City of Fallen Angels Read A Long Day 18: Scars of Fire

Welcome to Day 18 of the City of Fallen Angels Read-A-Long. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the COLS giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 18: Scars of Fire

Clary breaks the hold Lilith had over Jace, Simon defeats Lilith and Alec frees Camille. We obviously know Cassie's written well enough by now to know that the Shadowhunters are not going to get off that easy, and there's most likely to going to be something worse that's going to happen to them.
  • Were you surprised at the sacrifices Jace, Clary and Simon were all willing to make for each other?
  • Do you think this is the last we'll see of Lilith's power? I'm guessing she still has some sort of influence on someone else.
  • What are your over all thoughts with this chapter?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading COFA for the first time.

  1. I loved this chapter! You finally can have clear thought about what is going on. Well, I was sure that Jace and Clary were ready to sacrifice for each other's sake, and also Simon and Clary as well. But I was really surprised by Simon's behaviour and sacrifice! Because he was ready to sacrifice his life not only for Clary but for Jace too! *-*
I think Lilith's power have no limits, she could have done everything to them and the only thing that could have faced her was Caino's mark. I knew since the first time I've read the chapter that the mark represented the only possibility they had to kill her.
I loved how Cassandra have created suspense in about 16 chapters and makes us understand something only in the last two or three chapters. She's so good at creating scenes full of action!

  2. *I wasn't surprised at all. They all really care about each other and I wouldn't have expected anything less out of them.

*I don't think that is that last we will see of Lilith at all. They only killed her physical form. I don't believe that she could really be that easy to get rid of completely, even with Simon having the mark of Cain.

*We know that it's not over. That's not how Cassie works, besides there are still 2 more books and we know it is just going to get more intense!! I think things are about to get very complicated.

  3. I'm not surprised! Jace and Clary would die for each other and I think Simon's right in there too.

No way is Lilith gone. I think they only made her mad - which is a bad thing.

  4. I was surprised that Simon would sacrifice something for Jace and vice versa but other than that, no.

I think Lilith's power has extended to Jonathan but I do believe she is dead.

I thought this was one of the best chapters because I love action.

  5. Well they've been through good and bad moments all three of them and they've a bond which they're willing to protect the others by sacrificing themselves, this chapter was pretty intense.

No, I see something like Narnia here, Jadis died but was spiritually alive in the second movie so yeah maybe Lilith is still alive spiritually and someone could revive her. Or maybe Camille might continue Lilith's plan which she couldn't finish.

I really loved this chapter, mostly because Izzy, Alec, Maia and Jordan were seen in action and I really liked that it was amazing, and well of course the part where Camille manipulates Alec making him do something he difnt want to. The scene with Lilith was amazing as well.

Have a great rest of the day everyone=)

  6. I was not surprised at Jace, Clary, and Simon. I love all three characters, and my expectations are very high! :D

    Lilith is gone, but her influence? There are too many loose ends out there, so I am sure we will be reading about her influence in COLS! {unfortunately}

I enjoyed this chapter because it is so well written. Every word and action counted, and I loved Clary's quick thinking with the hound from hell. Obviously Jace's training has paid off! it's a good thing they did not spend all of their time making out ;P (I am quoting my daughter here....)

Thanks again for hosting the Read-a-Long!

  7. Clary loves the boys..the boys love Clary...all have good hearts and were willing to sacrifice all....not surprised at all..

The Mark may have ended Lilith...I'm sure she is gone...but her influence may come back in the form of Maureen, Camille or Sebastian..

A perfect chapter...the tension was building...and this chapter delivered...

  8. I willsay i am not surprused at the sacrifices simon clary nd jace were willing to make for each other. Throughout this whole book all of them had bonding moments . And plus they both love clary. Clearly her love for jace broke liliths hold on him. Just becuae shes gone doesnt mean her influence on her follower still wont try to do her work. This by far is the best chapter.

  9. I am not surprised by the selfless acts each of the characters did for each other they are so closely nit. They love each other in their own ways. I found it so sweet how Simon remembered Clary.

I definitively believe that Lilith will be back, she's so evil how can she not be.

I loved this chapter it was so intense.

  10. I don't tink Lilith is gone she
Can't be if she is that old she knows how to stay alive. I really love how every one looks out for one another.

  11. I wasn't surprised, but I do love how this moment on the roof defines and cements the relationships between these three. For Jace and Clary, it is a testing of their love for each other. Can Clary still trust Jace, even when it seems like the real Jace is gone? Can he trust still trust her, even when she cuts him and at first, he doesn't understand? This is the scene where Simon proves himself, where he and Jace figure out that they do care about each other (in that bro, we both love this girl and hate this demon, let's work together, also I don't mind hanging out with you so much anymore and I kind of understand you way that guys care).
I love how everything in the book builds up to this one chapter. Of course there is still one chapter left to set up book 5, but this is the coming together of most of the plot.

  12. *I wasn't surprised. They really care about each other :)
    it was really nice ^^

*I don't think that is that last we will see of Lilith.

    *LOVED IT!

  13. I wasn't surprised because we've been able to see their willingness to help each other throughout the books. Especially in that type of situation.

I seriously doubt it's the last we've seen of her "influence". Lilith may no longer be able to do her thing, but it wouldn't surprise me that there would be someone else to continue after her.

I loved finally figuring out what all was going on.

  15. It never surprises me when anyone is willing to sacrifice anything in 5his series, especially when it is Jace, Clary, and Simon and they are doing something for the other.
I highly doubt this is the last of Lilith. She is way too powerful to be brought down just one. I am sure we will meet her again soon. I don't take her for someone who doesn't have a backup plan so I guarantee Lilith has influence over someone else.
This chapter was so intense and beautifully written. After reading it everythin definitely fills in together and I love how the story was set up for this chapter.

  16. Throughout the series we have seen Jace Clary and Simon make tons of sacrifices for each other. What happpened in this chapter, while unexpected, was kinda expected. I was happy with the way it went.

Overall, I really liked this chapter. I liked what happened and as always Cassie writes like a genius.

  17. Thank you for each of your comments!

I'm with you guys, I loved seeing how much they all cared for each other, especially Jace and Simon. I was a little surprised to see how much they'd sacrifice for each other.
