World War III has left the world ravaged by nuclear radiation. A lucky few escaped to the Alaskan wilderness.
They′e survived for the last thirty years by living off the land, being one with nature, and hiding from whoever else might still be out there.
At least, this is what Juneau has been told her entire life.
When Juneau returns from a hunting trip to discover that everyone in her clan has vanished, she sets off to find them. Leaving the boundaries of their land for the very first time, she learns something horrifying: There never was a war. Cities were never destroyed. The world is intact.
Everything was a lie.
Now Juneau is adrift in a modern-day world she never knew existed. But while she′s trying to find a way to rescue her friends and family, someone else is looking for her. Someone who knows the extraordinary truth about the secrets of her past.
Juneau's Guide For Survival: 3-5 Things Juneau Recommends Doing/Having in Order to Survive all that happens in After The End

I’m writing this after-the-fact, looking back at that crazy period in my life where it seemed like EVERYTHING was falling apart. I didn’t have much time to sit around and think about what was happening while it was happening...kind of hard to have much reflection when you are being chased across America by two different factions (one of whom kidnapped your clan) for reasons you can’t even fathom.

But now that that story is over (and new ones have begun), I feel qualified to give you some recommendations for surviving what happened to me.

Situation 1: Everyone you know suddenly disappears
Survival Tip: FIND THEM

This one goes against the grain. You would think the answer would be “run, because you’re next.” That was true in my case: when the men in the helicopters figured out they had missed me, they came back to get me. I ran. I escaped. But as soon as I was out of immediate danger, I went after them.

My reasoning: if someone is out to get you and you run away, you could be running for the rest of your life. Instead, face your fears head-on. Then at least you know what your pursuers look like. And once you know who they are, you can find their weaknesses and come up with your own plan of attack.

Situation 2: You suddenly discover that everything you’ve ever been told was a lie.
Survival Tip: FIND THE TRUTH

Sure, it was a major shock (understatement!) finding out that there was never a World War III and that civilization had been going on, unhindered, for thirty years while my clan and I hid out in the wilderness.

I could have easily given up, curled up in a bitter unforgiving ball and ‘woe-is-me’ed my life away. I allowed myself to do that for a few days on the boat from Anchorage to Seattle. (A little bit of self-pity never hurt anyone—it helps fuel the flames of willpower.)

But by the time I hit land, I was ready to go. To figure out what was truth and what was lie. I will probably be continuing in that path for a long time to come. But, now that the foundations of what I believed about the world have all crumbled, I won’t give up until I figure out what I truly believe. Search for truth...what else is there? Okay...there’s love. But I have a feeling I might have already found that.

Situation 3: You suddenly find yourself in an alternate universe where nothing works like it did in your own world.
Survival Tip: LEARN THE NEW RULES...FAST!

When I arrived in Seattle, it was like I was in a spaceship touching down on an unknown planet. There were all of these things I didn’t know...didn’t even recognize: electricity, computers, cars, cell phones. Thanks to the EB, I knew these things existed. But try figuring out how to cross a major intersection when you don’t even know how fast cars go, how traffic lights work, that there are actually places marked on the street where you’re supposed to walk.

I must have looked like a newly-arrived alien being, peering in windows at all of the glowing screens, freaking out when I saw my first hissing, rumbling street cleaner, trying to figure out how money worked. But I didn’t (and don’t) give a flip about how I looked. I knew I had to learn the new rules...and fast.

I know things the modern world doesn’t know. So my knowledge mixed with their advanced technology puts me at an advantage. And that’s exactly what I needed in order to go up against my enemies.
