Blog Tour: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

Welcome to the next stop on Penguin Books's Global Blog Tour for Rick Yancey's The 5th Wave.  For today's stop I was asked what I would pack if I was in Cassie's shoes. First, let me tell you a little bit about the book:

The Passage meets Ender’s Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up

What Would You Pack In Your Backpack?

If you were like Cassie, one of the last people left on earth, and had to leave your home, but could only take what's on your back, what would you take? Keep in mind that everything has to fit in your bag, at least for the most part. You can't fill your bag up with just books, though that would be tempting. Or clothes or stuff like that. Your back pack has to it everything you'll need for survival. Sure, you'd try to fit a book or two, and a change of clothes or two, and if you're a girl you'll frantically try and fit all the girl hygiene items you can in your pack, and then some. After I was asked to list the items I would pack if I was in Cassie's shoes, I started scanning my house and thinking of things I would back.

If I was Cassie, what would I pack?

First I had to figure out the size of my backpack. My first thought was I need a large backpack. I want to fit as much as I could in there, but then reality set in and I realized how stupid that would be. I'd be stuck carrying it, and I don't want to 1) have too large of a pack, and 2) bring useless things that wouldn't really help me in my survival or once out on my own I'd wonder why I brought it. I don't want to slowed down by a sore back or not be able to run if I have to, and having a large pack would slow me down. So, I made a list similar to Cassie's.

Here are some of the items Cassie packed in her pack, that I would pack in mine:
  • Protection/hunting weapons (a gun, ammo and a knife)
  • First aid kit/ cleaning items (travel size)
  • Water
  • Some minimal clothes (underwear, socks, gloves)
  • A flashlight w/ extra batteries
  • Hygiene items (Cassie and I would get along great. Neither of us would go out not being clean).
  • Food
  • Matches (I'm grabbing my water proof ones)
  • A baggie full of keepsakes like pictures, and other sentimental things of my family
  • A paperback or two
  • Gum / Candy
  • a Tent
  • Journal (spiral notebooks)
Here's what I'd pack and the REI back pack I'd like to think I'd use (no I do not currently own a back pack like this:

  • All the items Cassie listed above
  • I'm nixing the flashlight with batteries. Batteries take up room, and can be heavy, so I'm doing a hand crank flashlight
  • Glow sticks, you know the kind you can crack and they light up. This will provide light when needed, and also cheap entertainment. It's not like there's going to be a lot to do at night.
  • Meds- Ibuprofen is a must
  • Burn gel, because you never know
  • With the water, I'm bringing some water purify drops
  • Sunblock, I know that sounds lame, but I'm bringing it along with a hat
  • An extra pair of shoes
  • Knowing me, I'd bring my cell phone even though the battery would die and I'd have no way to charge it. Like Cassie, it's my cell phone and I'm bringing it
  • Solar blanket
  • A poncho, you never know what the weather might be like
  • MRE kits (while the granola bars and beef jerky might work for some, I'm slipping in a box or two of my MRE food. It might not taste all that great, but it will do the job).
  • A pocket size calendar. I'd go crazy not being able to mark off the dates. I know, weird, but true.
  • A lip gloss. Judge me all you want, but I can't stand not having soft lips. I am totally going out with soft lips, and not dry cracked ones. (Because that will matter when I'm dead).
  • I'm throwing in a travel size sewing kit, tweezers, and a mirror. You never know when these things will come in handy.
  • A compass
  • Extra hair rubber bands. What? I'm not going to be in survival mode with no rubber bands for my hair. That's a must have.
What would you pack? Would you change anything out in either of these lists? What would be your one MUST have item in your pack?

With today's stop I'm thrilled to share with you the 3rd part of the tour's audio extract. At the end of the tour fans will be able to listen to the full extract on Penguin's soundcloud.

TMI Movie News: News from Martin Moszkowicz

Yesterday morning I posted that Martin Moszkowicz announced that City of Ashes is in deed being made into a MOVIE, and since his announcement The Wrap has also posted about it here. They reported that:

Producers Constantin Film and Unique Features must be confident in their “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” due Aug. 23. They have just signed the two stars, Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, in the sequel: “The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes.”
The films are based on a successful series of young-adult books, five of which are in print with another set to hit shelves next March. More than 16 million copies of the series have been sold worldwide.
******
ScreenGems and parent company Sony will distribute the first film, which Constantin Film, Sony and Unique Features produced. Constantin and Unique Features will produce the sequel as well, which Mister Smith, which announced the sequel, will begin to sell at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
*****
Harald Zwart, who directed “The Karate Kid” and the first film in the series, will direct the second. Jessica Postigo Paquette, who wrote the first, also scripted the second. Principal photography will begin in the fall.
After making the exciting announcement of the CoA movie being made on  Twitter & Facebook yesterday, Martin also tweeted this exciting report from Variety:

TMI Movie News: News from Harald Zwart

TMI Movie director, Harald Zwart shared a picture with fans yesterday of himself at Abbey Road in London, recording the Mortal Instruments: City of Bones score, that I previously shared here. The score is being composed by Atli Orvarsson. I can't wait to hear it!
