The Summer People by Rebekah L. Purdy / Book Review

By: Rebekah L. Purdy
Published by: Entangled Teen
Released on: September 22nd, 2015
Series: The Winter People #2
Add it Goodreads
Source: Book from publisher to review, in exchange for my honest review

The sequel to the chilling Winter People returns to the world of Faerie, and is a romantic and enchanting follow-up.

Salome left humankind behind to be with her boyfriend, Gareth, in the Kingdom of Summer. But now forces of darkness are rising. Her happily-ever-after is coming apart, and the Kingdom is on the brink of war.

Newly-single Kadie Byers is on her way home for Thanksgiving, imagining a visit filled with hot chocolate, a hot guy for a little rebound action, and some girl time with her bestie, Salome. Except she receives a message from Salome with two important words: PLEASE HURRY.

When Kadie rushes to help Salome, she’s ripped from the human world and pulled into the kingdoms of Faerie, where she's shocked to learn that Salome's monsters are real, and that she's now at the mercy of one extremely vengeful Winter Queen...

Now both Salome and Kadie must find a way to survive the deadly chaos...or lose themselves to Winter's deadly, icy grasp.

Picking up right where The Winter People ends, Purdy wastes no time throwing readers right back into the Fae world. This is a much fast paced book, told from the points of view of both Salome and her best friend, Kadie. Readers get to see a lot more of the Fae world, a lot more action, and plenty of romance.

I didn't think I could love Gareth's character any more than I already did, but this book proved me wrong. I seriously love this guy. I love how he is with Salome. These two are seriously perfect for each other, and I love getting to see that. Salome herself is a character I feel has grown up a lot since The Winter People. Like Gareth, I love seeing how she is with him. Their love is definitely strong and evident in this story. I enjoyed seeing it continue to grow.

Salome is a strong, loyal character who stands for what she believes in, and will do anything to protect the person she loves. I loved seeing her growth continue in this story. There's so much more at stake for her now. She makes this incredible journey, and in the process learns a lot more about who she is, and what her abilities in the Fae world are. I loved getting to see and understand more of the Fae world, and it's history, through that. Salome also has to make some tough choices, and a heart wrenching sacrifice at the end.

There's a lot more characters in this story, and I liked getting to know them, and seeing what their roles are in the Fae world, and within this story. I'll admit, there's some seriously deranged characters in this book, and talk about crazy, Griselle will stop at nothing until she gets what she wants. She is evil and manipulative, and Kadie falls victim to that. Kadie this time around, is a far cry from the Kadie in the first book. I had a hard time with finding this Kadie believable. She's angry, and jealous of her best friend, which isn't the Kadie from book one, at all. She's a mean character, I felt nothing for her in this book.

Etienne is one of the new characters introduced, and though I admired him for trying to help Kadie, there's not much hope for her. In finding out how Etienne really is, my heart broke over his story, and all he's had to endure and do because of his love for his people. I love his role in the book. He's definitely not whom you think he is, and I'm anxious to see what happens with him in the next book.

There's a lot of character development in this story, and I enjoyed getting to meet other new characters like Darasch, and getting to see the history of him and Nevin. Through his story, we again see just how evil the Winter Queen, Griselle is. She has no remorse for ruining the people and relationships she does. Nevin is still a selfish guy, however, he still has the good of people at heart, and I liked see him grow into himself in this story. I liked how many of these characters are linked together. In coming together, they have strength, and hope in bringing Griselle's rein to an end.

I really enjoyed how fast packed, and action packed this story is. I loved the heartbreakingly beautiful romance. There's mystery, and plenty of deception within this world and storyline. With war on the horizon, not all the characters are easy to decipher as to which side they'll stay on, and some are easily persuaded into picking a side. There's betrayal, heartbreak, and a lot of sacrifices are made. I think there's a purpose for everything that happens in this book. We get a lot of questions answered from the first book, we are given a lot more history of the Fae world, and Salome and her Grandmother's tie to it, which I loved learning about. We also get to see a glimpse of where some of these characters are going.

Purdy has done a fabulous job with her sequel. There's a lot that's happened, and I have a feeling there's a lot more to come. For all my questions that got answered, I have more questions now in need of answers. Like the first book, my compliant with this book is the language. To me, it doesn't fit, at all. Normally when I wouldn't over look it, I did, though I bugged me to no end. Thankfully these's a lot this story has going for it, and I was hooked the entire time. Luckily I had both The Winter People and this book to read back to back. I devoured them both in one day. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. You can read my review for the first book in the series, The Winter People, here.
