FLAME IN THE MIST by Renee Ahdieh / Blog Tour: Author Interview & Giveaway #FlameInTheMist

Welcome to the next stop in the FLAME IN THE MIST blog tour, hosted by Penguin Teen. I am beyond thrilled to have author, Renee Ahdieh stop by Mundie Moms today. I absolutely love the way Renee writes her books, and Flame In The Mist is SOOO good. Today she answers a few of my spoiler free questions about it. After you read my interview with her, check out the giveaway and read more about her new release, below.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

What's one thing you learned about yourself throughout the process of writing this book?

I learned that my best writing is writing that flows naturally. If I’m forcing it, then I need to take a step back and return to the last place the work was organic.

What came first with this book, a scene, a character or a line from the story?

I love this question! I would absolutely say the character of Mariko came first. I always start with character.

I love the strong female characters you write. What is one thing you admire about Mariko?

I love her flaws. To me, flawed characters are the most fun to write because I find them to be the most real. Mariko is smart, but she overthinks situation, and it can be to her own detriment.

How would you describe FLAME IN THE MIST in 5 words or less?

Sexy. Genderbending. Samurai. Innovative. Mysterious.

Which character would your teen-self have been friends with?

Definitely Ranmaru.

What's harder to write & what is the most fun to write: the characters, the setting, or the elements that make up the story?

The hardest thing for me to write is the beginning. And I have the most fun with my characters!

Favorite thing to do when you're not writing?

Eating or cooking something to eat.

Where can readers catch you on tour next?

I’ll be at Red Balloon Books in St. Paul on 5/23, and then I’ll be at Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill on 5/24!

The daughter of a prominent samurai, Mariko has long known her place—she may be an accomplished alchemist, whose cunning rivals that of her brother Kenshin, but because she is not a boy, her future has always been out of her hands. At just seventeen years old, Mariko is promised to Minamoto Raiden, the son of the emperor's favorite consort—a political marriage that will elevate her family's standing. But en route to the imperial city of Inako, Mariko narrowly escapes a bloody ambush by a dangerous gang of bandits known as the Black Clan, who she learns has been hired to kill her before she reaches the palace.

Dressed as a peasant boy, Mariko sets out to infiltrate the ranks of the Black Clan, determined to track down the person responsible for the target on her back. But she's quickly captured and taken to the Black Clan’s secret hideout, where she meets their leader, the rebel ronin Takeda Ranmaru, and his second-in-command, his best friend Okami. Still believing her to be a boy, Ranmaru and Okami eventually warm to Mariko, impressed by her intellect and ingenuity. As Mariko gets closer to the Black Clan, she uncovers a dark history of secrets, of betrayal and murder, which will force her to question everything she's ever known.
