Clockwork Prince Read Along Day #13: Chapter 12

Only 15 more days till Clockwork Princess is out!!!

Welcome to Day 13 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer one or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 12
  • Oh plot twist! Were you guys as shocked as I was about Nate, Tessa's brother, being in love with "Jessie", as he calls her? I can't believe she would betray the Shadowhunters the way she has. That's a low blow, even for Jessamine, at least I had thought it was. Did you guys see that one coming?
  • Hyacinth's introduction to the storyline complicates things a bit more. What do you make of what she was trying to tell Tessa? She apparently knows what Tessa is, but hasn't come out and said exactly what that is.
  • Holy HOT balcony kiss!! FINALLY Will and Tessa have their make out moment. That was just as hot as Tessa & Jem's. Leave it to Magnus to interrupt and um, point out that the lemonade they had, had warlock powder in it. As Magnus points out, "The kind that lowers your inhibitions and makes you do thing you would" - "not otherwise do." Sorry, I couldn't help but laugh at that. I think these two would have kissed no matter, though the urgency behind that kiss might have been less had they not had the drink. What do you guys think? Was this a "about time" kiss or a mistake?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. Like I said yesterday....didn't think "Jessie" was *that* stupid! :/ I sooooo didn't see that coming! It was a shocker.

    I. Hate. Fairies. At least in this series....but at least we know that Tessa isn't a changeling. I wonder what Hyacinth knows about Tessa's mom....hmmmmm......Could Tessa's mom have been a changeling? Why even bring up the changeling issue away....MEH! And what "service" was done to Tessa!!!!

I think the kiss was drug-induced, therefore a mistake, and if it hadn't been for Magnus saving their druggy butts they could have been caught! And why didn't Magnus recognize "the" demon....that had to have been WIll's blue demon, but I guess Magnus knew Will could deal, and he needed to get Tessa back to the Institute safely.

    1. I knew as soon as the demon was described as blue with a barbed tail and lizard-like features that it was about to get crazy. I don’t think Magnus reacted the way he did because he saw demons approaching but because he recognized the blue one from Will’s description and was preparing for the inevitable, or perhaps planning to catch it. And then watching Will tackle the thing, I guess Magnus just wasn’t expecting that.

  2. I did not see that coming!!!! I dont think he loves her and i feel bad for her because she betrayed her family. she is a traitor.

I wanted to know more, but i agree i dont like fairies. they are tricky. well i kind of have an idea of what she is but i have look for more clues in the books to see if i am right.

I dont think it was a mistake, they both wanted the kiss. they would have sooner or later. Will had always wanted to do that, and we got to see a gentle will.

  3. I cannot believe Jessamine. Seriously that was low and completely treacherous. How could she do something like that. I blame it all on Nate!

I'm intrigued to know more about Hyacinth and what she knows. Her story lead me to believe that Tessa's gift has something to do with mother. Hyacinth obvious knew her mother so either Tessa's mother was a downworlder or she had contact with a downworlder to do something with Tessa.

Yummy! That was a great kiss and of course Magnus had to enter. I can only think what was going through Will's mind at the time of learning about the drink. I'm sad that there great moment was ruined by that thought that their feelings were influenced by the demon powder, because I don't believe they were.

  4. I loooooooooooooove this chapter so much, I have Hyacinth's conversation with Tessa highlighted and I think I have gone back to it a million time to dissect it and try to put pieces together and here is what I think, I'm so glad we have finally gotten to this chapter cause I can disclose my theories LOL!
All theories have been put together with what we already know from CP I'm not using any of the snippets of CP2 or the prologue/first chapter in any way...

To me the revelation from Hyacinth throws everything for a loop and makes a lot of things click into place...
First lets clarify one thing, what I understand when she talks about the changeling is that "the changeling" is the child left in place of the healthy human, so to me changeling = the unhealthy fairy child left in place of
    Ok.....
This is the theory... I think Tessa is Aloysius Starkweather's great granddaughter...
We know by what Gabriel told Tessa that Aloysius' granddaughter Adele turned forsaken and died when she got marked and they assumed bad or lack of training to be the reason.. I dont think that's the case at all... Starkweather's grand daughter Adele was a sick child and I think she dies because she was not a shadowhunter and we already know that marks on non-shadowhunters turn them into forsaken or just plain kill them and I think this is what happened to Adele Starkweather, she was a changeling (not a shadowhunter), she gets marked and her body can't take it, turns forsaken and dies.

I think that the real Adele Starkweather was taken by the faeries and is Tessa's mother (making Tessa 1/2 fairy), Hyacinth mentions how much Tessa looks like her mother and I think this is why Aloysius about passes out when he sees Tessa, it was the shock of recognition when he saw her, I'm feeling pretty confident Tessa is part faerie though what else is she besides faerie, I dont know, there is obviously more to what happened to make Tessa what she is..

The balcony!!! OHHHHH the balcony is my very very favorite and it was about time...! and yes its true that they were under the effect of the faerie drugs but I think that it didnt make them do things they "didnt' want" to do but it made them lose their inhibitions and go for what they were both wanting to go for, it's so obvious that they love each other and it's so painful to see that they can't be together because of the wall Will has up to keep everyone out especially Tessa....

This chapter brings us another one of my favorite Will lines ever:
"I have wanted to do this every moment of every hour of every day that I have been with you since the day I met you. But you know that, you MUST know, don't you?"

How can one not swoon at his finery and his words? <3

    1. I mulled around the idea of a changeling, trying to understand why Hyacinth would even bring it up when Tessa wasn’t a changeling to begin with. I asked myself is there was anyone I read about who might have been in a family he or she didn’t belong to other than Tessa, and my first instantaneous thought brought forth the image of a little girl getting Marked for the first time and the familiar voice of Gabriel Lightwood explaining how she had turned Forsaken, despite being a Shadowhunter. Then I realized, perhaps Adele Starkweather wasn’t a Shadowhunter at all but a changeling. I also remembered her very bright eyes, like faerie eyes. That would mean the real Adele Starkweather went to live with faeries? Or perhaps if Mortmain had something to do with this, she went to live with mundanes, or at least kept under his watch. Which could mean the faeries swapped a mundane with bright eyes and a Shadowhunter for Mortmain, out of fairness. Adele is too old to have replaced Tessa, but perhaps Tessa’s mother was switched. That would make Tessa a Shadowhunter, not a faerie, wouldn’t it? And it would explain why Mr. Starkweather recognized Tessa. She must be the spinning image of her real grandmother or maternal relative. Maybe even those grey eyes are a Starkweather family trait.

So if Tessa is a Shadowhunter on her mother’s side, then why can she Change? It must have something to do with her real father. Everyone assumes Tessa is a warlock because of her gift. So could her dad be a demon? But if that were the case, wouldn’t Tessa be, well, dead? Who knows…there are exceptions to every rule. Because Mortmain said he created Tessa, it makes me wonder if he orchestrated the whole thing: taking a Shadowhunter child, watching her grow, finding a demon to trick her into getting pregnant, and then having Tessa. Or could Tessa’s father be a faerie or some other Downworlder? There are a lot of things to consider. If her mother is indeed the real Adele Starkweather, then the mystery question is what was Tessa’s father that would affect her ability to Change and provide her with immortality? I hope it isn’t Mortmain, because I can only handle so much incest.

    2. I definitely think that there is more to what Tessa is which I can't elaborate more about because of course I have already read this book and it wouldnt be fair plus I have read the snippets for the clockwork princess, the book jacket, the prologue and the 1st chapter.

I think Adele Starkweather was definitely changed and the faeries took her and yeah of course she would be to old to be Tessa but I think that Adele is Tessa's mother, Mortmain has more involvement in this than we know I'm sure...
She is definitely part faerie and part shadowhunter and it doesnt explain why she can change, we know the Blackthorns at least Helen was part shadowhunter and part fairy and as far as we know she is not a shape shifter.
Hyacinth tells Tessa that she looks just like her mother and being that my theory is that she is Aloysius grandaughter's daughter, I think he recognizes that resemblance of Tessa with Adele.

  5. With Jessamine my OMG moment was to find out that they were married ... now THAT I wasn't expecting at all...

and one thing I forgot to mention was that is Magnus Magnificent of what? Ahhhh he always puts a smile on my face and he is there always to save the day :D

  6. * Jessamine is so naive. I was upset about her betrayal, but I also think that she really just wants out so badly and is convinced that Nate loves her. It doesn't make it right, that's just how I think Jessamine feels.

    * It's obvious that Tessa's mother is somehow associated with the downworlders if Hyacinth knew her. I think that Ursula's speculation makes a lot of sense.

*Oh the balcony!!! The further into this book, the more I am torn between Will and Jem, but I have to point out that While Tessa and Jem were getting a bit steamy, she kept thinking of Will and comparing, and with Will, Jem didn't enter her thoughts at all. I do love them both and I know that Clockwork Princess is going to break me no matter what. There is no end between them that won't make me cry.

  7. I have noticed that as well Amy, that when she is kissing Jem, Will creeps into her mind, yet when she was entangled and kissing him on the balcony, Jem was not a even a hint of a memory in the back of her mind…
I think she loves both boys, but I don’t think she feels the passion for Jem that she feels for Will…

    1. I don't know...there was that moment on the balcony when she had to tell Will not to be so careful with her, and I couldn't help but wonder if maybe deep in her subconscious she was remembering her night with Jem, and how he seemed to treat her with less care. I don't think it's a lack of passion because she obviously feels passionate about both boys, but a lack of true love. Who does Tessa keep coming back to? Will. Who does Tessa keep thinking about? Will. Who is she in love with more? Will.

Will is who Tessa really loves, but Jem is the safer choice. She doesn't have to worry about whether or not Jem is going to be cruel with her or push her away. Whereas with Will, she has no idea what she means to him because he won't let her beyond that wall of his. If Will wants to keep Tessa, he better let that wall down, and soon.

    2. I agree Jasmine, I have no doubt that Tessa loves Jem but like you I think he loves Will more, if I had to put numbers to it I would say that Will has 3/4 of her heart and Jem 1/4

  8. ~I never thought Nate was in love with Jessamine; everything about the way he acts makes it clear that he can't stand her. She's just to... I don't want to say stupid, but that seems the only word that comes to mind. Jessamine could be a great shadowhunter if she would just put aside good looks and 'lady-like' fashions and things. Nate can't and wont offer her anything in the future; he's just too focused on himself to offer her any kind of love.
~I think Hyacinth was trying to tell Tessa that she is indeed different from others, even others of her own kind, but Tessa has to figure that out for herself. She won't learn anything if she's just told, "oh, you're a..." she has to learn.
~I was sad during this part. I just don't like how Will treats Tessa this way, and then goes back to the cold shoulder afterwards. If he wants to keep her from loving him, then he shouldn't do things like kiss her and be gentle with her. It isn't fair to Tessa, and it isn't fair to Jem either, who she's starting to have feelings for as well. So, yes, I think this was a mistake and I'm glad Magnus interrupted them.

    1. You have to remember that Will probably wouldn't have kissed her like that if he didn't drink that spiked lemonade. But I also think Will is coming to terms with his demons (HA! I made a pun), and trying to be who he really is instead of the act he constantly puts on. So he wants to admit how he feels about Tessa and is acting nicer to her once in a blue moon. He's just so scared and nervous to come out and say how he is feeling because of that curse he's under. I'm glad Magnus showed up too, simply because I was worried they would get caught by Nate if they kept at it. But I think at this point in the book, it's going to take spiked lemonade for Will to admit how he feels otherwise he's not going to say it.

  9. Why Jessamine, why! For some guy? He’s not worth it! He’s using you! Why must you be so desperate, why? I didn’t think she would do this to the Institute. If she wanted a mundane, she could have any mundane out there, but why Nate of all people? He didn’t apologize because he loves you Jessamine, he apologized so he could use you! I’m so disappointed with her and how desperate she must be to take Nate back. Because that’s all it is—desperation. I think maybe deep down Jessamine knows he doesn’t love her, but she’s so desperate to get away from the Shadowhunters she’s lied to herself that Nate does indeed love her like she wants him to love her. And they’re married! She married that guy! I just can’t believe she would do this. With any luck, Charlotte can talk some sense into her, maybe break the delusion Jessamine has put on herself. But that’s probably wishful thinking…

Fairies must tell the truth. So Tessa must not be a changeling, and somehow she is apparently immortal, neither aging nor dying once her youth reaches its peak. But then what is she? I’m still on the idea that made she’s a type of Clockwork automaton, like Will said in that last chapter. And I know both he and Tessa dismissed the idea because she remembers growing up and having a childhood but that can be easily explained away with fake memories implanted in her head or that she is in fact an Autobot. Let’s just face it, Tessa is actually Optimus Prime. Ok, maybe not Optimus Prime but some kind of organic mechanism like the Autobots? Face it, Tessa does kind of do that Transformers thing, turning into other people. It’s a long stretch but still plausible. Then there’s all this Hyacinth business to consider, so I did start forming a second theory, like Ursula.

I personally don’t think Tessa and Will would have kissed anytime soon without some sort of push to do it. Will wouldn’t have kissed her in his right mind, and Tessa wouldn’t have allowed it if she were not under the influence. Obviously, they wanted to kiss each other. The drink lowers inhibitions; it doesn’t create relationships out of thin air (I wonder if that’s what the pink drinks at the party do?). But both Tessa and Will are so caught up in their assumptions that they wouldn’t have given-in to their desires on their own. Until Will finally comes clean, I don’t see them kissing again. I’m grateful Magnus showed up, otherwise Tessa and Will could’ve been caught and chaos would’ve ensued. I don’t think it was a mistake that they kissed. If Tessa’s smart she’ll realize that Will really does love her and that’s why he kissed her, he just won’t admit it, and she can go from there. If not, then they’re both going to be confused about it for a while, and the affects of the lowering-inhibitions lemonade would be wasted.

  10. *Jessamine is sucha traitor. I can't believe they are in love. Nate is horrible. How could she turn her back on the people that have always been there for her and loved her? She is so hell bent on not being a Shadowhunter and not marrying a Shadowhunter she would fall in love with anybody that said the right words to her. Oh to see how this is all going to play out.
*More secrets and more speculations of what Tessa is. Will we ever know?? Faries cannot lie so there has to be truth in what was said but it needs to be more concrete than that. So many more questions have been raised than answered.
*OMG!!!! How lucky can one girl get to have two incredible make out scenes. Thank you Cassie for writing such amazing scenes for us to enjoy. It was lucky that Magnus is the one who interrupted and someone else. Magnus has such a way with words. It is sad that it took warlock powder for them to act on an attraction that has obviously been there for awhile. I don't think is was a mistake. I feel like Will was able to show the gentleness and care he really does have inside him and in a way show Tessa that he does love her. Maybe Magnus is the one who laced the drinks to make Will show his feelings for her. Magnus cares for Will and wants to help him out and this could be way he thought was best.

  11. Jessamine is so many things but I never thought she'd do something like that. I mean it's Jessamine, sure she have no interest whatsoever in being a Shadowhunter but I really thoughtb she wouldn't do anything that would mean betraying them. That was totally unexpected and un-Jessamine-like (or at least I thought).

I have a pretty good guess that Tessa isn't an ordinary Downworlder. I'm sure she's very special and not just because of what she can do. It definitely complicates things but I think Hyacinth knows more about Tessa than she lets on. Maybe Hyacinth even knows how Tessa came to be and everything about her ability.
Definitely another one of the many mysteries I would really love to solve, hehe.

Oh sheesh, I'd say it's an "about time" kiss! I could've kicked Magnus though.. just a second too early, sheesh Magnus get a life, haha.
Anyway, that was a hot scene. I don't know about these two, but they can't keep on denying what they feel! Ugh, it's so frustrating. It's very obvious that they care for each other but why oh why can't they just admit it? Okay I know, it is complicated.. While the other one is running away from it [Will], the other gets pushed away and then gets confused about her feelings [Tessa].
I don't think it was a mistake though. But the spiked lemonade surely gave them some kinda push I guess. Magnus pretty much sums it up - they wouldn't have done it otherwise without the drink 'cause well they have a lot of inhibitions and they are both very stubborn.

  12. I was shocked. I don't understand that why she did this. I think Nate use her.
I was excited. Can't wait to know more about that what Tessa is. That fairy know the answers for this question. I think we will meet with this fairy in CP2.
That was a perfect scene. Will and Tessa are a perfect couple. I think It wasn't a mistake. They deserve each other.

  13. What crazy pronouncements. I was shocked to learn Jess and Nate were married. I'm still not so sure of her betrayal. She's not a stupid girl.

I could see Tessa's mother perhaps being a changeling. I had not thought of Adele being one. Never crossed my mind.

I completely missed the connection with the blue demon! WOW! And the kiss? No way was that a mistake. It wasn't something they hadn't both wanted. And it was fantastic! Will in love and unguarded is amazing. I hope we don't have to watch them- or Tessa backpedal and deny their true feelings. This scene was momentous.

Oh yes, Tessa is a lucky girl to have two such wonderful men falling to their knees.
