Clockwork Prince Read Along Day #12: Chapter 11

Only 16 more days till Clockwork Princess is out!!!

Welcome to Day 12 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 11
  • The letter Charlotte receives from Ragnor Fell is a bit alarming. Mortmain reminds me a lot of Valentine. Their clever, cunning, and well prepared to do whatever it takes to get what they want. Simply put, they are extremely dangerous people. I can't figure out what it is Mortmain would want from Will. What are your thoughts? Do you think it's right for Charlotte to not reveal what she knows to Will?
  • I LOVED getting to understand Jem and Will a bit more. Their scene together was a bit heartbreaking, because we are given a glance at the pain and suffering both guys are dealing with it, but it's also hopeful as well, because they two do have an incredibly strong bond, and I think it's one that goes beyond being tied together as Shadowhunters. What are your thoughts on Jem & Will's relationship?
  • Well, I didn't see that little secret of Jessamine's coming. Are you guys surprised by this?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. The letter did surprise me a bit. I like that Cecily sounds spunky and feisty just like her brother. I think that Charlotte should share everything with Will. He has a right to now what is going on with his family, especially if they are in trouble.

I see Jem and Will as brothers. Even though they are not related they have a bond that makes them care for each other possibly more than any other person.

Yikes Jessamine! I didn't see that coming at all. I'm curious to see how this is going to play into the rest of the story. Plus this scene just made me love Sophie more!

  2. * I don't know if I think Charlotte should tell Will. I think at this point there isn't anything they can really do anyways and it would just bring him more worry and pain.

    * That scene with Will and Jem was very heartbreaking. It shows how truly amazing Jem is, but it also shows Will's good side. Jem is really the only one that he has (in his mind) and he just doesn't think. He would never want to hurt Jem. When I see the vulnerable side of Will it is like a punch to the gut. I truly love both Will and Jem.

    * I can't really say that I am surprised. If it had been just some random guy she wouldn't have been sneaking around. Everyone already knows that she despises Shadowhunters so it wouldn't have been shocking her going out to meet up with a mundane guy. The sneaking made it obvious that it was something much worse.

  3. I think Will should know, but at the same time no because it could cause more alarm. will can be reckless.

Will and Jem s bond is so strong. they make each other strong even in their worst moments. they are both suffering yet they have each other which makes them able to stand what they are going through.

I was shocked! I didn't even see it coming even though i knew she didn't want to be a shadowhunter

  4. Mortmain might want power over Will because it could in turn help in manipulating Tessa. But obviously he planned his influence over the Herondales before Tessa came to England and eventually escaped from Mortmain, so I wonder if he can see the future since he dabbles in the dark arts (?) The letter did surprise me, and Cecily sounds like a carbon-copy of Will. I think Charlotte is correct in keeping the information to herself. She must follow the law.

Jem and WIll both break my heart. I'm happy that they are parabatia because they each have one another.

I knew that Jessamine was bitter, but her level of stupidity did surprise me....did someone just cue Pink's "Stupid Girls?" :/

  5. Mortmain seems to have a lot more cards to play than the Shadowhunters. Every time the Shadowhunters think they have a step ahead of Mortmain, it turns out he’s already five steps ahead. Whatever he wants form Will, it can’t be good. And the way I see it, Will has enough on his mind right now without knowing that Cecily blames him for their father’s misfortunes.

I’m glad to see that Will and Jem are a strong parabatai pair. Family for each other will all else seems lost. With any luck, it will hold strong through what will inevitably be the Tessa issue, but who knows?

Jessamine is still in talks with Nate! I thought she hated him? I don’t believe it! She’s too proud to keep in touch with him seriously, isn’t she? Maybe she’s been spying on him and Mortmain for revenge, and for the Institute? She’s been trying to be helpful as of late. So maybe Jessamine is just planning her vengeance on Nate and that’s why no one else knew about it, because it’s more personal for her rather than Clave business? She would be selfish enough to do that, wouldn’t she? This could work out. Jessamine could surprise us in a good way. Right? Tell me there’s hope! D:

    1. And if Jem says that Will's walls are coming down, then I guess they are! Which is a good thing. Will needs to let those walls go.

  6. ~I don't necessarily think it's Will the Magister wants, but leverage against him--his family. Or at least against the occupants of the Institute. Tessa, Jem, Jessamine, and Charlotte have no other family; Henry I'm not sure about. The only person with family is Will, and he cares about them, making them perfect for leverage when and if the Magister needs it. It is very right for Charlotte to keep what she knows to herself--she's breaking the law as it is, and, though I hate this rule, he left his family and that means he cannot see them anymore.
~Jem and Will's relationship seems unbreakable to me, but I know that it won't always be like that, especially if Jem dies. they remind me a lot of Jace and Alec, but even those two don't seem as close and Will and Jem.
~I'm not sure how surprised I was by Jessamine's actions, but I always find myself angry with her--I know she hates Nephilim and being one, but I never imagined she would betray everyone.

  7. I agree Mortmain is like Valentine all over again but I think Mortmain is even more evil and cunning.
I have no clue what connection Mortmain has with Will's family and what he wants with them. I think it has something to do with his big evil plan or something. As for Charlotte, I believe Will has the right to know. Although I'm pretty sure Charlotte is afraid to tell him 'cause she's afraid of what Will would do.

Jem and Will's relationship goes way beyond their parabatai bond. They have a strong, brotherly bond and it's nice to see it in this chapter.
Their relationship is something you rarely see in people - it's quite incredible really.

Jessamine, whoa! I did not see that coming. That was absolutely unexpected.. and it's Jessamine! sheesh.. I can't wait to see what's coming next.

  8. I think Charlotte's decision was right. I'm a bit scare for the characters because Mortmain is very clever. I don't know what will be the end of this story but I know that our hearts will be broken.
Jem and Will's relationship is amazing. I don't know what should I say. I don't know what will be happen with Will if Jem dies.
I was surprised. I don't understand that why she hates the Shadowhunters. Oh, Sophie.*clap*

  9. ok let's see, Chapter 11 and 12 for me are super important chapters and I think I wouldnt be lying if I say although I have read the book 4 times, I have gone over these two chapters at least 15 times, I have them highlighted everywhere LOL

First of let's start with the letter Charlotte gets... Mortmain is 200% scary and cruel and I think that he has been planning this for a long long time and he didnt put anything into action until he was sure he had all the pieces of his puzzle in place, and I say this because even now I still dont know what he has up his sleeve for Clockwork Princess... but he is to be feared and if there is one thing I'm sure of is that he will use Jem's drug as a bargaining chip, that idea has never left me every since I read Woolsey Scott mention it the first time I read the book.
I dont think Charlotte should tell Will anything about his parents, she is not even supposed to be keeping taps on them and it is against the law.

Jem and Will... Oh my poor poor Will, my heart contracts for him so much, I dont think I have ever loved a character in a book as much as I love William Herondale and his pain destroys me every time.
It doesnt help that this time I'm not reading but listening to the audio book narrated by Ed Westwick and OMG! it is THAT much better! (girls if you haven't gotten the audio version it's defo a must!)

The conversation when Will tells Jem that he is the only family he has and that he would die for him and how he has saved his life over and over and over and how he would be lost without him kills me, makes me cry every single time.. his feelings and his suffering are just so so raw, that's it's impossible not to feel his pain.

I wasnt shocked to find out Jessie was sneaking out with Nate, I mean it was already weird that she was sneaking out of the house, though I gotta say that I didnt think it was with Nate when I read the book for the first time... but i did think she was up to no good...
and can I just say that I absolutely LOVE Sophie!? She is great in every single way :D

This chapter also has one of my favorite Will lines: "Be prepared to swoon at my finery" .... I adore him!

  10. * The letter form Ragnor Fell is very alarming. Charlotte needs to tell Will everyhting. He has a right to knwo as it is his family. Will understands the law but maybe he could help keep them safe. Mortain is a ruthless man. I think he is worse than Valentine. Mortain will use anything he can to get even with Clave and Shadowhunter.
*Jem and Will care so much for each other. They are bond by so much more than just a Shadowhuter bond. They are closer than brothers.
*I cannot believe Jessamine would he so sneaky and with Nate of all people. He is no good and she knows that. This is going to be a bigger problem than her just sneaking around with a mundane.

Will is so incredible. He is so entertaining. I love him!

Sophie is becoming such an intraciate part of this group. Who knew she had all this power in her!

  11. The letter is disturbing. I have to say I'm loving Rangor's spying. He's a clever one himself. I think at this point and judging by Will's reaction at seeing his sister, Charlotte must keep this information from Will for now. Mortmain has indeed been scheming for some time. I think ultimately it all revolves around Will and Tessa.

Just when you think the ties might be breaking Will and Jem reinforce and strengthen their bond. Their relationship is amazing. It was wonderful to see them so intimately. I really fear for Will when Jem is gone. I hope he will have Tessa to see him through.

Jessamine. Oh my. I was stunned and yet not completely surprised. I can't imagine what she is thinking. I don't think she could betray everyone that way. Does she think she can fool Nate? What is she really up to? Her actions have put everyone at risk again- especially Tessa. And hooray for Sophie yet again! I'm loving her more and more.

I'm anxious to see what chapter 12 will reveal.

  12. I can just imagine how heartbroken when Will gets a hold of Ragnor Fell's letter. As much as Will loves to be with his family, its the same love that keeps him from them, just to protect them. That demon curse has affected Will's every existence. As fate would play a cruel joke, unknowingly, Mortmain even joined to double Will's misery, hitting him where it hurts the most! Charlotte made the right decision to burn any evidence for Will's own sake, but she should tell the truth when the right time comes.

Will and Jem are the best of brothers as they can get out there. Even if Will made the craziest mistake towards Jem, he still understood and forgave him, for, not only that they're parabatai, but the mere fact that they perfectly understood one another imperfections. More than that, Will's willing to sacrifice everything, whatever it takes, just for Jem, even at the expense of his own happiness. I'm sure, the same is true for Jem. Probably, even if there's no Shadowhunter bonds between them, they'd still end up as the best of brothers. Jem is Will's spark that makes him hope for something and care for someone - aside from his family, aside from Tessa, more than his life - despite of all that emotional baggage he's been carrying.

Good work, Sophie! She's really getting some major points!

Jessamine. I was so betting that there's definitely something wrong with that girl. But, I think she's just a victim of circumstances. The way she was described, she longed to be with someone, had a liking for Nate. Probably she was deceived by Nate into being a spy against the Shadowhunters, she was made to believe that in return for the information she's been spilling out, she gets the love of Nate. It looked like Nate and Mortmain is really just using her, or Mortmain is using them both.

  13. It's Charlotte's right not to tell Will about anything, especially his parents. He never asked her to spy on his parents, just if anything happened to them--as death do they part--then Charlotte will do as she promised to break the news to Will. No one knows or understand Will and his love for his family so as for Charlotte, she doesn't want to burden him, he never asked, and she just might push him more away if she tried. She doesn't know Will's feelings. I'm not sure what Mortmain wants to do with with Will's family, seeing as to he barely met Tessa not long ago so it has no connection to her, the reason that is. Maybe it has something to do with the Shadowhunters and Will's family just happen to fall prey to Mortmain and his scheme of vengeance! Mortmain probably kept a tab on what happens at or around the London Institute so when he found a connection w Shadowhunter Will and his ex-shadowhunter family, he's found a pond to play with and to taunt the Clave and the Shadowhunter world. Will's family are just victims, wrong place wrong time. A family for a family is probably what Mortmain is thinking. And with his army or automatons to help him, he seems unstoppable.

Will and Jem's relationship is closer than parabatai, even though blood brothers are closer, they don't have the same connection. Obviously Jem is the right guy for Will, he's willing and able to be there, support him, put up with him, wait for him, be a shoulder he can lean on. Jem knows he'd die and it will never be Will's fault. Will has this attitude that no one can stand. His temper, his unkind words, remarks, never seem to pierce through Jem's skin. Will will never try to hurt Jem in any way, but everyone else. They are like family to each other. Always there for each other, doing everything in each others power to protect and help one another.

I never would suspect Jessamine meeting with Nate, especially Nate quoting Tennyson, lol. I remember Jessamine being so bold as to attack Nate and try to help Tessa when they were under attack at the institute in CA from Mortmain's automatons. I thought she hated Nate there after but a girl with a desperate attempt to have no dealings w Shadowhunter men, she can sure pick her soulmate. I knew something was up with Jessamine when she was dressing like a gentleman, sneaking off in the middle of the night. Who knew it was for Nate.
