook) will feature a Matilda inspired cupcake,  Miss Honey's Raspberry Jam-infused vanilla cupcake with semi-sweet chocolate buttercream topped with chocolate flakes from Miss Honey's chocolate box.

SAN FRANCISCO:

In honor of Roald Dahl 100, Craftsman and Wolves will be featuring a Matilda inspired cake (named after Bruge Bogtrotter, the character whom Ms. Trunchbull forced to eat chocolate cake after chocolate cake as punishment for stealing a piece from her) , rich devil’s food cake, salted caramel ganache, gold leaf sprinkles. Go to any of their four locations to try one!

AUSTIN:
*Voodoo Doughnut V – 212 E 6th St, Austin, TX – Friday Sept. 16-Sunday Sept. 18 – 11AM-4PM Daily—Iconic Voodoo Doughnut V is hosting a weekend-long party filled with doughnut contests, children dressing up as Roald Dahl characters, crafts, readings from Billy Taylor (Thieving Weasels), Book People pop-up (10% of sales going to Partners in Health), and more.

PORTLAND:
*Voodoo Doughnut Too – 1501 NE Davis St, Portland, OR – Friday, Sept. 16 – 11AM-4PM—Voodoo Doughnut Too will have dress up contests for children, giveaways, Green Bean Books pop-up (10% of sales going to Partners in Health), Roald Dahl crafts, and readings from Ingrid Law (Savvy).

DENVER:
*Tattered Cover Book Store– 2526 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO – Saturday Sept. 17 – 1-3PM—One of the largest independent bookstores in the US, Tattered Cover will have Roald Dahl-themed crafts, activities, Voodoo Doughnuts, and giveaways. In partnership with Alamo Drafthouse, there will be a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory screening at 11.30AM.

NEW YORK:
*Ample Hills – 305 Nevins St, Brooklyn, NY – Saturday Sept. 17 – 12-4PM—Also participating in Wondercrump Weekend! One of New York’s most popular ice creameries, Ample Hills will have a free sundae bar, Dream Jar game, dress-up and crafts corners, and readings from Mara Wilson (star of the movie Matilda and debut author of Where Am I Now?), Paul Griffin (When Friendship Followed Me Home), Abby Hanlon (Ralph Tells a Story), and John Marciano Bemelmans (the Madeline series). A portion of the proceeds of all the Dahlicious Delights is going to Partners in Health (www.pih.org). Partners in Health, co-founded by Ophelia Dahl, Roald Dahl’s daughter, brings high-quality health care to poor communities around the world.

2:00pm Celebrating 100 years Roald Dahl: Roald Dahl Villainous Villains. Who is the most villainous villain of all? A panel debate featuring The Twits, the Grand High Witch, The Giants and Miss Trunchbull featuring Adam Gidwitz, Soman Chainani, Cassie Beasley, and Melissa Grey and moderated by Aaron Hicklin. Who gets your vote?

*Brooklyn Public Library – 10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, NY – Sunday, Sept. 18 – 1.30-4PM—One of the city’s foremost cultural and educational institutions, the Library is celebrating the works of Roald Dahl with readings by Michelle Schusterman (I Heart Band), Tim Miller (Snappsy the Alligator), Cassie Beasley (Circus Mirandus), Adam Gidwitz (The Inquisitor’s Tale), a Roald Dahl trivia contest, a screening of Matilda, games and crafts, and treats by Baked Ideas and Four & Twenty Blackbirds.

 
LOS ANGELES:
*Knuckle & Claw – 2715 Main St, Santa Monica, CA – Sunday, Sept. 18 – 3-5PM—Roald Dahl’s granddaughter, Chloe, shares his passion for food and has two restaurants with her partner. Chloe’s mother and Roald Dahl’s daughter, Lucy, will be reading with Sherri Smith (Flygirl) and Keith Campbell (Flora and Ulysses), along with activities, games, and a filming of a Cupcake Wars episode.

 *Milk Jar Cookies – 5466 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA – Sunday, Sept. 18 – 12-5PM—This delightfully homey gourmet cookie shop will be transformed into a party space complete with face painting, a magician, a poet, and Roald Dahl-inspired crafts and activities!

 *The Pie Hole Los Angeles and Coolhaus – 59 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA – Saturday, Sept. 17 – 12-4PM—Two of LA’s most popular dessert companies are joining forces for Wondercrump Weekend. The party will feature their Dahlicious Delights treats, a dress up competition for children, crafts, and readings by Aditi Khorana (Mirror in the Sky) and Romina Russell (Zodiac series).

BOSTON:
*J.P. Licks – all locations, Boston, MA – Saturday, Sept. 17 – 1-4PM—One of Boston’s most well-loved ice creameries, there will be crafts, samples, and competitions at all 13 of J. P. Licks’ locations.

Today marks the 100th birthday of beloved children's author, Roald Dahl. To celebrate, the book world has proclaimed today, Roald Dahl Day! Roald Dahl's books are timeless, classics that we grew up loving, and have enjoyed reading with our own children.
