NEMESIS by Brendan Reichs / Blog Tour: Author Interview & Giveaway #Nemesis

Welcome to the next stop in the NEMESIS blog tour, hosted by Penguin Teen. What better way to celebrate TODAY'S RELEASE of NEMESIS than by having the author himself on the blog, to talk about his new release. Before I share my interview with him, and just in case you haven't heard anything about NEMESIS (this book is so good. I'll be sharing my review for it later today), here's a little bit about the book. You can also read Brendan's interview with EW & find out more about book tour, here.

Orphan Black meets Lord of the Flies in this riveting new thriller from the co-author of the Virals series.

It’s been happening since Min was eight. Every two years, on her birthday, a strange man finds her and murders her in cold blood. But hours later, she wakes up in a clearing just outside her tiny Idaho hometown—alone, unhurt, and with all evidence of the horrifying crime erased.

Across the valley, Noah just wants to be like everyone else. But he’s not. Nightmares of murder and death plague him, though he does his best to hide the signs. But when the world around him begins to spiral toward panic and destruction, Noah discovers that people have been lying to him his whole life. Everything changes in an eye blink.

For the planet has a bigger problem. The Anvil, an enormous asteroid threatening all life on Earth, leaves little room for two troubled teens. Yet on her sixteenth birthday, as she cowers in her bedroom, hoping not to die for the fifth time, Min has had enough. She vows to discover what is happening in Fire Lake and uncovers a lifetime of lies: a vast conspiracy involving the sixty-four students of her sophomore class, one that may be even more sinister than the murders.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

* I love that Nemesis is being called Orphan Black meets Lord of the Flies. That is totally fitting. How would you describe your book in 3 words or less?
EVERYTHING is suspect.
* Do you have a favorite line or passage you can share with us from Nemesis? OR
I think I like these two lines the most:
The world might be about to end, but what did I care? My world ended all the time.
* What's something that surprised you about Min's character? I would imagine it sucks being killed every 2 years and waking up with no evidence of it ever happening.
I was surprised at how well she had managed to cope with the awful things that happened to her as a young child, even though it clearly scarred her personality and hampered her ability to deal with others. Min is a fighter. She has a good sense of when people are dishonest and trusts her instincts. She might be in an impossible position, but she’s not about to give up.
* How would you best describe Noah?
Noah is much more damaged by his experiences, though he works very hard to hide it. He’s spends most of his time giving off the appearance of being happy and normal even though he’s really kind of a mess. Noah is less grounded than Min and is susceptible to losing control of his emotions. He desperately needs help, and Min might be the perfect person to provide it.
* Idaho's a create setting for this book. What made you want to set Nemesis in Idaho?
I wanted Fire Lake to be truly isolated—a place well away from prying eyes. A quaint vacation town in the northern Idaho mountains just had this amazing rustic charm to it while also amping up the creepy factor. I love all the things that can happen in a place far away from everywhere.
* Which of your characters would teen you, be friends with and why?
Tack. He’s the smart-mouthed, sarcastic jackass I was at that age.
Actually, would I be friends with him? Hmmm.
* If had the chance to go back and tell teen you, one piece of advice, what would that be?
CALM DOWN. There’s plenty of time. Pace yourself.
* Mentioning Lord of the Flies brought back memories of being forced to read this book in high school. At the time I hated being forced to read the classics, though looking back, I'm glad I was. As a teen, were you a big reader? If so, what were your favorite books to read?
I was a huge reader as a teen. To start with, The Lord of the Rings was everything to me, especially in junior high. I ended up reading a lot of epic fantasy as a result, then sort of transitioned into science and tech thrillers by great authors like Crichton and Preston & Child. I think it’s that mix of story types that influence me today. I like fast-paced, edgy things that shock me. That’s what I try to write.
* To date, what book was your most challenging to write/draft, and which did you have the most fun writing?
Nemesis was the hardest I’ve ever written because it has so many moving parts, which is why I’m the most proud of it of all my books. I think the plot is the best I’ve ever put together, so I hope readers agree. I’m having the most fun writing its sequel, because, man, it’s getting nuts. I hope people come along for the ride because the second book is going to double down on everything. Strap in.
* Congrats on your upcoming book tour. What's one of your favorite perks to being on tour?
Hands down, the best thing about being on tour is working with the other great writers who’ve agreed to come out to bookstores and get weird with me. On the “Nemesis and Friends Tour” I get to hang out with RenĂ©e Ahdieh, Ryan Graudin, Danielle Paige, Veronica Roth, James Dashner, and Victoria Aveyard. And this is supposed to be work! But I also love school visits and interacting with real readers. To me, touring is a delight.
* What are a few of your most recent reads you'd recommend we pick up, along with Nemesis?
For middle grade, read Summerlost by Ally Condie. It’s the best of what writing for kids can be. For the young adult crowd, I’m reading Done Dirt Cheap by Sarah Lemon and it’s amazing. I fully recommend it!
