The Mortal Instruments Movie Monday #1: British Accents

During my recent (this past weekend) trip to the TMI movie set, I got inspired to start a new meme on here. It's one I casually mentioned to Cassie during lunch, as I told her I thought it would be fun to focus on various elements of this movie. Currently I'm heavily embargoed and can not say anything other than what I've already posted about and shared pictures of. During this period of time of not being able to talk about anything, not even the tiny details, I'm going to focus on things that have already been discussed or posted about, either by Cassie, the studio, MTV news etc. Once the embargo is lifted, I'm going to break my set visit down into segments and talk about each element of the movie. I'll go more into details on that when I can.

One of the things I love about the TMI fandom is how passionate we are!! Seriously, I've not been apart of a fandom who's been as passionate as we are. In many ways I feel for those associated with the movie as that puts on ton of pressure for them to get it right and make things work. One of the things that has had a heated debate among fans is the announcement of the characters having British accents.

You will not hear myself or Sophie complain about this! We are suckers for an accent. Secondly, I think this is going to work perfectly! In all honestly, I do not remember any where in the books where it mentioned if the Shadowhunters had accents or not. I know many people assumed they'd have a Brooklyn or some sort of New York type of ascent, because the stories are set there, but to me, it makes sense to give them ascents. We know they're not from New York, except for Clary and Simon. The others live there, but they're from Idris, and the fact that Idris is really set outside the US makes it perfectly normally for them to have an accent, at least to me anyway. I don't think them having accents for the movie is that surprising at all. In fact, I love this attention to detail they're given the cast. That's just my personal feelings on the accents. I don't know, maybe I'm in the minority that thinks that.

Here's what Cassie had to say:

The decision to have the Shadowhunters speak with British accents (their native accents in the case of all the actors pretty much except Kevin) has to do with Harald wanting to show that they are different from those that surround them, that they are a people who are separate, different, and with an older heritage. I actually do like the Shadowhunters’ British accents (they all did their auditions with both British and American accents and the British accents for whatever reason worked better) – and I don’t think it’s contrary to the books’ spirit, but YMMV!

I'm just saying you won't hear me complain about hearing Jace in the City of Ashes movie say in his British accent, "Close your eyes and think on England". You might hear me yell, "Remind it so we can hear that line again!" Though it's awhile before that movie happens (hoping it will happen), I'm really looking forward to hearing British accents in the TMI movie. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the British accents. Please feel free to leave a comment below.

Mundane Monday #155

Happy Monday! I seriously didn't want this weekend to end, and I'm tempted to stomp around like a two year old yelling "I don't like Monday!" Not that it would do me any good. Why can't Dr Who be real? He could take me back to this past Friday and I'd be completely happy with it. lol Since Dr Who's not here, I've got a lovely teaser that Cassie posted this weekend from Clockwork Princess to help get us through our Monday.

Gabriel would not soon forget the look that spread over the man’s face at that: there was satisfaction in it, but there was little surprise. It was clear he had expected nothing else, and nothing better, from the Lightwood boys.

Oh, and you know what else will brighten up your Monday, this fabulous post from Cassie that includes her dream cast from a few years back for TMI: CoB, which includes her friends. Per Cassie:

Yeah I really can’t stress how much I NEVER thought they’d actually make a movie out of my Shadowhunter books. Even when they were optioned as, like I said, most options never materialize into films. It’s really too bad I had to dismantle my plans to make the film starring my friends in my garage. I had it all cast:

Simon: Maureen Johnson
Clary: Libba Bray
Alec: David Levithan
Jace: John Green
Isabelle: Holly Black
Magnus: Holly’s husband, Theo
The Seelie Queen: Gwenda Bond
Valentine: Scott Westerfeld
Sebastian: Sarah Rees Brennan
Luke: Paolo Bacigalupi, or possibly Jeph Jacques since he is somewhat wolfy and lives near me
Jocelyn: Garth Nix
Chairman Meow: My cat
Church: Holly’s cat

I'm sitting down with Libba this weekend at the Austin Teen Book Festival, and you can be sure I'm asking her about her role as Clary. ;) lol

About the Book:

As 16-year-old Grace recovers from tragedy, her science class is chosen by Agent Sweeney at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to help with research on the new "Red Wolf Reintroduction Program".

While she’s excited about helping with the conservation of the endangered wolves, Grace knows this means being outdoors in the worst winter recorded, in a place she no longer feels comfortable. It also means working closely with Wyn (her ex) and his annoying girlfriend (Skyler), a girl whose idea of getting close to nature is picking silk plants and growing fake plants.

After a couple of wolves show up dead, Grace almost quits. However, when a fellow project team member goes missing, Grace continues the assignment under a renewed suspicion that someone might be sabotaging the conservation program. She quietly begins to hunt for clues.

Little does she know, she is being hunted too.

About the series:

Uncontrollable is the second book in "The Nature of Grace" series by S.R. Johannes. Untraceable, the first book in the series, has won and been nominated for several awards including Winner of the 2012 IndieReader Discovery Award (YA), 2012 Georgia Author of the Year (YA Nominee), and a finalist in The Kindle Book Review's "Best Indie Book of 2012 (YA)".

Kirkus reviewed Untraceable as "A thrilling story is a dramatic entanglement of mystery, deception and teen romance. The action flows like a brisk mountain stream interspersed with rapids, holding suspense to last page." If you like a page turner, you will love this series!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

SHANNON MESSENGER graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts where she learned that she liked watching movies much better than making them. She also regularly eats cupcakes for breakfast, sleeps with a bright blue stuffed elephant named Ella, and occasionally gets caught talking to imaginary people. So it was only natural for her to write stories for children. Keeper of the Lost Cities is her first middle grade novel. Let the Sky Fall, a young adult novel, will follow in Spring 2013. She lives in Southern California with her husband and an embarrassing number of cats.
