DANCE OF THIEVES by Mary E. Pearson / Blog Tour: Author Interview #DanceOfThieves

Welcome to the next stop in the DANCE OF THIEVES blog tour hosted by Fierce Reads. I am so thrilled to partner up with Fierce Reads to celebrate today's release of Mary E. Pearson's newest book! Go pick it up today! This is one of my most anticipated 2018 reads and it lived up to all my expectations! My review will be in the next post. Today's blog tour stop features a question I asked Mary about her book.

What element did you have the must fun creating when it comes to the mythologies in the Remnant Universe?

The thing that I loved about creating the histories was finding ways the kingdome histories said the same thing, but were different too. That was the point. That every history might have its own grain of truth, but it is colored by viewpoint too. Which history is completely true? Maybe they all need to be read to get some kind of true picture of what really happened. Just in my lifetime, I’ve seen how history has been revised and rewritten many times as new voices and discoveries weigh in on the whole picture.

I wrote the novella, Morrighan, as a way to give yet another glimpse of what really happened in the Remnant world. It told the story of the girl Morrighan who had a whole kingdom named for her, and a whole mythology to go along with it too. It was so satisfying for me to write from her perspective about what really went down—telling the true story about the girl instead of the myth—and it didn’t jive with the kingdom’s official history.

Another part of the histories that I loved creating was the mystery surrounding what really happened to this world so long ago. We know that “stars” fell from the sky, destroying the world as the Ancients knew it, but were they all really “stars” that fell? Or was something else going on? Readers get more hints about that in Dance of Thieves, but the people who inhabit the Remnant world may never fully know, just as we will likely never know every detail and truth of history—unless we can build a time machine—and I’m all for that.

When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger.
At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mary E. Pearson is the NYT bestselling and award-winning author of eleven YA novels and one novella. Her works include the completed trilogy, The Remnant Chronicles, which in a starred review, Publisher’s Weekly called “masterfully crafted.” Her favorite activities as a child were climbing tall trees imagining she was a hero in some fantastical world, or running along fence tops and roofs pretending she was a spy with a bagful of amazing gadgets. She was rarely herself. Amazingly, she never broke a bone until she caught a basketball in gym class. Catching real balls was not her forte. These days she continues to live in make-believe worlds she creates in her books. Her latest 2-book series, Dance of Thieves, allows her do all kinds of dangerous things without breaking any bones. So far.
