Clockwork Prince Read Along Day #20: Chapter 19

Only 8 more days till Clockwork Princess is out!

Welcome to Day 20 of the Clockwork Prince Read Along. You can follow the entire read-a-long and find each of the day's posts here. Remember there's no right or wrong way to participate. Your comments can be as long or a short as you'd like them to be. You can answer 1 or each of the questions asked, it's totally up to you, BUT, in order to be entered into the CP giveaway (which you also had to sign up to win), you do need to be actively participating in the read-a-long.

Today's discussion is about: Chapter 19
  • Why do you think Mortmain wants Tessa? Could there be more about her that we don't know? Do you think he wants to use her as some sort of weapon against the Shadowhunters?
  • I knew it! I knew there were Demon Pox! I couldn't help but laugh at Will's reaction of Demon Pox. Do you think their plan on blackmailing Benedict is going to work?
  • I loved seeing Will so giddy and more carefree than we've seen him before. If you were Tessa, who would you choose? Jem, Will or would you decide on not choosing either?
  • I loved that Sophie and Tessa talked, and resolved the issue from last chapter. Do you think Sophie will have a chance at a real relationship?
Please DO NOT POST SPOILERS. There's some fans who are joining the read-a-long who are reading Clockwork Prince for the first time.

  1. I have no idea why Mortmain wants Tessa, but we do know that he hates Shadwohunters and feels wronged by them. So I guess that she is meant to be used to destroy them. But I still wonder about his manipulation of Will....what is Will, exactly, or what is his role in all this?

I hope their plan for blackmailing Benedict works. I just love his name...so appropriate!

I would choose Jem over Will, which is what Tessa has done....

I think Sophie is great and I want her to have a real relationship. :D

I'm totally enjoying the Read-a-Long. Thanks for hosting!

  2. I think so yes. Tessa is very special and maybe Mortmain played a role in making Tessa that way. I think Tessa has some potential that she doesn't know about that Mortmain does.
Who knows though what goes inside the evil, cunning mind of Mortmain?

    Yeay, for demon pox!
Maybe so, maybe not. Benedict is also a strategist - I think that's something every Shadowhunter should have. But blackmail is a heavy weight that very few doesn't give in to. I hope their plans would work though.

I'd very much choose Will (if I'm me). But if I'm Tessa? Maybe I'd be really torn between the two and end up not choosing anyone. If it means I'd be the reason for their pain, maybe it would be better if I'll just keep my real feelings to myself. Emotion is very hard thing to deny and contain though.

I think Sophie deserves to be happy just like everyone else. She has a good heart (though we rarely see it) and I just know she'd find someone who would look at her and not see the scarred face but who she really is inside. Sophie is a fighter and that's one thing every man should admire.

  3. * I think Mortmain wants Tessa because she is different. He obviously knows something about her that no one else does and maybe he wants to use her as a tool.

    * Haha!! The Demon Pox had me laughing. I think that Will is right to want to blackmail Benedict. I think that's the only logical option at this point.

    * OMG this is the hardest love triangle ever!! I don't know what I would do if I were Tessa. I know that she cares for Jem and she doesn't want to hurt him either, but I really think her feelings for Will are stronger. She only pushed him away because she thought he didn't care for her, but she obviously wasn't able to get rid of her feelings for him. He really does dominate her thoughts in a way that I don't think Jem could, but I just love both of them so much.

    * I really hope that Sophie is able to find happiness, and I truly believe that Gideon cares for her and doesn't care that she is not a Shadowhunter.

  4. I think that Mortmain has plans for Tessa and her abilities. I think that he wants to use her to further his career and to gain more power. Plus it doesn't hurt that it will upset the Shadowhunters.

I loved Will's exclamation and his singing and dancing around. I'm glad that he seems to be over-coming the curse and finally letting his true personality show through.

I think Tessa is stuck now. She's engaged to Jem, but still in love with Will. I don't see how she is not going to hurt them both.

I'm definitely team Sophie and Gideon. Forget about Tessa's mess and lets focus on these two. Are not they just the cutest couple! I do hope that things work out for them.

  5. There has to be much more we don't know about Tessa. Mortmain's got a plan, you know he does. I don't buy that he had a hand in creating her. I could be so wrong about that. I have no idea what his manipulation of Will means though. Hmm.

What a hilarious and disturbing scene. I think everyone thought Will had finally gone mad. I loved this side of him. So unexpected. I had actually forgotten about the demon pox. The blackmail plan was brilliant. Brill Will. Lol.
    * I have to admit I couldn't stop reading so I know how this plays out.

I love Will to the end. He immediately stole my heart in CA. Tessa loves him more. She just does. At this point I think she wants to make Jem happy given his short time left. No matter what she does someone will be hurt. I almost want her to stay with Jem so he has some happiness at his end. Me? I wouldn't have given up on Will in the first place. Not my nature to give up so easily where love is concerned. My heart rules me.

I love Sophie. If she gave up her loyalty to station she and Tessa could be the best of friends. Lord knows that could both benefit from that. She absolutely deserves love and happiness. I really don't know if Gideon is for real yet. He seems sincere, but we know the Lightwood's are tricky.

  6. Who knows why Mortmain wants with Tessa…he was planning to marry her so really who knows what he would do with that. She’s definitely useful, as the Shadowhunters have come to understand. Mortmain could use her for any number of things, and since he seems determined to bring down the Shadowhunters it makes sense that he would use her against them. He did originally want her to turn into his father, John Shade. So he could still try to do that. What that could lead to, no one knows. And with Jem and Will so enamored with Tessa, it would be hard for the Nephilim to kill her should Mortmain get his hands on her at last. She would be every useful indeed.

The blackmail plan better work or I will be furious. I think it would be more satisfying if Gideon went to the Clave about it, but there is the worry of Benedict’s supporters rallying up to take his spot. I think that’s going to happen anyway but if Benedict does step down it might discourage the others for at least a little while. I got to say though that I was surprised that what Mortmain had on Benedict was just demon pox. Here I was, thinking Benedict was being baited with promises of power or the return of his wife when in actuality he was being lured with the medicine for demon pox. And finding out what really happened to Mrs. Lightwood makes far more sense than what Benedict said to his sons. Very tragic too, and makes Benedict that much more unlikable. I don’t see how either of his sons, especially Gabriel, could stand him when they find out.

Because I’m me, I would probably choose neither boy. I would think I didn’t deserve either of their affections. But I think Tessa should pick Will. That’s where her heart is and that’s where she will be happiest. Will affects her in such a strong way that Jem cannot compare. Tessa loves Will, unconditionally and irrevocably. Jem just can’t compete with that, no one can. So I’m afraid, in the end, that Tessa will break Jem’s heart (Sorry Sophie). I just hope it doesn’t kill him. Maybe, if we’re lucky, Jem will truly fall in love with someone else before Tessa must break off their engagement. At least that way, he won’t be too disappointed. I don’t want Jem to get hurt, and fall off the deep end. He’s just so lovely, he deserves a happy ending. But it won’t be with Tessa.

So happy for the girl bonding, I can’t even explain. I was afraid this would turn into some sort of cat fight, but I’m glad Tessa humbly apologized as she did. Sophie couldn’t stay mad at her forever. And I can say now that I’m more comfortable with Gideon. I’m officially on his team. He is genuine and honest without, from what I can see, some sort of second agenda. If it turns out he’s as two faced as his father I will be so angry! But I hope things work out for him and Sophie. She could always Ascend, right? She’s a great candidate for it, so why not let her become a Shadowhunter? With any luck, once this Benedict thing is over, Gideon and Sophie can go public with their relationship, maybe even get Clave approval or pre-approval for Ascending. Who knows? I wish them the best of luck.

  7. ~I think, besides wanting to destroy the Nephilim, Mortmain feels he has ownership over Tessa--he claims to have made her, though he won't say how. I feel that he looks at her and thinks of her a some sort of property to be owned and control. There's definitely something we don't know about Tessa; who she is, WHAT she is. I would love to know why she's the way she is. Someone had said that a marriage ceremony, if done correctly, would give Mortmain total control over Tessa--I think he does want to use her to destroy the Nephilim.
~I'm pretty sure their plan will work. I doubt Benedict wants the Clave to know that he's been consorting with demons. Will's reaction was priceless. I even sang the song, where I usually just skim over them.
~I would choose Jem. He's a sweetheart, and I love violins.
~I hope that Sophie has a chance at a real relationship--she's been through enough to have a happy ending.

  8. I think there is more to Tessa than we know of. Mortmain must want her so he can use her against the shadowhunter s. nothing good

I laughed so hard, i almost dropped the book! will is so right and funny!

I love them both so much! I don't know what i would do if i was Tessa. it is so hard. There is more to Will than meet s the eye. he can be sweet, gentle, and daring. Jem is true to his name he is the perfect gentleman. he plays the violen, and will quotes. they make my heart beat.

I hope Sophie finds true love!

  9. *I have no clue why Mortain wants Tessa but if it is to use her against the Shadowhunters that is going to be insane. She could never hurt the people that have taken care of her. There are so many other questions of why Mortain has done certain things especially Will's family. So many questions to still be answered.

*Will Oh My Will!!! Why did everyone ever doubt that he was right. Demon pox does exist. This was such a great thing for everyone to see that Will is fun and actually is very smart, maybe too smart for his own good. I loved his reaction so much I literally laughed out loud instead of just in my head. I really do hope that they can blackmail Benedict. It is about time that Benedict gets what he deserves. I do feel bad for Gideon and Gabriel having to learn why their mother killed herself.

*Me personally I would choose Will but I am not torn between the two. I have always loved Will, even from the beginning. But for Tessa I almost think she should choose neither. Either way someone gets hurt and in the end that will hurt her. She loves Jem but her feelings for Will are stronger and more passionate. Going through with the wedding no matter how much Will acts like it is no big deal will hurt him and on the other hand if she walks away from the weddign she is going to kill Jem. To many emotions and feelings are involved and all will be hurt.

*Oh I so hope Sophie can have a real relationship. This poor girl has been so much she deserves to find happiness and to be loved. I really really hope that Sophie gets a happily ever after.

  10. I don't no why he wants Tessa but I'm very curious. He hates the Shadowhunters so I think he wants to use her against the Shadowhunters. He wants more power and wants to destroy.
Oh my god, Will! Haha! That was hilarious. Will was true. Well, maybe Will is right and the ducks are really bloody thirsty beasts.
Ok this is the hardest question. I don't want to be Tessa. I can't choose. I love both of the boys.
I really hope that Sophie will have a chance.
