    Rating: 5 stars

A young adult biography of Frankenstein's profound young author, Mary Shelley, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of its publication, told through free verse and 300+ full-bleed illustrations.

Mary Shelley first began penning Frankenstein as part of a dare to write a ghost story, but the seeds of that story were planted long before that night. Mary, just nineteen years old at the time, had been living on her own for three years and had already lost a baby days after birth. She was deeply in love with famed poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, a mad man who both enthralled and terrified her, and her relationship with him was rife with scandal and ridicule. But rather than let it crush her, Mary fueled her grief, pain, and passion into a book that the world has still not forgotten 200 years later.

Dark, intense, and beautiful, this free-verse novel with over 300 pages of gorgeous black-and-white watercolor illustrations is a unique and unforgettable depiction of one of the greatest authors of all time.

This is a heartbreaking, hauntingly well written story that will stay with you long after you read it. I've always been fascinated by Mary Shelley's story, but never have I felt so much emotion towards her, and all that she not only endured, but the treatment of her (which was common and the norm during her time period). I wasn't excepting this dark, intense read to emotional grip me like it did. Between Lita's writing, and the illustrations, the emotions, and the mood are captured well within this book's pages.

Happy Friday Shadowhunter fans! Have you seen the newest Shadowhunter / fairytale mashup from Cassandra Jean? This one features our favorite Shadowhunters, WILL and JEM! Here's what Cassie shared about it in her newsletter last week:

Check out Cassandra Jean’s interpretation of Will and Jem as the Brothers Grimm! The art for the preorder booklet is all complete and off to the printer, but Cassandra Jean still has a few Shadowhunter/fairytale mashups up her sleeve!

For some reason I found this oddly fitting for Will and Jem.

Exclusive Excerpt from Queen of Air and Darkness

Reluctantly Cristina followed as they pushed swiftly through the crowd. The air was full of sweet, harsh smoke, mixing with the mist from the occasional pool of water.

“Prince Kieran.” A faerie woman with hair like a dandelion clock drifted up to them. She wore a dress of white filaments, and her eyes were green as stems. “You come to us in disguise.”

Mark’s hand had gone to his weapons belt, but Kieran made a quick settling gesture at him. “I can trust you to keep my secret, can I not?”

“If you tell me why an Unseelie Prince would come hidden to his own brother’s revel, perhaps,” said the woman, her green eyes keen.

“I seek a friend,” Kieran said.

The woman’s eyes darted over Cristina and then Mark. Her mouth widened into a smile. “You seem to have several.”

“That’s enough,” said Mark. “The prince would proceed unhindered.”

“Now, if it were a love potion you sought, you might come to me,” said the faerie woman, ignoring Mark. “But which of these two Nephilim do you love? And which loves you?”

Kieran raised a warning hand. “Enough.”

“Ah, I see, I see.” Cristina wondered what it was she saw. “No love potion could assist with this.” Her eyes danced.

“Enough, I said!” Kieran flushed. “What would it take to end this bedevilment?”

THE WICKED ONES by Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman / Audio/Book Review #TheWickedOnes #shadowhunters #GOTSM

By: Cassandra Clare and Robin Wasserman
    Narrated by: Emily Bett Rickards
Published by: Shadowmarket Enterprises / Simon and Schuster Audio
    Released on: September 11, 2018
Series: Ghosts of the Shadow Market #6
    Purchase from: Audible | Amazon| B&N |

Rating: 5 Stars - LOVED IT!

Celine Montclaire goes to the Shadow Market to escape. She would go anywhere in Paris, or the entire world, to escape the suffering she experiences at the hands of her family. She did not expect to meet Valentine Morgenstern there, or to have him promise her freedom and the heart of the man she secretly loves. On one condition, of course. At the Shadow Market, nothing is for free.

I can't even begin to write a review of this because I just want to shout out loud -- ROBIN! CASSIE! What have you done?!?!?

What they've done is given us the story of Jace's mother, Celine. It was such an unexpected story. I didn't think we'd ever get to hear about her. And what we find out about her is something so very surprising. Her cruel childhood, her crush on a certain person and her dealings with Valentine.

Once again, as in almost all the stories in this anthology, the story tugs at your heart strings. Celine's unrequited (or is it?) crush pulls you into that corner of teenage obsession that only makes sense when you're young and crushing on someone who you idealize. The hopefulness, the dreams of what could be and the slow realization of what you would need to do to get noticed is all entangled with a bigger story of locating a lost Herondale.

Then there is Valentine. Big Bad Daddy (okay not, yet, in this story) Valentine. He is charming, menacing and manipulative. You've got to love a baddy like that.

Somehow in short amount of pages (minutes, because I listened to the audiobook), Cassie and Robin get in a story that could easily be stretched into its own novel. Boy oh boy, am I loving these stories. Yes, Jem is in there, too. Of course, he is. And his lovely, layered, melancholy character breaks my lil' ol' Mundie Mama's heart every time he's on the page.

I, also, want to mention the narrator, Emily Bett Rickards, who does a wonderful job as the naive, hopeful, beaten-down Celine and then turns around and gives us Valentine in all his treacherous glory. That's a 180-degree swing that in the short amount of minutes most actors couldn't do, but she presents them all beautifully.

Are you reading or listening to these stories? I need someone to discuss them with asap!
