Sev is branded with the mark of a criminal—a star burned into her hand. That’s the penalty for being the daughter of the woman who betrayed their entire nation.

Now her mother’s body is displayed above Traitor’s Arch, kept in a paralyzed half sleep by the same plague that destroyed the rest of the world. And as further punishment, Sev is forced to do hard labor to prove that she’s more valuable alive than dead.

When the government blames Sev for a horrific bombing, she must escape the city or face the chopping block. Unimaginable dangers lurk outside the city walls, and Sev’s only hope of survival lies with the most unlikely person—Howl, the chairman’s son. Though he promises to lead her to safety, Howl has secrets, and Sev can’t help but wonder if he knows more about her past—and her mother’s crimes—than he lets on.

But in a hostile world, trust is a luxury. Even when Sev’s life and the lives of everyone she loves may hang in the balance.

A rich, thrilling debut full of unexpected twists and turns. This book kept me hooked right to the end, and even than I still wanted more of this story. This is a debut worth picking up!

LAST STAR BURNING is one of those book that from the moment I first started reading it, I literally got sucked into a story. This is the kind of book that grabs a hold of you from the get go, and doesn't let you know go until the very last word. With an enticing setting that is unlike anything I've read before, this story was not what I was excepting, and I'm blown away that it's a debut. This story is absolute perfection in how it was written, and how everything comes together to create one heck of an awesome story. It's YA story-telling perfection.

This book is nonstop action! With it's richly detailed world building, well crafted, diverse characters, and a story so memorizing you wish you had the next book in the series already in your hands, Last Star Burning is an unsuspecting surprise you'll wish didn't have to end. It was so easy to get swept up into this fast paced, thrilling read. I thoroughly enjoyed it's creative blend of YA Fantasy / Sci-Fi / Dystopian. Together these elements created a truly unique story, and gave it a feel all it's own, and one I've not come across in YA before. It worked perfectly.

At the heart of this story is Sev, a character whose story I couldn't help but want to know more about. I knew her story was a complicated one. It's one that is interwoven into a complex plot line, full of surprising twists and unsuspecting turns. Though she's branded a criminal because of her traitorous mother's actions, this girl is a symbol of strength, resilience and courage. She's a fighter on a quest for answers, and a redemption she doesn't need to claim. I greatly admire her determination, strength, and her ability to forge a new path for herself when there isn't anything but road blocks in her way.

To match Sev are some equally great characters who all play pivotal roles in her journey, whether for good or bad. There may be a certain character who I liked, a lot, because despite Sev being the society outcast, all he saw was his childhood friend... and maybe something more. There are some pretty resilient characters in Sev's story. Some of these characters are not who I thought they were, nor did they make the choices I thought they would.

Oh this book! All I can say is I need more answers. I for once couldn't predict what was to happen next. I loved it. Last Star Burning is only the beginning of what I imagine will be an unforgettable series with plenty of more unsuspecting surprises. I can not wait to get my hands on the next book. I highly recommend picking up this book. It's a must read, and one you'll see on my top ten list at the end of this year. Not to mention, I absolutely LOVE this cover, which is a perfect fit for this book.

FAVORITE BOOK QUOTES

"There's hope in fairy tales and stories like these. Sleeping Beauty always woke up."

"Sometimes memories tell us a story that fits what we think we know rather than the truth."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Caitlin Sangster grew up in the back woods of California and would rather go hiking, running, swimming, or general outdoorsing than just about anything else. If there aren’t any mountains, it doesn’t count as a real place. At eighteen, she moved to XinJiang, and at twenty-one it was Taiwan. She did eventually buckle down and graduate from Brigham Young University with a BA in Asian Studies and is now that person you avoid at parties because she'll probably start talking about Shang dynasty oracle bones.

Caitlin has been writing since middle school. She always thought of it as a silly sort of compulsive habit until she realized that people like reading stories and she liked writing them and there wasn’t much silly about that.

She currently lives in Utah with her husband and four children.
