Clockwork Angel Read Along Day 11: Chapter 10 Pale Kings & Princes

It's day 11 of our Clockwork Angel Read Along! Please be sure to visit our link here for our schedule, guidelines and to fill out the form to be entered to win some fabulous prizes. Feel free to answer any number of the questions asked. You don't need to answer all of them if you don't wish to.

Today we're discussing chapter 10. Tess and Will attend the party, MANGUS is finally introduced (yay), we learn more about the automatons and what of Nate.

* Out of curiosity, do you think Will and Tessa discussing A Tale of Two Cities is foreshadowing what their relationship will end up like? I couldn't help thinking that, especially when Will says, "Yes,"... "He loved her enough to know she was better off without him."

* Magnus!!! The first time I read CA I may have squeeled a bit when Magnus is finally introduced to the story. I adore the charming Victorian era Magnus, as much as I do the TMI Magnus. Not taking the TMI book into consideration here, were you a bit surprised to learn that Camille and Magnus may have had a relationship? Do you think Magnus will be that certain someone who can help Tessa with her ability and figure out exactly what she is?

  1. The first time I read CA I didn't think anything of Will and Tessa's discussion of A Tale of Two Cities. But when I reread this chapter I started to think that maybe the discussion foreshadows what will happen between the two. Will doesn't seem to be the type to let many people get close to him and I think that if he feels that he's not good enough for Tessa (because of his secret or whatever his reasons) he will stay away from her.

The first time I read CA I was surprised to learn that Magnus was in a relationship with Camille but only because I had just finished reading CoG and couldn't picture Magnus with anyone but Alec. I'm hoping that Magnus will be very instrumental in helping Tessa figure out what she really is because I love his character and want to see more of him.

  2. * I felt a little bit of 'tension' in the moment when they were discussing about A Tale of Two Cities, because it makes you feel that Will wants to tell Tessa something important but the conversation ends up suddently, so I guess we'll have to wait to know if it has relation with that story.

    * I loved Magnus, he's the same sarcastic and funny as in TMI. When I lay down on the table I was like, OK, this is totally Magnus' style. I love this character in the Victorian Era and in now a days. I think that it makes sense that Magnus can help Tessa with her abiliy, I didn't think about it before. :)

  3. *When I read this I don't think I really put much thought into their discussion, but it seems that maybe he thinks he's not good enough for her. Maybe whatever happened in his past he thinks he's not good enough for anyone. I don't know I guess time will tell.

*When we meet Magnus I am thrilled. Being that I had already met him in TMI I love him. I think that he will end up being very useful. I think he knows much more about Tessa than it seems.

  4. The first read through, I didn't really think anything of the Tale of two cities reference but on this second read I think it holds a significance as to Will's thoughts/reaction towards tessa and what their relationship could be.

I think Magnus will be a kind of mentor to Tessa and help her figure out where she fits in. I was slightly surprised about Magnus and Camille's relationship but I think Magnus is just a lover in general, that it doesn't matter the gender of the person, it's that he finds them attractive.

  5. I've never read A Tale of Two Cities but that line Will quotes sure makes you wonder if he's trying to tell Tessa something.

I was totally shocked that Magnues and Camille had a relationship. Magnus is a resourceful warlock that KNOWS EVERYTHING (we learned that in City Of Bones and I'm pretty sure he'll help Tessa with her ability.

  6. Yay Magnus! :D I already knew about the relationship between Magnus and Cammille, having read CoFA already. (Though I must say tha I'm a huge fan of Alec & Magnus! :D)

I think that Magnus will be able to help Tessa somehow- maybe in the next books or so. (I mean, with THAT ending, he's bound to, right? *wink wink* :P)

  7. I think maybe will and tessa's relationship will be much like jace and clary's will is goimg to think he's not good enough for tessa or that her being with him will only result in hurt, so he'll keep his distance to try and protect her, all the while only hurting her more.

I think magnus will be able to help tessa, if he can't noone can. And no i wasnt surprised to hear magnus and camille were and item. I figured in this era even if he knew he was gay he would restrain himself, or maybe he's bisexual anyway. But it's not surprising him and camille, she is very beautiful.

  8. Will having the same ending as Sydney Carlton? I read Tale of Two Cities and that question has been in my mind ever since. Sydney is broken just like Will is and Sydney's love was so genuine that he gave all that he had for the love he felt and I have a feeling Will would do the same. I have always loved happy endings but I can't shake the feeling that no matter what ending Cassandra give us we won't be happy. I am not ready to say goodbye to either Jem or Will.

  9. Will using this quote and commenting on what this quote means to him, shows us he has genuine feelings for Tessa. We know Shadowhunters and Downworlders aren't supposed to get involved,(She might be a warlock) but it's more than that. He must have something in his past that he has done that he is ashamed of and therefore believes he is not good enough for anyone. He works hard to push others away by acting arrogant and rude.
I love Magnus!! I believe he is going to be a great help to Tessa. I am looking forward to seeing Magnus influence and involvement with everyone.
And what a cliffhanger we were left at the end of this chapter!!!

  10. I must say I agree. It feels like that would be something Will would think. I think he thinks he doesn't deserve anybody, that he not good enough for anyone. Even though he seems to think very highly of himself his selfesteem is suprisingly low...

I think it was kind of indicated that they had a relationship when I read about Camille in TMI. So no suprise there really. He might be able to help her come to terms with what she is and maybe help her alittle with ehr ability. I'm not so sure about being able to figure out who she really is. I think someone else will be able to give that answer.

  11. Will might try to pull the whole "love you enough to know you're better off without me" thing with Tessa... I'm not too sure it will work though. We shall see!

I read CA before I read TMI, but I still enjoyed Magnus! I definitely think he will be helping Tessa figure a few things out.

  12. * I did not think much of the quote when I first read the book. Now it does seem that Will is hiding something, and maybe he will love Tessa by keeping his distance.

    * I love Magnus! I was so happy to have him appear in the book. Magnus being with Camille, made me think that there must be something good about her. We shall see though.

  13. I did think Will was trying to hint to Tessa about himself the first time I read. Now reading it a second time, I really think he was trying to tell Tessa something.

I was surprised to read that Magnus was in a straight relationship, but just assumed he was bi. He seems open to all possibilities!

  14. I think it is a foreshadowing because he seems like the self-sacrifising and self0hating type. Cassandra Clare seems to like that quality in her YA love interests.

I honestly was not at all surprised that Magnus was bisexual. I don't know why, he just seemed like he could like girls as well as guys. I'm not sure about their relationship though. She seems kind of like she was the one who taught him how to survive living forever. Sort of as if she was his mentor and also his enemy at the same time, a love/hate relationship.

I think Magnus will help Tessa in the future because he is the one who knows the most about being a warlock so far. I'm not sure Tessa is a warlock though. Maybe an angel/warlock like how Clary and Jace are a mix of Shadowhunters and Angels. Just a possibility. I don't know what she is.

  15. I definitely thought that when Will said that he was talking about him and Tessa. Meaning, he loves Tessa, or really likes her but won't ever act upon it b/c it would be better for Tessa to stay away from him.

I also got very giddy when Magnus appeared! I couldn't wait to see how this Magnus was similar and different to his future self. I think he will play a big role in helping Tessa find out who she really is. Especially the fact that in City of lass, we know that they still talk. So I like to thing they are still very close.

  16. I can see THE TALE OF TWO CITIES tying into Will and Tessa's relationship...will be sad if it ends that way

Oh Magnus....such a charming rogue. Don't like to think of him with Camille, he is much too good for her. I believe Magnus will be the one to help Tessa the most...he will know something of her history and be able to help her handle whatever she finds more so than Will or Jem who are emotional attached

  17. Will and Tessa discussing A Tale of Two Cities was a pretty intense conversation. But I think this is just how Will is picturing the future. He wants to be with Tessa I can tell but he doesn't believe he is good enough and I'm betting this has to do with the secret he is hiding. It's big enough to make Will think he can never tell Tessa and he thinks he is trying to protect her but actually does the opposite. I truly think he and Tessa will end up together, maybe not in this book but by the time the series is over.

I found it a little suprising that Camille and Magnus had a relationship but I can see how that happened. Camille is a powerful vampire and Magnus is a powerful warlock but both are stunning and smart and of course Camille is extremely pretty. Magnus is a gentleman so I can see what attracted them to each other. I also think Magnus is exactly the person to help Tessa. He is old and wise and is handy with the happenings in Downworld. I think his powers and knowledge will help Tessa unlock herself so once and for all we will know what she is.

  18. *Yes! Especially since the letter that is going to be in CP. I definitely think will lost someone because of the way he tries to push Tessa away.
*I wasn't surprised. Mostly because i read fallen angels before i read this. I also very much Squeed when he was intoduced

  19. * I do think Will and Tessa discussing A Tale of Two Cities could be foreshadowing what their relationship will end up like, especially when Will says, "Yes,"... "He loved her enough to know she was better off without him." I think they will help each other deal with their pasts.

    * I do think Magnus will be that certain someone who can help Tessa with her ability and figure out exactly what she is. He could see her true face when he touched her. I think he will really be able to help Tessa discover who she really is.

  20. I was not surprised by Magnus being in a relationship with Camille. He even made some hinting remarks about other guys during the conversation in the study at Club Pandemonium. It was always obvious to me that Magnus was bisexual. I commend Clare writing in a bisexual character because we see very little of that in fiction, especially YA.

As far as Magnus helping Tessa, yes I think he can. Everyone is speculating that she is a warlock so he would be the perfect person to help her discover her true ability.

  21. I read CA before I started TMI so when I first came across Magnus, I didn't really think anything of it. Now that I'm rereading it, it's weird to see how much he'll do for her considering (spoilers) how cold he was towards her in CoFA.

  22. Sorry, by *her* I meant Camille, obviously lol =]

  23. Yep, Will thinks he is not good enough for Tessa and their discussion is a reflection of their relationship.

I think Magnus will be able to tell Tessa what she is exactly. I think they will need his help in the end of the trilogy to deal with the Magister.

  24. I'm glad Will admitted to having read the book. Although I'm going to be mad at him if he hurts Tessa because he is too busy being full of self-loathing to treat her right.

I'm only surprised by a relationship between a warlock and a vampire, but not that Magnus would have an untypical lover. But then if Camille had an affair with a warewolf, I guess she isn't predictable in her choices either.

  25. LOL MANGUS.

    - It may have been foreshadowing, but I feel that was a rare Will occurrence, him sharing his feelings; because that's what he always does, he pushed people and love away, because he's not good enough...or at least that's how I read him so far.

    - I was surprised because I'm used (and love) to Alec/Magnus. I thought it was really cool when they got to see each other again in CoFA! And I loved the bit about Magnus saying his favorite combination was blue eyes and dark hair, hahaha. I do think Magnus will be a great friend to Tessa, and if that's the case he might just be an aid in figuring out how she came to be.

  26. i hadn't really considered much about his quote, but now looking at what others have to say, now i also think that yes, it could quite likely be a foreshadowing. it's quite gratifying to know that will shows cracks in what is his normal arrogant and sarcastic attitude, and show more emotion. just like when he was pretending to be drunk but then when jem collapsed, he sprung into action to help jem. those moments when he shows his feelings really makes me like him more. although it must be frustrating for tessa, who is also unsure about how she feels about him. i know i would personally be really frustrated with a guy like that, one who hates himself or is always secluded and has random outbursts of emotion and what not.

magnus! i love him, i'm always interested to find out more about him. hmm, i wasn't surprised so much as just.. intrigued as to why magnus is in a relationship with camille. i don't really understand if and/or how they click, because magnus nor camille have really spoken of their love for one another. i just don't really think they suit each other, and maybe it's just kind of the love where, 'oh you're here.. we're both immortal.. lets try a relationship!' kind of thing. *shrug* anyway, we all love magnus much more with alec, because you can really see why they love each other. ^u^ and of all people, of course magnus will help tessa! and because tessa is the closest thing to a warlock, but she doesn't bear any physical markings of a warlock, i think magnus is highly interested as to how she came to be, and what other potential powers she might have. and along the way they'll become great chums. huzzah. :D

  27. I enjoy tragic love stories because they always have a sad part but the two always end up together. I dislike a Tale of Two Cites though. The ending was so so so sad. I feel terrible for Sydney Carton. Lucie Manette and Charles Darnay are so good together though. I think that in the end the characters will match up but not in the expected way. I think Darnay may end up to be Jem while Carton may be Will.
Magnus. Oh my Magnus. I swear that he is my gay boyfriend. I love his character, personality, flamboyancy, crazziness and absolutly everything about him. His relationship wth Camille is one that makes me go oh my my. I don't know what to make of it, though it deffinatly reminds me of the expression 'What dosen't hurt you makes you stronger.' It will totally hurt him but he is so strong in personality. I think hes relationship with Tessa will be one to see though.

  28. I don't know if the Tale of Two Cities reference was foreshadowing or just another glimpse into Will. I think he cares more than he wants to about Tessa. He doesn't feel worthy and hides it behind his arrogance and wit.
Oh Magnus, how I've missed you. I don't think I got a true vision of Magnus until I started reading the MI series, but this was enough to make me want to know so much more about him.

  29. D'aw, those two are so cute when they have there discussions about books. And I do think it's foreshadowing future events. You can tell that literature is a huge part of this series, and parallels will certainly be drawn.

Nah, I wasn't surprised. Magnus is old; of course he's had his fair share or relationships. Actually, I think Magnus and Camille or a cute couple, because they balance each other out. Camille's a bit uptight, and Magnus loves to have fun.
And I'm excited to see Magnus's and Tessa's relationship grow. An odd pair, but I think they would bring out the best in each other.

  30. I believe that Will's reference to Sydney Carton is that he relates himself to him - that he's a self-destructive person that can only hurt the people that he loves, so it's better off not to care for anything or anyone at all. I know quite a bit about addicts and how they behave, since my brother, former best friend, and husband are all alcoholics, some recovered and some not (my hubby has been sober for 4 years, I'm so proud of him.) He believes he's inherently bad and doesn't deserve love from anyone, especially someone as good as Tessa. You can tell that he keeps trying to push her away, but she seems to unknowingly beguile many of the people she meets with her sweet and honest demeanor, and William Herondale is no exception.

PS I love Magnus and his frank and brutal honesty. I liked him before in TMI series, but this introductory scene with him made me love him so much more.

  31. I was happy to see Magnus! I'm definitely surprised that he's with Camille, because of the fact that she's a vampire.

  32. I personally haven't read A Tale of Two Cities so I can't further comment. I do think they are good together.

I think Magnus is part of this book because he has a major role in the whole story. I think Magnus will help Tessa discover more of her powers.
