Infernal Devices Clockwork Prince 31 Day Celebration: Day 5, The Setting

One of the things I LOVE about this series, is the setting. Cassie does such an amazing job at bringing her Victorian setting to life. I've always been fascinated with the 1800's era, and London's Victorian era has always been most intriguing to me. I did a little research on London during the Victorian era and I was shocked to learn that London had a population of about 1 million people at the beginning of the 1800's and by 1901 had more than 6 million. I guess that shouldn't be surprising considering it was one of the largest and more powerful cities in the world at that time. It was the beginning of the industrial revolution and with that came great wealth as well as extreme poverty. There was so much going in London during this time. I've always wondered what it would have been like to a glimpse of the city during this time.

I had wanted to find a few pictures of places or near places in CA and CP, but alas google and I aren't the best of friends and I couldn't find the ones I was looking. I did however find a few pictures of what London looked like in the 1800's.

One of my favorite scenes in CA is when Jem tells Tessa he'd like to take her to his favorite place in all of London. I may have sighed once or twice during their walk together. I don't know about you guys, but I'd happily accompany Jem on a site seeing tour around London. I wouldn't care if that was a walking tour or a tour in which we ride around in a horse drawn carriage. Although it would also be fun to spend the day with Will or accompany Magnus to one the lavish parties he attends, even shopping with Jessamine would be entertaining.

Wouldn't you like to walk arm in arm with Jem along the water front or you know, attend a masquerade ball Will.... I'm a little torn on taking a stroll around the park arm in arm with Jem, attending a masquerade ball with Will or just hanging out with Magnus. If you could spend the day with any one of the CA/CP characters in Victorian era London, who would you want to spend the day with and why?

  1. A midnight stroll with Jem through London... Would I love that!!! But ooh... A masquerade ball with Will?!? I can't pick. Can I go with both? ;) Both sound so lovely! Or I could go shopping with Magnus! I hate shopping, but for Magnus, I'll make an exception. :D

Love the pic of the bridge! *envies Tessa for the walk with Jem*

  3. That's a tough question. I think I would like to spend an evening with Jem exploring the beauty of London. Although shopping with Magnus would be cool too. He could help me pick out some great things.

  5. Well, I'm gonna be greedy! haha. I would like to hang out with everyone fomr the Institute in the morning, eat breakfast and stuff. Go for a walk through London with Jem during the day. Go shopping with Jessamin in the afternoon for something to wear for the evening. Have help and hang out with Sophie while getting ready for the evening. Go to a fun place with Will (like a club, a ball or a party or something) and end up at Magnus place having some kind of afterparty with him until the sun rises again ;)

  8. Jen- Sold! I'd take a midnight stroll with Jem. :)

Carina- Imagine I'd have a great time with Will too.

Amy- I know, it is a tough question. I really don't know who I'd pick. I'd like so say all of them.

Anonymous- LOL I'm sure Magnus would be up for that.

Lollo- I like that thought process! I'm totally with you on that. Divide the day up between each of them. Brilliant!

Jen- I've come to realize that any time spent with Magnus would be rather interesting and unforgettable.

  11. Jem no doubt. Doing anything with him to be honest. I think he's my favorite character from anything ever. And as much as I love Magnus...I have the feeling TMI Magnus would be much more fun to spend a day with. Though I'd still choose Jem over modern Magnus.

  13. I love masquerade balls because the idea of all social standards being thrown to the wind and just simply getting to know someone without knowing who they are is very tempting. However, Magnus is also awesome and I'd love to talk to him. I also find Camille quite an interestingly vindictive character. So if I spent a day in the world of The Infernal Devices, I think I'd want to spend it at a masquerade ball with Magnus and Camille.

  14. Depends what mood i was in. If I just wanted to hang out, a nice stroll with Jem would be soooo romantic. But if I was feeling like some action and adventure, Will could probably find us something thrilling and crazy to do :)

  19. Jem! Hands down. I don't know. I think I couldn't pull-off a "proper" conversation with Will without pushing him over the River Thames. Jem could put me at ease in a conversation, and would probably make me wish time would stand still when I'm with him. :D
