Q. Hi Cassie!! So its been said that at Shadowhunter weddings both participants are given away by someone close to them. I was just wondering who did this for wessa at their wedding? And jessa if this was there at their wedding. Thank you!!!! — my-chemical-kay
Cassie: Yes, it’s been fun creating the Shadowhunter wedding customs — as we find out in TSFA, Shadowhunters brides aren’t given away by their fathers, but instead both bride and groom are accompanied by a suggenes, someone they are close to in their lives that they select. Could be a parent, could be a parabatai if they’re close — I’m sure Jace and Alec would select each other. We’ll find out in TLH who Tessa and Will picked, and also there’s a flashback to Jem asking Will all the way back in the time of Clockwork Princess. Jem and Tessa didn’t have a Shadowhunter wedding, so they didn’t observe that tradition. Magnus performed the wedding as I suspect he got ordained online from the Church of Snappy Dressing or something.

Q. I’ve been thinking about the ban on faerie armies due to the Faerie Queen’s alliance with Sebastian. Does that ban extend to all of the fae all over the world or just to the NYC court? If I recall correctly, only the NYC court took part in the war against the Nephilim so how does the Clave justify banning all fae from having weapons? Are the fae in East Asia or Africa or India also affected? Also, are the fae really a mix of angels and demons mating or are they a result of the Earth’s own magic? Also, will the new series have the fae admit that they shouldn’t have tried to wipe out the Nephilim? I love your series btw, I like how all the supernatural species can be ultimately tied back to either angelic or demonic origin. — areynard
Cassie: The Cold Peace extends to faeries the world over. The Seelie Queen wasn’t just queen of the New York court. Faerie is a land with borders that blur our ordinary sense of space and time. There’s an entrance to the Seelie Court in New York, and also an entrance in Idris, as we saw in CoHF. There are other ways in as well. How does the Clave justify banning all fey from carrying weapons? They don’t feel they need to justify themselves. They make the law, they are the law. Some faeries betrayed them, and faeries all over the world are being punished for it. Sed Lex, Dura Lex. This type of unilateral punishment is not new, nor is it unique to fantasy books. Think of the Treaty of Versailles.
To quote an earlier post on the subject:
“…Magnus calls it a Carthaginian Peace, but that’s because the Shadowhunters are more likely to be familiar with the peace of Carthage than they are with the end of World War One, at which time they were pretty detached from the mundane world. They do know their classics, though. And as you can see from the Wikipedia page on the Carthaginian Peace, the Treaty of Versailles is included.”
Q. Also, are the fae really a mix of angels and demons mating or are they a result of the Earth’s own magic?
Cassie: From another earlier post:
“The fey are not literally the offspring of a demon and an angel. The whole notion of faeries being “half angel and half demon” is not the same as warlocks being half demon. The legend is that faeries were originally created from the union of angels and demons. But every faerie that is alive today (as far as we know) was born the child of other faeries. We don’t actually know how the fey were initially created. All we have to work from is the legend. So faeries don’t have “demon blood” or “angel blood” in the way that warlocks have an actual directdemon parent or in the way that Jace and Clary have actual angel blood.”
Q. Also, will the new series have the fae admit that they shouldn’t have tried to wipe out the Nephilim?
Cassie: The fey are not a united front. Not even close. Some of them may regret their decision to fight alongside Sebastian. Some may not. Many never made that decision, but would probably side with him now because they are being punished for a crime they didn’t commit. Some faeries hate Shadowhunters. Others don’t, and are furious with the faeries who brought this punishment on all of them. The Cold Peace has definitely turned Downworlder public opinion against the Clave, but also vice versa. You’ll see how this highly charged situation plays out in TDA!

Q. I love your books and I’m so excited for the new tv show but I was wondering if Sebastian/Jonathan is going to be a part of the show? And if he is have you had any auditions for the role? — myrandomtearoom
Cassie: They are not looking for anyone to play Sebastian right now, and will not be this season.
Q. Hi Cassie, I’ve never heard of Lydia Branwell before and I read that they have cast her for the show. So, if you can, can you tell me who she is? Thank you! — camisala01
Cassie: Lydia Branwell is a character who was invented for the show. I didn’t know much about her beyond her involvement with Alec (Maryse wants to marry Alec to her), so I asked Ed, and he said Lydia was created because “we had to sort of bring Idris to the Institute! We need that larger story you have in the novels about the Accords and the role that the original families play in the history of the Shadowhunters, so we had to bring someone to the Institute to embody that.“ He also said she is an obstacle to Magnus and Alec’s romance about which they are enthusiastic. One of the other writers, Angel Dean Lopez, said the girl Alec was going to be involved with (Lydia) was “a lot like him in personality.” I know she says in her audition that she was in love with “John Blackthorn” (but don’t know if he ever shows up as a character.)
There’s a big story on The Wrap about the casting and the actress, Stephanie Bennett.
Q. What are your thoughts on Lydia Branwell …..? — reallytess
Cassie: After a lot of thought I’ve decided it’s not my place to give my thoughts about the TV show, or anything that is planned to happen on it, or anything I know about it, unless it’s very minor commentary like “Izzy looks pretty” or “they’re not casting Sebastian right now.” Adaptations are a minefield for any fandom. I’ve seen a lot of theorizing and guessing and opinioning (I know, that’s not a word) though nothing that matches up with my experience of the show or my reading of the scripts. I think right now there’s not much known beyond the cast photos and snippets of info, and that’s always a difficult place, but because my voice is such a loud one in the fandom — and because I am not in the fandom, but sort of outside it — I think standing back to let everyone make their own judgements and decisions is what I should do right now.
Q. I’m just stopping by again to say thank you for your patience with the fandom and for being you! I hope you’re staying hydrated, getting plenty of rest, and that your hands/wrists don’t hurt! Have a wonderful day! — oquinn53
Cassie: Thank you! You guys don’t require special patience, though, you’re great. HOWEVER I signed a ton of books in London, and then a huge bump swelled up on the back of my hand and it’s still there and it’s really gross. I might take a picture of it. :D
Q. Hi! Umm I was just wondering if Emma will be part of the series? I would like to audition for her when the time comes and I was also wondering where I would audition seeing as I don’t have an agent or anything — aylarrogers
Cassie: Hello! Actually I own the rights to the Dark Artifices. I’ve never sold them. So neither Emma nor any other character from TDA can be included in any show or movie. That doesn’t mean you could never be part of Shadowhunters, though! I don’t know much about acting — I know you should have an agent, though, that lots of shows/casting directors won’t look at actors who don’t have agents. Getting good representation should be free and should protect you against skeezy situations or being taken advantage of!
Q. I don’t know if this is your team or actually you, but I’d just like to thank you for responding! I’m such a huge fan of your work and hope to become a writer in the future! Honestly, you responding has made my night and I love your work so much! As a reader, I can tell how much you love your characters and the story lines literally pull me into a trance to the point where I can’t put the book down until I have finished the entire book! Again, thank you so much for responding and I can’t wait to read Lady Midnight! — dauntlesssdemigods

Q. hello Cassie!! i was wondering with the new covers of TMI/TID will there be an actual physical map of the Shadow World?? Thank you :) — iamnoturbitch
Cassie: That would be a very big map! The maps in the repackages are maps of “Tessa’s London” and “Clary’s New York” basically — they show detailed versions of each city with indicators on the map of where important things are (”Magnus’ loft) and illustrations of them.
Q. Hi Cassie, in this post (http://cassandraclare.tumblr.com/post/119021125674/cover-questions) you mentioned a special City of Bones edition with Jace’s POV, do you have any news regarding it? I can’t wait to read The Copper Gauntlet - the first chapter was so mean! Have a great day! Cat xo PS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR A LOVELY SIZZY DATE AND SUCH A SWEET KISS!! ♥ — catreadsbooks
Cassie: Sizzy kisses are fun! ;) Yes, there is a hardback special edition of the new City of Bones that will be sold only by Barnes and Noble. (They ship from the US, but outside the US, as far as I know, there will not be any copies of this.) It contains the beginning of City of Bones, when Jace and Clary first meet, rewritten from Jace’s perspective. It contains also the forwards I wrote for the repackages, which are in every edition, as are the maps. Like the rest of the repackages it will be available online and in stores on September 1. I’ll be in Australia, so I won’t be able to get one till I get home. :)
Just to clarify...
Sebastian was on the old CoG cover - Simon is on the new CoG cover.

Q. Hi cassie!I am a huge fan of your books. I just have 1 quick question. Will there be a jessa wedding (or any wedding) in lady of midnight (or any of the upcoming books)? — v-amaze
Cassie: There are definitely weddings. There is at least one significant wedding you’ll hear about as upcoming in Lady Midnight, and of course, weddings in the Last Hours. For someone who was confused by the planning of her own wedding (what are “seat back bows”?) I have certainly signed up to write a lot of them! Hint: you’ll hear in LM that at least one major couple from TMI is getting married.
