Character Interview with Penny Berne by Rebecca Maizel
What is the weirdest thing about being struck by lightning/having amnesia?
That I don't remember why my friends are so angry with me. My best friend, May, isn't speaking to me. Wes, whom I've had a crush on and who I've known since I was a little kid gives me the silent treatment. I also have a slight limp from where the lightning went through my body. I just feel like I'm wearing someone else's life right now.
What memory would you never want to lose?
Being in Much Ado About Nothing with Wes & May. I was in the role of Beatrice and Wes was Benedick. I got to go to play practice every single day with my best friends. Now, they don't speak to me, but that's the last thing I remember. It was special.
What led to your love for theater?
I've always loved to act. I was an actor when I was a kid too. May and I were in lots of plays together, Annie, Little Women & more. I think it was that I could put on the costume, play a role, and disappear - at least for a little while.
If you could star in any play, what would it be/which character would you play? Why?
I would star in Our Town and play Emily Webb. I love this quote:
"Does anybody realize what life is while they're living it- every, every minute?”
That's the character of Emily Webb in Thorton Wilder's Our Town.
If you could go back and change what happened, would you?
I wish I hadn't been struck by lightning, but I don't have a choice. This is where I am now and what happened could happen to anyone. I want to make things right. Whatever I did to make my friends alienate me and ignore me was clearly my fault and no one is speaking up. I need to find out what I did and why I would hurt the people I love so much. I have to succeed.

A captivating contemporary novel about first love, second chances, and the power of memory, by the author of Between Us and the Moon, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Katie Cotugno.
One year ago, Penny Berne was the star of her high school’s theater department, surrounded by a group of misfits and falling in love with her best friend, Wes.
Now her old friends won’t talk to her, her first love, Wes, ignores her, and her best friend is the most popular girl in school. Penny is revered—and hated.
But when a near-fatal lightning strike leaves Penny with no memory of the past year, or how she went from drama nerd to queen bee, Penny realizes she may have the second chance she never expected.…

Great interview (always find character interviews fun and insightful... I mean it is from their perspective per se) and the story sounds like an interesting read, but real just the same. I really like her determination to succeed in making amends. Thanks for the share and the giveaway!
