Today's discussion is about: Chapter 18
  • AN ENGAGEMENT!!!! *sigh* Okay as happy as I am for Jem and Tessa, my heart is breaking for Will.... do you think he's too late? Did you see Jem's proposal coming? I thought it was, but I didn't think it would be this soon. I love what he said about the strength of love. Do you think their love could cure Jem?
  • I loved the scene with Charlotte and Henry. I can't believe the two of them felt similar in they didn't feel the other one really loved the other. Where you surprised to find out that they both felt that way?
  • Do you think Sophie will forgive Tessa for warning her about the Lightwoods? Do you fault Tessa for saying what she does to Sophie?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. Oh, how I wish that Tessa and Jem's love could cure him!!! I was not surprised by Jem's proposal, but when I first read it I was shocked by the timing. But when Jem explained himself, it made perfect sense. I do think he wanted to marry Tessa anyway, but he moved ahead with his plans because of the impending doom at the Institute.

I was surprised that both felt the same way....talke about being at crossed-purposes with each other! I cringe when characters waste precious time like that, but better that they reconcile later rather than not at all!!! I think Henry has the potential to be a bad @ss now that he doesn't feel the need to prove himself worthy of Charlotte. ;P

Although Tessa had good intentions for looking out for Sophie, she really should filter her thoughts a little better. Sophie has lived through dire circumstances, and I don't think that Tessa should have expressed her concerns for Sophie like she did. But at least Tessa saw her mistake, and I just hope that she can rectify it before Sophie's resentment turns into something ugly!

  2. Half of my heart broke for Will, while the other half rejoiced with joy! I did not see that coming, but i can see that jem has little time left so his trying to make it count. If only love could cure jem, but i dont think it can't. i believe their is still how for another cure. It breaks my heart to say this, but i think it is too late for Will. Will loves jem and he cannot cause him pain.

I kind of laughed and cried with happiness when i read about Charlotte and Henry. Their misunderstanding caused them from being together, but now that both though the same thing they are going to be closer. Hey!

I think Sophie will forgive Tessa but in time. Tessa should rethink what she said, and maybe explain herself. Tessa is only looking out for her friend.

  3. I did not see that coming at all. I understand he loves her, but I still think Tessa and Will belong together. I am really curious about what is going to happen when Will finds out. I do think that love can cure least I really hope it can.

I loved this scene. It was so raw and real and just shows how much they truly love one another. I laughed a bit that they both misunderstood their feelings for one another.

I was really upset with Tessa for saying this. She can tell that Gideon is different from his family and I think she should have been more tactful in her warning. I do hope that Sophie will forgive her, but I think it is going to need a lot of explanation and time.

  4. The first time I read the book I really didn't see Jem's proposal coming and as happy as I am for Jem, I am also heartbroken for Will and can't help but think that Tessa made the wrong decision, because I'm not sure that she is really in love with him.
She loves Jem, there is no doubt of that, I just don't think that she is in love with him. When Jem suggests she may love him too, she thinks 'she had given him every reason to believe she loved him.' but she never actually admits to herself or to him that she does.
She also thinks 'She has never imagined she had the power to make someone else so happy.' I just can't help but feel Tessa does not feel the same way for Jem.

I loved the scene with Charlotte and Henry, I was always rooting for them as a couple, they are very sweet together. Really hope Sophie can forgive Tessa. Tessa was slightly out of line with her comments but it came from a good place. She obviously cares a lot for Sophie.

  5. ~As much as I loved the proposal, I was shocked that I felt sorry for Will. He was doing all that running around trying to find the demon who "cursed" him, and once he finally finds out that it isn't real, Jem's already proposed to Tessa. I don't think there's any hope for him though, because what is Tessa going to do? Go to Jem and say she can't marry him because she's in love with Will as well? That would break anyone's heart, and Jem is already dying; that would be a low blow for her to give. What Jem said, I think that both Tessa and Will give him strength; it could be possible for him to survive with those he loves, because they both love him greatly.
~When you read Clockwork Angel, you can see that Charlotte has feelings for Henry, because of how she acts, saying that she shouldn't force her love on him, that she should wait for him to come to her on his own. I had first thought only Charlotte had any feelings for her spouse, but after reading the previous chapter where Henry saves her (AW) I figured he had his own feelings, and I'm glad they finally both admitted to it. Which also makes me curious, because I'd like to know how Charlotte's maiden name comes back into the picture with Jocelyn and Clary.
~I think Sophie will forgive Tessa. I don't fault her, because, after all, Sophie did the same thing to Tessa with Will, though that warning came with the fact that Sophie knew Will, while Tessa has no idea what Gideon is like.

  6. Honesty, the engagement broke my heart. I love Jem and he's wonderful to Tessa, but she belongs with Will. But then again, if she loves Jem enough she can make the rest if his life happier. Can love be his cure? I don't think so.

I loved the scene with Charlotte and Henry. I was surprised to know they felt the same way. To me it was obvious Henry adored Lottie. Both focus so much on their takes though, they miss so much of what isn't said.

Tessa, Tessa. She is looking out for Sophie but she has no business judging other people. Look at how she's misread so much about Will. Sophie looks up to Tessa so of course she'll forgive her.

  7. *I did not see a proposal coming. I know Jem loves Tessa but under the circumstances I didn't think he would go that. I don't think that Tessa is in love with Jem the way she is with Will. She can't even be around Will without thinking of their kiss and the way it made her feel. Tessa is a people pleaser and in the end she is gonna hurt everyone involved. I seriously worry about Will's reaction. He is going to be so hurt. Aww poor Will...I'll take care of him tho! lol. I don't think love can cure Jem but I think it can prolong his life a little bit.

*Charlotte and Henry are so adorable. The each have so much going on in their own worlds that they can't see the truth. I love that they were able to discuss it and find out the truth about all that has happened between them. I think that know they will be stronger together as a couple and the heads of the Institute.

*Tessa's heart was in the right place but at the same time she needs to think before she speaks. Sophie cares for Tessa and I am sure she will see that she was trying to do the right thing and forgive her in the end.

  8. Tessa is not in love with Jem. She wants to love him, she thinks she should love him, but she doesn’t actually love him. Her reaction to the proposal was so underwhelming. Her thoughts about it and about Jem don’t sound like the thoughts of a woman hopelessly in love. If it had been Will—if Will had proposed, I think the situation would have played out very differently. Tessa would have felt happy. With Jem, she’s awed that she could make him happy. She did not comment on how she felt about it. Tessa wants to protect Jem, to keep him safe, and be there for him but she’s not in love with him. It’s so sad to watch. She’s forcing herself into a relationship she’s not ready to be in. There are different forms of love and I think Tessa does love Jem in a way, but it’s not true love. It’s not Clary and Jace love. It’s more like Simon and Clary, real and strong but not true. And I can’t help but wonder if Jem is doing this for all the wrong reasons himself. It worries me. Poor Will…I can’t imagine what he will do now? And love is strong. Love could cure the most deadly wounds—physical and mental—but it does not have to be returned to work. Simply loving someone, with all your heart, can make you better in so many ways. I don’t think it is wise to rush into an engagement like this…especially since I doubt Tessa’s feelings for Jem are as real as she wants them to be.

It seemed to me like Charlotte believed Henry didn’t love her but I didn’t think Henry was under a similar impression. I just thought he was unperceptive of his wife’s needs. But it makes sense now, knowing how he feels that he would be so hands free of the Institute. He was just giving Charlotte what she always wanted, to run the Institute. And as a result, Charlotte thought he had no interest in her or her activities. I’m glad they worked things out though. But is Henry’s middle name really Jocelyn? That’s an odd name for a boy. I wonder who Jocelyn was in Henry’s family. Also, I’ve thought it was strange that these two have been married for so long and not have any children to show for it. I can’t help but wonder if that’s Charlotte’s news, unless I have forgotten something that happened since Nate’s attack.

I hope Sophie does forgive Tessa. An apology from Tessa would go a long way, especially if she’s deeply honest about her concerns for Sophie and humble. Perhaps if Sophie would tell Tessa about what she knows of Gideon that would help. I don’t blame Tessa for what she said, I’m not entirely sold on Gideon yet either, but I understand why Sophie would get so upset about it. Hopefully, those two will have a talk and become stronger friends for it.

    1. Jasmine I 100% agree with you... my best friend says its because I'm in love with Will but I think it's because I see the facts in this...

I can only imagine if it had been Will and not Jem proposing, you think that Tessa would have been second guessing, drawing conclusions in her brain, etc etc? Not a chance! She would have jumped at Will's neck with a big fat yes in 2 seconds (had the circumstances not been what they were with this I mean Will having been so nasty to her in the past)...

I think Tessa has love for Jem, but is not "in love" with him, she is irrevocably in love with Will.

  9. The engagement surely was one of the things I didn't see coming. And honestly while I was reading this part, I was chanting No, No, No to Tessa in my head. I admit that I'm a Will&Tessa fan but honestly? I don't think Tessa loves Jem the way she does Will. She does have feelings for Jem but it doesn't run as deep as the love she has for Will.
Poor William.. *sigh* what's he gonna do now?

I want more Henry and Charlotte moments. I think this scene between them is really sweet and an eye-opener to them and to the readers. I hope we see more of how their relationship deepens.

I hope the two of them would work it out sooner. They're just starting to become really close and it would be sad to see their friendship go to waste.
Tessa and Sophie doesn't see the Lightwoods in the same light. Tessa said what she said because this is what she sees and truly believes in. I hope they'd have a talk and figure things out. There are a lot of things Sophie knows that Tessa doesn't especially when it concerns Gideon.

  10. How did I miss this post. I swear I commented on it yesterday lol!!

    * I wanted to cry when Jem proposed. I did see it coming, and it makes me happy, but also sad. I almost wish Will hadn't been held up and he could have spoken to Tessa and told her how he felt first. Then at least she would have known and maybe would have changed her decision. Not that I don't love Jem, but I really am just so torn between them and I know she loves Will. I really don't think she loves Jem. I think she cares about him a lot and wants to love him, but what she feels for Will is strong and she can't get past it. Even she says that she hopes that the part of her that is hanging onto Will will go away. I think if she knew about the curse and how Will feels (before Jem had asked)it would change everything. I don't want either of them hurt.

    * I don't think I was surprised that Charlotte and Henry both felt the same. I was very happy that they finally got it out though.

    * I think that Sophie will forgive Tessa. I think Tessa was right to be concerned, but I think the way she said it was not thought through very well. Sophie and Tessa do care about each other though, so I am sure they will work it out.

  11. I can honestly say that the proposal was completely unexpected (the first time I read the book), I have to confess that even though I have a soft spot for Jem in my heart I was screaming inside "No Tessa!!!!! dont accept the proposal, Will is coming!!" lol... it broke my heart for Will, because no matter what Will's plans for telling Tessa the truth this could only complicate things... I was happy for Jem though because it seemed like he was truly truly happy, his talk about love was just heart warming, he is such a pure and kind soul :)

Charlotte and Henry bring me to tears every single time I read that passage, it's just so touching that they love each other so much and the way Cassie wrote this part you almost feel what they are feeling, the real hurt in their words when they talk about the other not loving them and the elation when realizing that their love is not unrequited... this is one of the most romantic scenes in the series, I love it!

Sophie will forgive Tessa no doubt, she was just upset at that moment, it'd be silly to never forgive someone for something to petty...

  12. I did see this but I thought it will be in CP2. I'm happy because Tessa and Jem are happy too. I think there is hope for Will. I don't think their love could cure Jem. The love is strong and I know that but I think this time it's not enough. But I hope he will be ok.
I love Charlotte and Henry's scene. This is a good explame to why we have to communicate with each other. They are so lovely. And I love their reactions for Will.
I don't fault Tessa. They are good friends so they will be ok.
