Murder, abductions, and forbidden romance abound in this thrilling sequel to Sara B. Larson's acclaimed YA debut, DEFY.

Alexa remains by the newly crowned King Damian’s side as his guard, ever committed to helping him rebuild Antion and reclaim the hope of Antion's people, despite continuing to harbor a secret love for him. However, when another threat to Damian and his kingdom emerges, and blame is cast on their newly forged allies from Blevon, Alexa knows things are not what they seem. With the fate of her nation hanging in the balance once again, will Alexa be able to protect her king and uncover the true enemy -- before it's too late?

About DEFY

A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and heart racing romance.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

Recent Shadowhunter FanArt

Hi Shadowhunters! Just catching up on some of Cassie's recent Shadowhunter fan art posts she's made recently via her Tumblr

So I was unable to post on the actual release day, but have a lil’ Jace to celebrate CoHF!
There are two special editions out there that I had the pleasure to contribute to. The special Target edition contains an exclusive comic! The comic is of a scene that isn’t in the regular edition. There is also the special UK/AUS edition that has a different comic from the Target edition. I personally think the UK comic is particularly emotional and sob-worthy so if you have the means to get that version, check it out.
To those who have read it already… Wasn’t it amazing?! (spoilery: Did you read that part? In the last chapter? The part that made me SMIRK TRIUMPHANTLY?)
Love this artwork, which Cassie's posted here

Posted here, Cassie had this to say:
Aw, sweet. And not v. Spoilery — makes more sense if you’ve read CoHf though.
"Jules, being parabatai is a big deal,” she said.”It’s… it’s forever.”
Awww!! Though I don't know much about this picture, I totally love it.

Bat Velasquez from The Mortal Instruments!
Note on my City of Heavenly Fire drawings:
I won’t be drawing scenes from the book or spoiler images for about a month. There are over 24k people following my tumblr and a lot of them are from the TMI fandom and I don’t want to post spoilers for anyone. I know that I can post things under a cut to hide it, but there are problems (such as the official tumblr app) that automatically shows what is underneath cut posts so that’s a little useless. And with people taking my art and reposting it all the time, spoiler tags are a little pointless as well.
Until then, I’ll post art of the non-spoiler variety.

We love Cassie's playlists she always shares with fans prior to her book's release. Just in case you missed it before, here's the City of Heavenly Fire playlist she shared last week.

cassandraclare:
"I’m Sorry I Love You" by the Magnetic Fields
A single rose in your garden dwells
Like any rose it’s not itself
It is my love in your garden grows
but let’s pretend it’s just a rose
Well I’m sorry that I love you
It’s a phase that I’m going through
There is nothing that I can do
and I’m sorry that I love you
Do not listen to my song
Don’t remember it, don’t sing along
Let’s pretend it’s a work of art
Let’s pretend it’s not my heart.
The rose will fade when summer’s gone
The song will fade and I’ll be gone
because my heart is dying too
and it’s all the same to you.
Ryan Star “Losing your Memory”
Call all your friends
And tell them you’re never coming back
Cause this is the end
Pretend that you want it
Don’t react The damage is done
The police are coming too slow now
I would have died
I would have loved you all my life.
Airborne Toxic Event, “Timeless”
Just help me through this moment
After everything I told you
How the weight of their loss is like the weight of the sun.
I see their faces near me,
I hear their voices calling,
It was like their lives were over before they begun.
"Us Ones In Between" by Sunset Rubdown
And I’ve heard of pious men
And I’ve heard of dirty fiends
But you don’t often hear
Of us ones in between…
And in the darkness I taught myself to hate.
But where were you, oh where were you?
And where the f*** did the sun go?
Ingrid Michaelson, “Breakable”
Have you ever thought about what protects our hearts?
Just a cage of rib bones and other various parts.
So it’s fairly simple to cut right through the mess,
And to stop the muscle that makes us confess.
And we are so fragile,
And our cracking bones make noise,
And we are just,
Breakable, breakable, breakable girls and boys.
"Epic Last Song" by Does It Offend You, Yeah
I called today but missed you again
Today’s the day I go up in flames
I sent the money to you, my dear
Today’s the day I burn away
I say baby, babe I’ve loved you a long time
"Samson" by Regina Spektor
You are my sweetest downfall
I loved you first, I loved you first
Beneath the stars came fallin’ on our heads
But they’re just old light, they’re just old light
"Control" by Garbage
The world might end,
The night might fall.
Rain on down and cover us all,
And drown us with the burdens of our sins.
Maybe I’ll look you in the eye,
Tell you, you don’t wanna die.
Maybe I’ll hold my breath and jump right in.
"Orange Sky" Alexei Murdoch
And I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my sister standing by
I said, “Sister, here is what I know now
In your love, my salvation lies.”
"Your Ex-Lover is Dead" by Stars
This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin
Tried to reach deep but you couldn’t get in
Now you’re outside me
You see all the beauty
Repent all your sin
"Daughter" by Youth
And if you’re in love, then you are the lucky one,
'Cause most of us are bitter over someone.
Setting fire to our insides for fun,
To distract our hearts from ever missing them.
But I’m forever missing him.
"Upward Over the Mountain" by Iron and Wine
Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me
Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body
So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds flying upwards over the mountain
Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison
Mother I lost it all in the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons can be birds taken broken up to the mountain.
Greg Laswell, “Goodbye”
Then lonely lay the day
I can’t remember you at all
And it’s not easy to say that day
Has already come and gone
And all that remains is a place
Where you no longer are
One day I won’t regret this
Oh how I want to believe that’s true
Once I pick up the parts I broke on you
I’ll get used to the idea
It’s not you.
"Sorrow," The National
Sorrow is my body on the waves
Sorrow is a girl inside my cage
I live in a city sorrow built
It’s in my honey, it’s in my milk.
It’s only half my heart alone,
On the water,
Cover me in rags and bones, sympathy.
'Cause I don't wanna get over you.
I don’t wanna get over you.
Bright Eyes, “A Perfect Sonnet”
We’re singing, I believe that lovers should be chained together
And thrown into a fire with their songs and letters
And left there to burn
Left there to burn in their arrogance
But as for me I’m coming to my final failure
I’ve killed myself with changes trying to make things better
But I ended up becoming something other than what I had planned to be
Now I believe that lovers should be draped in flowers
And laid entwined together on a bed of clover
And left there to sleep.
Left there to dream of their happiness.
Nick Cave “The Ship Song”
We talk about it all night long
We define our moral ground
But when I crawl into your arms
Everything, it comes tumbling down

Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around

Your face has fallen sad now
For you know the time is nigh
When I must remove your wings
And you, you must try to fly.

Cassandra Clare Answers Fan Questions

Just catching up on some of Cassie's recent posts over the past two weeks. Prior to before and right after CoHF was released, Cassie took some time to answer fan questions on Tumblr. Cassie's answers are highlight in orange.

Will you be writing another heart breaking love triangle anytime soon???
Yes.
(Okay, and to be fair that means “for some value of soon.” Someday, I will write a love triangle again. I can’t say in which book series or when. But it will definitely be completely different than anything I’ve done before, so I’m excited about it.)

Parabatai (again!)
Somewhat (very lightly) spoilery for CoHF — don’t click if you hate spoilers.
Okay, first question. We see a lot of what the actual, physical effects of the Parabati bond can be in this book….

Would you ever write about what Tessa did during the 130 years between TID and TMI? I mean, besides from TLH of course. SHe's just one of my favorite characters in existence so I'm just curious as to what she was up to all those years
I might, but I think it would be hard to do the Tessa Chronicles before TLH was finished, without spoiling what happens in TLH. She is a major character, and of course the (somewhat cataclysmic) events have to do with her children and their best friends. It’s something that would shape the rest of her life.
I did really enjoy the Bane Chronicles (as did Sarah and Maureen) and discussions are ongoing about a similar project, but not centering on Tessa. :)

Hi Cassandra, I was just wondering if you know or have decided on how many books there are going to be in your Dark Artifices series? Thanks!
Three. Lady Midnight, Lord of Shadows, and Queen of Air and Darkness.
I think this is literally all you could ever want to know about The Dark Artifices. http://tmisource.com/the-dark-artifices/more-on-the-dark-artifices/
Keep in mind that since The Dark Artifices is a work in progress, details will change but likely nothing huge!
How are some of the TDA characters affected by the events of COHF? One could imagine how traumatizing it was for some of them (Emma, Jules, Mark, etc).
SPOILER TAG JUST IN CASE
I don’t think it’s spoilery to say that of course the events of TDA were traumatic for the Blackthorn and Emma (because we all knew that was going to happen, it’s part of Emma’s character description) and that a lot of TDA is going to show how they work through that trauma. After all, their lives are irrevocably changed by what happened to them — every single one of them, in different ways. And if you read the “leaf note” at the back of the book then you know something really major about at least one of them.
The next question IS SPOILERY FOR COHF. So it is under a read more cut.
