AUTHOR GUEST POST: The Remnant Chronicles Covers

HI Mary! Welcome back to Mundie Moms! I'm so thrilled to have you on the blog today. Let's talk cover love. I LOVE the covers for each of the books in The Remnant Chronicles. I'm not going to ask you to pick a favorite (unless you secretly have one and want to tell me), because I have no idea how I could pick a favorite, since I love each of them for different reasons. What is one of your favorite features about each one of the covers?

Hi Katie! Thanks for having me back!  And I see you still have my favorite chair. *gets comfortable*  There are actually three things I love about all the covers. One, the title graphics! They are elegant, powerful, and just so darn beautiful. I gasped when I first saw them. Two, that with each cover, we get atmosphere and a sense of the world we’re in.  Setting is so important to these stories and it gets a rightful nod on the covers.  And three, there is a progression with the protagonist—she changes. You see her circumstances evolve and her attitude right along with it.  I will talk more about that below, but I think these covers accomplish so much and are beautiful art at the same time.  I have enormous awe and gratitude for the artists and designers. And the inside is beautiful too—so many design elements that show a lot of thought and expertise.

*One of my favorite features for the covers of The Remnant Chronicles, is how each cover not only fits each book's story, I also felt like the covers depict Lia's growth as a character. I love how fierce and strong she looks on the cover of The Beauty of Darkness. I've not read the book yet, but the cover to me hints at her character journey. Is that something you feel is a little bit accurate?

Yes! Very accurate.  On the first cover you can see her attitude, but also get a sense of caution in her stance, and of course she had every reason to be cautious.  In the second book, I like that her figure is smaller.  She is being swallowed up by this foreign, ominous world, but there is still a sense of urgency in her movement.  She is not just waiting for trouble to come.  And in the final book, we lose the lace dress and we see Lia armed and stepping into the fray.  She is no longer watching or running. She is a badass and ready to take on the world.

*As you were writing each book in the Remnant Chronicles, did you ever think about what that particular book's cover would look like, or do you try to not think about the cover during the writing process?

Yes, I always imagine and mostly try to think of “elements” that might be useful to include. Usually the art director asks my editor and me some months ahead of time, what images we think might be iconic to the story. I sent him a file of images that gave the “feel” for the story, but nothing definitive as far as objects.  The first piece of art I got from him was the title graphics only, which were simply stunning.  Those alone were on the arc, and that was enough for me.  But then he came up with the beautiful artwork. I loved it and once that was established as the first cover, for each book after, I envisioned variations of that.  When it came time for the last cover, the art director again asked what I envisioned and I sent him a really dreadful rough sketch of Lia armed for battle and facing the enemy, and somehow from that (he is brilliant) he came up with this astonishing final cover. It was more than I could have hoped for.
