BENEATH THE HAUNTING SEA by Joanna Ruth Meyer / Blog Tour: Author Interview #BeneathTheHauntingSea

Happy release day to Joanna Ruth Meyer's debut, Beneath the Haunting Sea! I'm thrilled to have Joanna on the blog today to celebrate the release of her YA fantasy. It was my pleasure to work with her and help her reveal this stunning cover a few months ago. Check it out here and read an except from her book. Today's stop features an interview with Joanna as well as some fun facts to get to know her more. First, about the book.

Can't you hear it, Talia?
Can't you hear the waves singing?

Sixteen-year-old Talia was born to a life of certainty and luxury, destined to become Empress of half the world. But when an ambitious rival seizes power, she and her mother are banished to a nowhere province on the far edge of the Northern Sea.

It is here, in the drafty halls of the Ruen-Dahr, that Talia discovers family secrets, a melancholy boy with a troubling vision of her future, and a relic that holds the power of an ancient Star. On these shores, the eerie melody of the sea is stronger than ever, revealing long-forgotten tales of the Goddess Rahn. The more dark truths that Talia unravels about the gods' history--and her own--the more the waves call to her, and it may be her destiny to answer.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

If you could include one of your favorite fictional characters (books, tv, movies etc), into your book, who would you choose and why?
Eugenides from the Queen’s Thief series because he’s sneaky and brilliant and I think him and Wen would be BFFs. Talia probably wouldn’t appreciate his sarcasm!

Do you have a favorite line from the book you can share with us?
My favorite line has been with me from the very first draft:

“To Love is to be broken. That is the very definition of the word.”

Which character surprised you the most in terms of how they changed from rough draft to final edits?
Talia definitely had the biggest character makeover—she morphed from an overly-melodramatic girl who cried on every single page (no joke!!), to a fiercely determined young woman who has the courage to change her mind, and isn’t afraid to stand up to fate. Talia’s transformation was one of the most difficult revision challenges—it was difficult to continue to see things through her eyes when her personality kept changing!

Which character would you have been friends in high school?
Definitely Wen and Ayah—musicians and book nerds have to stick together!!

What books are currently on your nightstand?
ARCs! I just finished an ARC of Nothing But Sky, by Amy Trueblood (it was fantastic!) and I’m in the middle of an ARC of Beyond A Darkened Shore by Jessica Leake (it’s super epic!).
