Zeus would rather be anywhere than here—Buffalo Falls—the tiny town his family moved to at the end of the school year. Having left all his friends back in Chicago and with nothing to look forward to except helping out at his mother’s cafĂ© and biking around town with his weird little brother, Zeus is pretty sure this is destined to be the worst summer of his life.

But then he meets Rose—funny, beautiful, smart, and an incredible musician.

Zeus can hardly believe that someone like her exists, let alone seems interested in being with him. However, while Zeus is counting down the minutes until he can see her next, Rose is counting down the days until she finds out whether she will be able to leave their small town to pursue her dreams. As the afternoons spent going on local adventures pass into nights discussing their deepest hopes, Zeus knows that he doesn’t have long to convince Rose that what they have is more than a summer fling…if only he’s brave enough to seize the chance.

This book was a pleasant surprise. I'm not a huge contemporary reader, but there was something enduring about this story, and it's characters, I really liked.  I really liked the diverse characters and the role their heritages played into their stories.

For Jesus Bjorn Gunderson, known as Zeus, being uprooted to the small town of Buffalo Falls is less than ideal. There's not much for teens to do. The only thing going for him here is working for free, minus the tips he makes at his mom's cafe. He's got his little brother Grub, who's obsessed with anything that has to do with the army. Despite their huge age difference, they have a pretty good relationship. Not much else is going for Zeus, until he meets Rose. She is a piano prodigy who plays at the local nursing home.

The nursing home was an interesting element to this story. A good part of the book is set there. I loved getting to know the senior citizens. I loved that the teen characters in this book really got to know the senior citizens through their volunteering there, and the roles the citizens there played in their lives. My favorite is the relationship Grub formed with an elderly gentleman who was a solider, and how Alzheimer's.

Thankfully the senior citizens, and Zeus were strong enough characters that kept this story going, and interesting. Towards the second half of the book the plot fizzles out. Not to mention I felt like Rose was just thrown into the story for the purpose to spark an interest, but not much else really comes from her character. I would have loved to see a stronger presence from her character, and would have loved to gotten to know her more. I really liked the prospect of her Zeus.

Overall this was a good contemporary read. It gave me the sense of being stuck in small town America along side Zeus. Wanting to get out, but not knowing just how that would happen. Hope for Zeus comes in the form of the possibility of a relationship, but reality has a funny way of complicating things. The letter at the end of the story was the perfect ending to Zeus's story, and that of he and Rose. That will make sense when you read the book. This book is definitely a sweet summer romance, perfect for reading all year around.
